Weezer

Weezer is an American alternative rock band. They formed in 1992 in Los Angeles, California, and have gone through varying degrees of success over their 22-year career (from 1992 – 2014). Weezer is an American alternative rock band. They formed in 1992 in Los Angeles, California, and have gone through varying degrees of success over their 22-year career (from 1992 – 2014). They have released 9 studio records, and they have sold over 17 million records worldwide. They have long been cited as innovators and helped to popularize alternative rock in the nineties.

They released their eponymous first album, lovingly dubbed the “Blue Album,” to avoid confusion with their 2001 and 2008 self-titled releases. Thanks in large part to producer Ric Ocasek (of the Cars fame), and a series of innovative videos that received constant rotation on MTV, the Blue Album hailed 3 hit singles, “Undone – The Sweater Song”, “Buddy Holly”, and “Say it Ain't So.” It has gone on to sell over 3 million copies, and remains their most successful album. They quickly returned in 1996 with Pinkerton, which abandoned the power-pop sound of their first album, with darker tones and more personal lyrics. Its release was hindered by a lawsuit that prevented their label from advertising it properly, and as a result, it was a critical and commercial failure upon its release, being called “The Second Worst Album of 1996” by Rolling Stone. However, Pinkerton soon developed a cult following and critical acclaim, with many fans calling it their best work. They soon went on hiatus after the initial failure of Pinkerton and lost bassist Matt Sharp, who started to focus more on his side – project, The Rentals.

In 2001, they returned with their second self-titled record, (the Green Album). It was another major hit with its singles “Hash Pipe” and “Island in the Sun.” The next year, they released Maladroit, which saw the band experimenting a little more, with the result garnering mixed reactions. In 2005, Weezer released Make Believe, which also received mixed reviews. Lead single “Beverly Hills” was their first #1 Modern Rock single and also earned the band its first Grammy nomination. The next single, however, “Perfect Situation” has boasted the most success, with a stay at #1 for 4 weeks on the Modern Rock charts. In 2008, they released their third self-titled album, (the Red Album) which featured “Pork and Beans.” This was quickly followed by two more studio efforts that were extremely hit and miss, the poppy Raditude (which featured another hit single in “(If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To” and Hurley, which continued the bands progress in fully jumping the shark, by donning a full headshot of actor Jorge Garcia (who played the character Hurley on the TV show Lost) as its album artwork.

After another four year hiatus, the band released their ninth studio album Everything With Be Alright In The End, which has the band returning back to their original mid-90s sound, with many fans claiming that it is the best album that the band has released since the height of their critical popularity in the mid-nineties. « hide
