Empyrium A Retrospective
One of folk-metals finest compilation albums and an extremely powerful effort by Empyrium. The songs here are graceful and melodious. The atmospheres focus on the common darkened-depressive moods that Empyrium are known for. The high attention to emotional detail shines through with blissful layerings, dynamic decibal shifts, musicianship that is focused on mood rather than audible display, and a group of musicians who are fueled by their desire to convey a sense of music that stands seperate from anything you've heard before. Ones could argue that the album may be boring from time to time but when properly analyzed, this latest offering fills plently of voids. If anything this album is a perfect example of how to create music that isn't boring while remaining in theme. I highly recommend this for everyone.

| Doom. There is a rather powerful display of energy here. It's controlled, reserved, and effective. Do not be turned away by the spacious clean guitars at the begining. Every notes seems to serve a purpose. This is doom that takes a while to build up but when you look at the whole picture, being the whole album, you'll realize how amazing this latest release by Corrupted really is. | Amazing ambient jazz/electro. Hidden Orchestra are quickly becoming one of my favorites bands in this era. The moods are spacey, zoney, encapsulating, and even mostly melancholic. The jazzy drums are sometimes reminiscent of Cinematic Orchestra's "Motion" and breathe great deals of traveling depths. Post-jazz rock pierces from time to time as well. Get this now hard. |

Atmospheric symphonic black metal amongst the finest, and within the genre, one of the best releases of 2011. The melodies are almost never stagnant. Haze filled riffs build and descend with synths. Various folk-like elements sprout up from time to time, all within context of the albums purose; a grand journey through a world that is filled with imaginative arts and colors. Truly a superb release worth checking by any lover of music and especially bm, folk, and classical fans.

To ambient or not to ambient, that is the question. This imo is one of the finest ambient albums. It really gets your mind traveling. The transitions feel honest and the feeling of natural and synth atmospheres colliding is peaceful-pleasurable, yet dark and stirring. The production is perfect; there is haze and there clarity, balaced unanimously; executing a world of power amidst this coalition of soundscapes.

Rwake Voices of Omens
Sludge metalers Rwake's strongest album. I love the darkened vibes here, they fit well with the sludge, creating an almost darkened sludge/metal album with blackened tendencies. Every instrument is on par. The drums are tits and break free of the 1, 2 beats and get jazzy on us while staying heavy; creating a powerful driving force behind those sludge filled riffs of faith. Ladies and Gents, an essential indeed here.

Awe yes my friend, the essence of emotion. Shrine creates the perfect foundation for any scene. The execution of ambient/electronic here is relative to any backdrop of emotion to a visualistic pursuit of furtherance. With production that is a fair balance of bass-heavyness and trebling electricity, every track aims to cover the low, mid, and high receptors of the human brain. The droning crust-clutter creates a psychadelic atmosphere, perfect for loosing ones self. A highly recommended of 2012, proving to be within the ranks of thy best.

Music contains great folk moments which are more stuctural than free-style flowing. The productions is modern clean and very solid and fits the music/heavier sides quite well. Also, the vocals are full of great range and always seem to fit the music perfectly. Some parts may be underwhelming but the riffs are usually 80% perfectly fitting. Worth checking. 3.5-4 |

With mellow-darkened moods they progress well using piano build-up harmonies and crusty guitars that suck you in. There are even ambient-droning synths that serve as a backdrop to their post approach; adding greater variability. Their sense of proper dynamics is what really carries Signals. The sophisticated moods are a true delight. I have high hopes for what they might do in the future. Strong post-rock rec here seons. |

Kampfar Mellom Skogkledde Aaser
Some tasty Black/Folk that comfortably fits within the stream of other solid albums within the genre but there are some closer ties to another folk bm band called Horn of which is one of my fav bands. With occasional chants in the background the music here is soothing and tasty. The production style is one that is closer to raw bm but still holding a proper balance to let those melodies play out audibly. This is definitely worth checking. Very nice to zone to. Call it active zoning if you will.

Lustmord The Place where the Black Stars Hang
Some fine ambience here. One of Lustmord's finest achievements. This is dark and entrancing and takes dedication to complete as this is one long a-ss album but it's worth it if you're in the mood for mind travel. This is comparable to being in a spaceship with darkened lights and little creepy creature-like beings fondling your testi hairs. In other ways it's comparable to watching Angel Black train for a gonad cupping contest. Check 'er, she's worth it.

Orrery Nine Odes to Oblivion
Psychadelic and Passionate, yet extremely bitter. All of these elements, if you're into it, can speel great quantities of beauty.rYet some of the best ideas get lost in fillers and the over use of monotonous sections. Although this is native to atmospheric BM, creativity and momentous shifts should never be overlooked.

Some strong moments, some weak moments. The vocals are solid and mixed well. The poppy moments tend to depreciate the prog moments that we know and love at times but SB still manages to blend them in quite well as these downsides are few and far between. "A Treasure Abandoned" is one of the strongest tracks here and has nice melodies and synths. "Afterthoughts" is also solid as well and contains some fresh riffs and solos. In fact, there's more strong moments than weak and this will definitely keep prog fans coming back for more but it's still just above average and doesn't hold up to true 70's gem due to lack of extreme high points. However, This is worth hearing and is easily at least a 3-4/5 album.

A solid post-rock/metal album with Tool-like song structures and vibes. The riffs are tasty but sometimes lax and stolen. The drums here would make this album stronger but he isn't as solid as Danny but he does a decent job. He's either holding back or just not expressing himself up to the potential that this album needs. Either way, it's enjoyable and worth checking out. Think more Lateralus meets Panopticon.

Some good song and some weaker boring songs with cheesy lyrics during various occassions. But the epic-lengthy 'Devils Playground' is a fantastic in depth track with great melodies and sweet vocals. The productions here is solid and very well thought-out. I like how some parts have so many layers that you don't always notice on the first listen. If more tracks were as solid as 'Devils Playground' I would def rate this higher.
The Howling Void The Womb Beyond the World
Very tasty symphonic funeral doom but the tag of symphonic is not cheese or lameness. Here we have well fitting-depressive doom with synths that create an atmosphere of sounds that fit the depressing themes perfectly. The vocals are deep and hazzy, yet powerful and the production here is perfect. You need to here this now. This one man group's release proves to be one of the strongest doom albums of 2012.

ok i have officially concluded that "Ultreise" is by far the best song on this album and one of the most emotional and moving peices of music I have ever hear; which is ironic given its relative simplicity. Yet when you listen closely it's very complex. Yes I know the contradiction but when you hear it you'll understand.

Ex Deo Caligvla
Quite an interesting effort and concept by Ex Deo's recent release, headlined by the front man of Kataklysm; Maurizio Iacono. Basically this is metal album with melodic and symphonic tones. I find myself wishing there were more dialogue and intriguing draw ins to capture my attention more as most of time I feel like I'm just listening to a melodic-death album with less-than par vox. Nonetheless the album is different than most stuff coming out nowadays so I give it props for attempting to create out the box, plus I love Roman History. A solid release for 2012 but it could be so much better if I was in control of the production and compositions hehe.

Hour of 13 333
New doom from 2012 in the vein of Sabbath, Candlemass, and Saint Vitus. There are effective riffs here and the production is tasty. Somtimes the songs get a little boring and this seems to be a step back from their previous LP. If this band took their riffs further with creativity and a stronger emphasis on dynamics they could be doing greater things.
Hour of Penance Sedition
Irreversible Ashes
isn't as good as everyone hyps it up to be but it's very enjoyable and is smooth from start to finish but it's only just ok and decent and sup
Kamelot Silverthorn
Oh what we've been waiting for. As mentioned Tommy did a great job here but he's no Roy Khan. There's an obvious flat void to the vocals where one can't help in imagining how much better the vox could have been. But Tommy is the next best thing, but still we're comparing superman to god. Fortunately Youngblood can still put together some solid compositions, and yet we're still tasting rehashed moments. Moments that probably will never live up to the bands azimuth. This is barely above average but still isn't a complete failure.

Wilderun Olden Tales & Deathly Trails
An interesting new metal-folk band with occasional riffs that sound like Wintersun, vocals that sound like Roy Khan from Kamelot but not as technically perfect. There are even occasional death style vocals that reserved for certain moments. The music is playful and enjoyable without being really cheesy. If anything there are some boring parts which draw down the score but the music is executed with sometimes, virtuosity, where you may hear the guitaristy effortlessly running through a complecated guitar line. I highly recommend any fan of folk-metal to give this a try. You may either really enjoy this or hate it. You decide.
Wodensthrone Loss
Decent Black/Folk. It flows well and favors melancholic tones as well as having good production. The low score results from underwhelming compositions that seem to stand stagnant most of the time. It is still worth checking as it's better than most of the cheesy folk music out there.
