Little Brother The Minstrel Show
Mount Eerie A Crow Looked At Me
The songs read like pages torn out of Elverum's tear-stained diary; a fact that makes the project feel less like a well-orchestrated emotional appeal and more like the strewn-together product of one man's grief. A Crow Looked At Me's thematic emphasis on the realness of death and its tangible influence on one's life makes for one of the most compelling releases of 2017. The music is too sleepy and too fleeting to stack up against Phil's most impacting releases, but it's not designed to. Rather, it is a nuanced, subtle, intimate, and reflective album that exists solely as the expression of an artist coping with his loss.

Car Seat Headrest Teens of Denial
The only thing holding back the album is its 70 minute runtime and Will Toledo's frequent self-indulgencies. That being said, Teens of Denial is a phenomenal indie rock/emo release and if Car Seat Headrest could just reign in their songwriting a tad they could easily establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the modern indie scene. Obvious standout The Ballad of The Costa Concordia shows incredible promise for the group and alone makes Teens of Denial worth a shot.

Joey Badass ALL-AMERIKKKAN BADA$$
The followup to his heavily NY-inspired debut takes Joey's sound in a smoother, jazzier, more political direction. On first
listen, many of the beats are glossier, less varied, and less engaging than the beats on B4DA$$. AAB also suffers from
being yet another record living in the shadow of TPAB's bold, thoughtful commentary on race and politics in America.
Despite falling short of being the game-changer that Joey claimed it would be, All-Amerikkkan Badass has a few excellent
cuts (Rockabye, Legendary) that make it worth the listen.

But come on Joey, why do half the beats sound like You Ain't Gotta Lie?
Kanye West Late Registration
Kanye West The College Dropout
Kayo Dot Dowsing Anemone With Copper Tongue
Kayo Dot Hubardo

Toby Driver Madonnawhore
Madonnawhore is kinda like Kayo Dot's latest album; it's nice to throw on and get lost in for a while but it will never be as engaging or as challenging as some of Toby Driver's past work. Of course the album is not trying to be Choirs of the Eye, but fans of that Toby Driver may be underwhelmed by this project.

Kendrick Lamar DAMN.
Don't let disorienting, schizophrenic bangers like DNA and Element fool you; Kendrick Lamar's raw, scatterbrained, and stripped-back follow up to 2015's To Pimp a Butterfly is also his flimsiest and most underwhelming project in years. Tracks such as Love and God are easily some of the weakest in his discography and the album suffers significantly from their inclusion. That being said, the highlights (Fear, XXX, Duckworth) are more than good enough to make Damn. one of the better hip hop projects of the year. Despite my disappointment, Kendrick is still proving on this album that he is one of the most interesting and talented artists in music. Just don't get too caught up in his lyrical ramblings, which often prove themselves to be bipolar, contradictory, and strewn-together.

Gorillaz Humanz
There are two tracks worth listening to on Humanz: Saturnz Barz and Let Me Out. The former thrives off a surprisingly catchy feature from Popcaan while the latter is given life by some decent vocals from Damon Albarn and a pretty energetic performance from Pusha T. Other than that, the latest Gorillaz album is a barren wasteland of disappointing features, boring production, and loose ends. There is undoubtedly room for a group like Gorillaz in 2017; the success of goofy, eccentric hip hop artists such as Lil Yachty and Young Thug are a clear indication of that. But don't bullshit us Albarn, you can't just throw cartoon characters on the cover of a demo tape and expect us to buy it.
