The single biggest band of all time, The Beatles need no introduction. Over 30 years after their split, the 25th anniversary of John Lennon's death made global headlines this year, just months after Paul McCartney opened and closed London's Live 8 extravaganza. In other words, even though we're now a long way past the band's existence, their legacy is virtually incalcuable.
Starting with the early pop days of "Please Please Me" and "Help!", the band's sound matured throughout their career, with the major transition point arguably coming in 1966, when they released "Rubber Soul" and"Revolver". After the release of these albums they decided to stop playing live, but their creative output was not inhibited by this. Over 1967 and 1968, they released "Magical Mystery Tour", "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and "The White Album", all of which showed different facets to the band's approach to music.
By 1968 strains within the band had become evident, with "The White Album" effectively seeing the band members contribute their own songs, accounting for the sprawling nature of the album. Before their split in 1970 they released "Abbey Road" and "Let It Be". After their split there were rumours of a reunion, but these were destroyed by the murder of John Lennon in 1980, and later by the death of guitarist George Harrison. Still viewed as one of the greatest bands in musical history, The Beatles have had an influence on popular music and culture that few groups or individuals of any description can match.
