One of the biggest genre-hoppers in popular music today, Beck has become a mainstay of alternative music over the last 10 years. Like Radiohead, his big break came thanks to one single from an otherwise relatively mediocre album. The release of "Loser" from "Mellow Gold" immediately created a wave of public interest in a product of the anti-folk movement. However his next major label release, "Odelay!" completely transformed public perception of him, with it now being seen as one of the most essential albums of the 1990s.
"Mutations" and "Midnite Vultures" both were limited critical and commercial successes, although 2002's "Sea Change" saw a dramatic turnaround in Beck's musical style, with an album composed entirely of acoustic ballads-utterly different from the eclecticism of "Odelay!". With the release of "Guero" earlier this year, Beck was widely seen as having gone back to the formula of "Odelay!", only without quite achieving the same level of critical acclaim. It remains unclear where he will go on the next step of his musical progression. « hide |
