This is missing a little bit of the edge that their last album had, in my most humble of opinions. They ~almost~ recapture the absolute brilliance and magic of Frengers and Kites (masterpieces, both of them) but it's not quite all there. I'm surprised that, in hindsight, I end up wishing they had followed the direction they started to angle towards with Stories. Obviously this album is marvelous, and maybe it will grow on me more, but they've done better before, maybe three times. Let me end by saying that Mew is god damn phenomenal because that last sentence was too negative for the end of a rant about a band that is so indescribably special to me. |

I think this might be my favourite of all his albums, something I definitely didn't think I would say about a new record from Loscil. It's so haunting and layered and keeps the listener on their toes. Often ambient records settle in to pretty predictable grooves but this one is always shifting. |

Peppers was actually somehow a steaming pile of shit and you've got a pretty good idea of what this album sounds like. Avoid this unless someone you like enjoys it, then pretend to be a fan. I'm convinced that every single "fan" this douche has followed this line of reasoning. Or is in a cult. Or both. |

Laura Stevenson refines her skills as a lyricist (and also starts to branch out into more interesting, less cliche lyrical topics), The Cans display drastically improved songwriting and much more musical creativity - and the overall result is an absolutely breathtaking piece of indie-rock from one of the genre's rising stars. Did that 2011 hype-train get on your nerves? If so, start running now and don't look back: this one's gonna be off the chain. CHOO CHOOOOOOOO!!! All aboard!!! |

All three versions of this tune are equally massive (though my personal favourite is definitely Over My Head). V.I.V.E.K. has finally realized his dream in full, now having a record label of his own to go with his personalized sound system in North London. Big things are surely on the horizon for System Music, and its first official release is an absolute stunner. Absolutely essential listening for fans of dubstep. |

Man they were really onto something special with their last album, but this one just falls completely flat in comparison. On its own, it's a pretty enjoyable album for what it is, but I really thought that Phoenix had to potential to really move forward and create another undeniable masterpiece. This is certainly not that masterpiece. |

This band has the potential to be so great. They need to learn some quality control, maybe trim some of the fat, and their next LP could be something truly incredible. Certain moments on this album beg me to fall in love with it, but there are quite a few weak moments as well. They're almost there, but not quite. Mangan released this 5 song EP in March of 2009 as a warm-up to what would become his massively successful second LP, Nice, Nice, Very Nice. It contains three tracks which would later appear on the LP (Sold, The Indie Queens Are Waiting, and, of course, Robots) as well as Till I Fall, and Tragic Turn of Events/Move Pen Move, which is a very engaging, emotional, and unique song within Mangan's repertoire. This EP contains three of Mangan's strongest and most loved tracks, and two lesser known gems: a must-have for Dan Mangan fans. |

Never before has an artist or band that I liked had such a dramatic drop in quality over one album. I wanted to like this so badly but it's absolutely awful with nearly no redeeming qualities. The album is choked with eight-minute tracks that have no business being longer than four, and the guest spots are absolutely dreadful (especially on the third track which might be the worst thing I've heard all year). This is the biggest disappointment of 2012, easily. |

I haven't had access to the internet for the past few days, so I wasn't able to see people's ratings for this start pouring in but I knew that as soon as I logged in to sputnik that this would be really high on the "popular albums" list and would have a rating above 4. Lo and behold: sputnik does not disappoint. If we're being serious though you guys, I mean, come on, this is not that good at all. Lazy instrumentation and below-average production (only the drums sound decent) along with straight up boring songwriting make this The Mars Volta's worst album yet. Silly sputnik with their silly overhyping. |

A really cool album, but it's just not working its magic on me. Musically, the album is very impressive, and the production is close to perfect. For me though, a lot of it comes off as way too cheesy, especially in the vocal department. I enjoy listening to this, especially the first two tracks, but in the end, I'm just not in love with it. Maybe I need some LSD or something, but to me this album is just alright. |

The individual songs on this album are actually quite good, but Glover can't seem to decide if he wants to be a hard thug from the hood or the innocent nice guy. I'm surprised: this isn't terrible. Still not my thing at all at all but a lot of the tracks are actually really good. Would be a solid 3 if it didn't drag a bit (the album is a little long and feels bloated) and if Lil' Wayne didn't ruin the two tracks he's featured on. Much better than 'Thank Me Later' (which isn't saying much coming from me: I hated that album). |

To get to where I currently live, I have to walk down this street with two separate shops that play generic reggaeton at obnoxiously loud levels. Usually, this pisses me off as it momentarily stops me from enjoying what I have playing on my iPod. Today, it was a welcome distraction. The vast majority of this album sounds like a computer getting raped. And why, oh why does this need to be over an hour long? There's barely one iota of musical creativity to be found here and nearly every track abuses the same "readymade dance-party" beat. Shitty music for wannabe hipsters with terrible taste. |

One of the most interesting concepts that I have ever listened to. I want to give this a 4.5 just for the pure scope and magnitude of this project, but it definitely starts to drag near the end (which is to be expected from a 52 track album, but a bit more variety would have helped). Still, this is an essential piece of listening for any fan of emo music. |

Foo Fighters Wasting Light | 4.5 |
Foo Fighters have been a great band for well over a decade now, and Wasting Light is further proof of that. However, this is more than just another passable album to get lost in their evergrowing discography. Wasting Light is surely a standout. The album is focussed and mature, but it still rocks like The Foos of old. And on that note, let it be said that it rocks hard, easily harder than anything they've done since 2002's One By One. To use an example, consider "White Limo." Grohl's vocals are nearly screams throughout and the guitar riffs are simple and dirty, yet manage to drive the song along in an effective, catchy manner. "White Limo," and the entire album in general, is an homage to the early days of The Foo Fighters, but with a new, fresh-sounding approach. All things considered, this is quite possibly their best album yet. |

Just awful. This is the sound of Britney Spears trying to become relevant again, and failing miserably. She's trying to sound all dubstep-y, and from a financial standpoint, I can understand why she would choose that route (and by "she" I mean Britney Spears the franchise, not the person). She's trying to get in on a trend that's about to explode and be the next big thing, which is a smart move. Unfortunately for Britney though, the album is pure crap. +.5 for at least trying to do something different from her other albums. Also some of it is kind of catchy in a good way, like I Wanna Go. Most of it is catchy in the "dear GOD please stop raping my brain" sense though. (Drop Dead) Beautiful is honestly one of the worst songs I've ever heard. Just, read this lyric: "You must be b-i-g/Because, you got me hypnotized/Whoever said that beauty's on the inside is a liar/'Cause, what I'm looking at right now/Would make a big girl cry/So fasten up your seatbelt/It's gon' be a bumpy ride." That's so revoltingly bad, I want to puke. Oh I almost forgot, someone needs to tell her that "if I said you had a nice body, would you hold it against me?" was maybe funny at one time, but that was in the early 90s and not for very long. |

In a year full of highly anticipated releases (Radiohead, Thrice, Defeater etc.) it's funny that I actually found myself waiting for THIS to officially drop so I could hop on the hype train. Adam, my friend, your band legitimately rules, which is a relief, because I really didn't want to pretend it wasn't shitty just to spare your feelings. I feel weird saying this because getting a song sent to you via a mediafire link on fb chat makes it seem like the least legit thing ever, but Legendary Birds is one of the best hardcore songs I've heard in the past year. |

Black Mountain, and they'll shut right up. This is great rock music that I would recommend

is just so easy to enjoy.Plus, I mean there's a fucking shark on the

It's a good album. Much of the We All Inherit The Moon side is boring, but there are enough

dynamic and listenable. There are some pretty poor vocals that hinder their first track
however. I don't know, like I said, it's a good album. Both bands can do better though. |

I've never listened to Sufjan before, but I had gathered that he was an indie-folky-singer/songwriter kinda guy. So that's what I was expecting, more or less, when I put on The Age of Ads.rWhat I got what the Merriwheather Post Pavilion of the year. Only better. At over 70 minutes long, the album never tires or begs you to hit the 'skip track' button. It's so layered and full of such an array of electronic wizardry and "fuck-it-all" lyricism. The album is immense; it floored me. I feel like listening to older Sufjan stuff (such as the critically acclaimed Come On Feel The Illinoise!) would only result in bitter disappointment. The Age of Adz is a strong contender for album of the year. P.S. What's with that 3.8 average rating? Silly Sputnik, go listen to Enslaved or whatever you crazy kids are digging these days. |

Being one of the higher rated emo albums out there, and allegedly having a soothing blend of post-rock dynamics, I was hoping to really enjoy this album. And I did, sort of. I mean it was post-rock influenced emo, sure, but it all sounded recycled and derivate. Each song has approximately equal amounts of skramz-y sections and post-rock style breakdowns, resulting in very few standout moments. It's still a nice album, but not one I'll be putting on frequently while other, better emo exists. |

This EP is an excursion in soothing post-rock bordering on ambient at times. The guitar
passages are interesting and well-mixed, but they also go well with the several voice sample
scattered throughout. Tracks to try-out should include 1 a.m. Waterfront Station and
The Woods (What Scares You), an eerie track based around a vocal sample from the
movie "Antichrist"

"I Will Win, Cannot Lose, Came to Here, Bought New Shoes"rPunch While Rap is 11 tracks of slick beats and lyrical genius from a man simply rknown as Ill Mitch. Most of the time, he's laying down brilliant lyrics like in Hey Ladies Fans: "Hey ladies fans, can we fall in love? You fit with me me me like a boxing glove" Other times, he's ranting about how in his homeland (Russia.....) raising your middle finger is not offensive but using said fingers to create a fake mustache on one's upper lip (a la Stalin) is seen as incredibly rude (from Fast and Danger, maybe the album's best track).rNo matter what it is, this album delivers pure comedic, not-to-be-taken-too-seriously, hip-hop gold. Ill Mitch is, well, ill. |

John Lennon Unfinished Music No.1: Two Virgins | 1.5 |
It's kinda hard to rate this album. I mean, the only reason it got produced in the first place is because anything Lennon and Ono touched in the late 60's was gold. Right, so what does it sound like? A bunch of pretentious contemporary bullshit with occasional actual music. I want to give this a 1 but I think it's worth a bump because there are some good ideas here even if they're poorly executed. Plus, they recorded this during the first night they had sex with each other. So that's pretty cool I guess....even though it's still a bunch of nonsensical bullshit. |

This is nothing spectacular but it's definitely not bad. Pretty catchy but overall just
kinda boring. Still, it's probably worth at least a few listens and I could see myself still
enjoying this years later, if only mildly. The last half of the album (from Siberian Breaks
on) is actually pretty rulesauce for the most part.
Oh, and probably one of the worst album covers I've ever seen. |

Before hearing this album, Blackwater Park was my favourite Opeth record, but I think this tops it. Ghost Reveries is as immediately gripping in the crucial opening track as BWP is, but the huge well-executed variety of sounds on this album set it apart from other progressive metal masterpieces.
I can't describe metal very well, so I went with a sound-off and not a review. This might be a 5 with more listens. |

How can a band possibly hope to follow an album as hauntingly beautiful and mesmerizing as
their 2005 release What We Must? Quite frankly, anything other than a
"disappointment" would be a very pleasant surprise.
So, while One-Armed Bandit lacks some of the ingenious flow and spontaneity of their
masterpiece, the staggering musicianship and thoughtful song-crafting techniques found here
are still stunning. This is a gripping listen with constantly shifting dynamics. And while
it's true that this can certainly be a challenging listen at times, when that's the worst
you can say about it, you know you've found something exceptional; and that's what this
record, and this band, are. |

The String Quartet The String Quartet Tribute to Coldplay: Volume 2 | 2.5 |
First the good: songs that can be played well by a string quartet are chosen and the
melodies are played very nicely.
Now the bad: the covers are too faithful and don't take any liberties with the songs which
can be a bad thing for a cover album. Also, these compositions lack the drive that is
provided by the consistent percussion work of Will Champion on the originals.
Overall, this is still a nice listen as the songs are still good (after all, Coldplay wrote
all but one) but a lack of distinction from the originals (other than the obvious
distinction of an entirely different type of musical performance) and the emptiness left by
the absence of any sort of percussion prevent this album from going anywhere too exciting. |

A very good slice of early 90s Alternative Rock. I was surprised to not only find the album
not present in the database, but the band was not present either.
Anyway, Dear Dear is nothing shocking. It contains mostly straight-laced rock tunes which
have flairs of catchiness and sing-a-long accessibility. Despite the negative connotations
these qualities can entail, the album does not come across as shallow or monotonous but is
instead rather exciting at times and memorable at others. The album is also diverse to an
extent featuring off-beat, but still mainly rock centred, tracks such as Music Man
and Book
The lead track, the catchy She La, and the pleasingly off-putting Book are
highlights but there are several others that are not far behind. |

I don't get what Grind is and I don't know when to apply 'core' to the end of the genre I'm using to describe a band whose genre I'm not sure of. So I won't give this album a genre; but I will say that it's aggressiveness and accessibility (compared at least to other DEP albums like Calculating Infinity) combine to form a sound that is ass-kicking but engaging simultaneously. Despite what suffix I may need to technically add here, this may just be my favourite metal album of all time. |

I'm torn on this album. On the one hand, the dynamics are great, the guitar hooks are wicked cool, and the songs each progress in really interesting ways. On the other hand, the drum patterns get pretty stale by the end of the album, and the vocals irritate the shit out of me most of the time. For the moment, I'll settle on a low 3.5.

This is a joke, right? Right? I'm so embarrassed to be part of the generation that allowed garbage like this to be produced. Unlike other horrible, shitty music (Soulja Boy, Simple Plan etc.) I don't even understand the appeal of it: since when do fans of rap or hip-hop like screamo or hardcore or vice versa?
Al Gore lied, global warming isn't ruining the planet, it's these dreadful scene acts. Eww.

The production was too perfect. It sounds like they spent months cleaning away every last little bit of any personality from the record. Alexisonfire Old Crows / Young Cardinals | 3.5 |
Don't you hate when bands change musical direction for the wrong reasons? Well, this album is the perfect example of that. Following their two monstrously awesome albums, their opus Watch Out!, and their experimental, genre-bridging Crisis, Old Crows / Young Cardinals is somewhat of a disappointment. Apparently, they wanted to get as far away from the "screamo" label as they could, which is stupid for two reasons. One, they weren't ever screamo (and that term is thrown around too much anyway), and two, George's excellent scream was perhaps the best sounding of all the vocalists to be found in the post-hardcore genre. So they compromised, wrote more straightforward radio-ready tunes, and George adopted a weird gruff kind of yell in lieu of his legendary scream. It's still a great album with some really excellent tracks (most notably, The Northern and Young Cardinals), but Alexisonfire were never a great band, they were a phenomenal band. Hopefully, they can learn to be true to themselves for the next record and not naively try to avoid getting labeled. |

Regina Spektor Far | 4.5 |
Regina Spektor sure has come a long way from that quirky, crazy stuff that she used to do on her earlier records Songs and 11:11. While some hail her new record as a "safe pop record" I see it as a change in direction, and one done quite well. While it's true that this is her most produced and "normal" album to date, it also comes off as one of her best. Spektor has quite the knack for righting interesting, forward-thinking pop songs and this album is proof of that. There is not a bad song on here and that's why this album gets high marks. This is only a dissapointment if you've been waiting for Songs version 2 (or Soviet Kitsch version 2). |

Honestly, I was not expecting to like this album very much at all. Most other albums that I have listened to based off of praise from Sputnikmusic have been dissapointing. As The Roots Undo and Jane Doe, for example, are both surely great, even excellent albums, but based on the huge amounts of hyperbolic claim they receive, I was expecting jaw-dropping amazing-ness. Pair this with the fact that this site goes apeshit for anything vaguely post-hardcore (don't get me wrong, I love post-hardcore just probably not as much as the average user here), I was skeptical.
However, this album, to oversimplify, rocks. Hard. The musicianship on several of the tracks is nothing short of genious. All parts of the album mesh together so well and in the end, it all forms one coherent sound.
At times, I am annoyed by some of the cleaner vocals, on Pink Roses for example, but the fantastic tone set by the screams more than make up for the few vocal downfalls to be found here.
The interplay between the guitars and the drums is excellent and gives the album a certain "je ne sais quoi" (to get just a little bit pompous).
All in all, this album is put together so well and resonates with such a unique, solid sound, that it is hard to dislike. Probably, this is one of the most, if not the most, mature post-hardcore album that I've ever heard.
Thank you Sputnik for revealing to me this gem of an album. |

The Icelandic title of this album translates into English as "With a renewed buzz in our ears, we play endlessy" (close enough). Originally, this title put me off of the album. What I had always like about Sigur Ros ( ( ), Agaetis Bryjun, etc.) was their relaxed, laid back sound. So the idea of a "playfull" album did not appeal to me at all. However, upon giving this album several listens, I warmed up to the less laid-back sound of Sigur Ros. Surely not as good as previous endeavours, this album still delivers. While the tracks are shorter, the same tried and tested methods of Sigur Ros show themselves and ultimately make this an excellent album. The third track in particular (I won't attempt to spell it) is a great mix of the new and old Sigur Ros. This is a highly soothing and enjoyable listen. It seems to be more accessable than previous Sigur Ros efforts, which is both a positive and a negative. I see this album as somewhat of a new direction for the Icelandic post-rock idols, but overall, it's well done. I'll be interested to hear the studio follow-up. |

Kaiser Chiefs Yours Truly, Angry Mob | 2.0 |
You know an album is less than great if it takes you three sittings to get all the way through it. This album annoys quickly and get old even more quickly. While it has some redeeming qualities (The Angry Mob is a good song, however unoriginal), they aren't enough to make up for the lackluster tone of the album as well as the blatant unoriginality. I agree with the reviewer when he says that Kaiser Chiefs seem like they're trying to create rock-anthems and that just don't fly. Rock-anthems aren't created by humans; they are given to us by the rock gods in the form of Queen songs. Too many shortcuts on this album to make this anything more than a 2 for me. |

What We Must is in a three-way tie (the other two being Kid A and Lift Your Skinny Fists) for the most stunning, beautiful, and, frankly, the best album of our modern era of music. In many ways, this is the perfect post-rock album, mainly because it isn't strictly a post-rock album. There are elements of jazz in this music which help to separate it from a genre which has become a little bit monotonous and predictable (sometimes). rEvery instrument on this record is played with palpable emotion and true talent; one almost feels as if the musicians are in the room playing live. What's more is that this band, more than most others I have ever listened to, sounds like one cohesive unit when they play. Whether that's a result of the various members' tight relationship or fantastic production doesn't really matter; the result speaks for itself. rAlso, the songs are all beautifully crafted. The first song in particular, All I Know Is Tonight, is a masterpiece of song-writing with several beautiful themes and a quite remarkable build-up. The interwoven musical passages and breath-taking use of quiet/loud juxtaposition make this song in particular (and the record in general) a truly moving musical experience. rI love everything about this album. Each time I give it a spin, the music demands my full attention. Sometimes, I might read or think about stuff while I listen to music, but not with What We Must. It is such an emotional piece of music and its subtle complexities demand the listeners' full attention. |

This album beautifully epitomizes everything I dislike about popular music in today's society. This album is fantastic. Unlike earlier David Gilmour projects, On an Island showcases the sound of a man who has finally detached himself from his legacy (namely, Pink Floyd). This album is soothing and full of emotion from the beginning to the end. In classic Floyd style, most of the tracks seem to bleed into each other making for an uninterrupted listening experience. As expected, the album centres itself around Gilmour's guitar leads, and rightly so. This guitar work on this album can only be described as extraordinary and is yet another firm argument in favour of "David Gilmour is the greatest guitar player ever" (which I would totally argue for). I hear something new each time I listen to this album. No matter what mood I'm in, On an Island always hits the spot. Undoubtedly, this is one of the best albums of this decade, or at least the best guitar album of this decade. Highly, highly recommended. |

O My Heart, released in 2008, is the second release from the Vancouver based group Mother Mother. By combining indie-pop guitar hooks, excellent male/female vocal harmonization, and fun but sometimes evocative lyrics, O My Heart cements Mother Mother's unique sound. |

This album has to be a 5 for me. It was my very first "post-rock" experience and it hooked me on the genre as a whole. Both songs are absolutely incredible with BBF3 emerging as my favourite spoken word section (yes, beating even The Dead Flag Blues). Accessible, but unreachable, this is easily my favourite EP.

I think I owe some of my intense love of this album to the circumstances under which I went through my first phase of listening to it. My love for music was growing at a rapid pace: I was exiting the "classic-rock purist" period of my life. I was hanging around with my first real "indie-kid" friend (ladys and gentlemen, jash13) and he was blowing my mind with tonnes of music recs (My Bloody Valentine, Modest Mouse, Radiohead, GY!BE, Neutral Milk Hotel to name but a few of the many essentials I was missing at the time). I was in my "get-stoned-listen-to-complete-albums" phase (who am I kidding, like I've left that). And lastly, I had just gotten the most bitchin', high-tech, expensive, noise-cancellation headphones as a Christmas present. All of these combined to form the perfect atmosphere to lisen to Minus the Bear. This album blew (and continues to blow...haha) my mind. It's catchy and pop-y in some respects, but musically diverse and intriguing. As a guitar-player who was boxed into the pentatonic mode of riffing and soloing, this album did wonders for my playing. Each time I listen to this album, I'm taken away to a better place. One where music is the wine that fills the empty cup of silence.
I love this album. And while I'm sure I've overblown it quite a bit (like I said, it may be that the circumstances made the music for me), this is a fantastic album and worthy of a full listen from anybody who is a fan of music, or for that matter, anybody alive. |

Alexisonfire Crisis | 4.5 |
Alexisonfire Watch Out! | 5.0 |
This is Alexisonfire at their very best. On Watch Out, they hit a perfect balance between their more aggressive approach like on their self-titled debut and the more melodic and accessible sound like on later albums such as Crisis and 2009's Old Crows / Young Cardinals. This album, at least vocally, is what every good post-hardcore album should be. The interplay between George Petit's screams and Dallas Green's softer tones create a constant back and forth that sounds like a battle sometimes, but an agreement at other times. The drumming is superb, the guitars are distorted and played with attitude to fit the themes of the songs, and the bass playing, while a little lost in the mix (what else is new), is very good. Almost all of the songs on here are AOF classics. Listen to Accidents, Control, It Was Fear Of Myself That Made Me Odd [probably their greatest song to date], Hey It's Your Funeral Mama....(I've listed 4 of the first 5 tracks so far) screw this, just listen to all of it and tell me it isn't the most versatile and endearing post-hardcore record you've ever heardr |
