06.27.14 | Yeah pretty much the early-mid 1990s were a gold mine for great, reasonably loud produced albums |

06.27.14 | recent picks - the new Swans, PJ Harvey's Let England Shake, Fiona Apple's The Idler Wheel. those three all benefit from a wide dynamic range.
i seem to freak out about shitty mastering more than most people on this site. can't understand how a mastering engineer could be satisfied with a product when they're hearing clipping/digital distortion |
SAPoodle
06.27.14 | I still think 8 could have done with 'louder' production but it's still great. I actually love the production on 19, in many ways it makes the album for me |

06.30.14 | ^Dude, most of those are albums that contribute to the loudness war. Clutch's Earth Rocker hits -6 on the DR Database. I want albums that eschew the loudness war. Nice attempt, though. |
Wolfhorde
06.30.14 | Idgaf about some database, I go by what I can hear and I can't hear any obvious brickwalling in those. If you want to be anal about it - go ahead. |

Right? |
BeneaththeDarkOcean
07.01.14 | Well, regardless of how accurate it actually is, it's pretty obvious Earth Rocker clips like crazy with a good pair of headphones (just listened to it today). It's mastered by Brian Gardner, who's been a prime contributor to the loudness war for years and years now. So, basically, your opinion is invalid. ;)
As another example, SikTh's debut mentioned above is mastered by Vlado fucking Meller, which TVTropes accurately describes as "the Scrappy of audiophiles everywhere". I could keep going, but I think you get my point. |
Torontonian
07.01.14 | dude i think loudness war is gay as much as the next dude but i think you're going a little too far. |

"Idgaf about some database, I go by what I can hear and I can't hear any obvious brickwalling in those"
blast tyrant by clutch has clipping all over the shop, dont need no database to tell me that, the sikth record isnt too great either and obv boris is compressed to shit but its part of their charm n all. some of those recs are rly gd tho especially the morphine record which sounds amazing. DR isnt everything but its a good tool to know what to expect in terms of loudness, like seeing death magnetic has a DR rating of 3, you know its going to sound like absolute shite, whereas the black album has a rating of 11, theres many other factors obv but theres a reason so many of us losers respect the dr
