Welsh left in 2001 and was replaced by current bassist Scott Shriner. Over their 16-year career(from 1992 – 2008), they have had 6 studio-records, 3 of which have gone platinum, and they have sold 7 million recordsunder the DGC label. They have long been sited as innovators and popularizers of nerd rock along with bands like They MightBe Giants.Weezer formed back in 1992, and were signed to the Geffen label in early 1994. They released their eponymous firstalbum, though many refer to it as “The Blue Record”, to avoid confusion with their 2001 album of the same name. It hailed 3hit singles, “Undone – The Sweater Song”, “Buddy Holly”, and “Say it Ain't So”. It has gone on to sell over 3 million copiesand remains their most successful album. They returned in 1996 with their very personal and dark “Pinkerton”. Its release washindered by a lawsuit that prevented them from advertising it properly. It was also called “The Second Worse Album of 1996”by Rolling Stone, and was a critical and commercial failure. It soon developed a cult following and RollingStone revised it’sreview and changed it to a 5 out of 5 star-rating and was inducted into the hall of fame. Many fans call it their best work. They soon went on hiatus after the initial failure of “Pinkerton” and lost bassist Matt Sharp, who started to focus more on hisside – project, The Rentals. In 2001, they returned with their second self-titled record, The Green Album. It was anothermajor hit with its singles “Hash pipe” and “Island in the Sun”. “Photograph” was also a single, but was less successful and lessimportant to the album’s success. The next year, they released “Maladroit”, which experimented with a more fan-friendlyapproach. This failed however and it soon diminished in sales after going Gold. It featured many new elements of Weezer suchas heavy-metal riffs and extended guitar-solos.In 2005, Weezer released “Make Believe” which received mixed reviews. Itssingle “Beverly Hills” was their first #1 Modern Rock single and also the band it’s first Grammy nomination. It’s second single“We Are All On Drugs” was less successful, due to the fans negative reaction to MTV’s very cheesy “We Are All In Love” edit, which many saw as unnecessary and damaging to the single’s success. The next single, however, “Perfect Situation” hasboasted the most success, with a stay at #1 for 4 weeks on the Modern Rock charts. “This is Such a Pity” was also releasedas a single, but has not garnered much attention. Weezer has obtained a severely loyal fan base over the years, includingfans Mykel and Carli Allan, who were known for their service and support of the band. They are now on hiatus after River’smarriage and do plan on returning, despite the rumors of a break up that were spread by an out of context interview withMTV. « hide |
