At a glance the music seems boring and simple, but when you really take the time to listen, a masterpiece is revealed.Aphex Twin Selected Ambient Works Volume IIBlack Star Black StarBoards of Canada Music Has the Right to ChildrenSimply a must have for any fan of ambient electronic music Brian Eno Another Green WorldOne of the earliest examples of true ambient music, this album is an instant classic alone for the fact that it helped forge an entire genre and influenced countless bands and artists in the process. The music is sort of a mix mash of Eno's earlier rock music and the electronic ambient music that he would focus on more in future albums. Some of the songs rank among Eno's finest work (In Dark Trees, Sky Saw, Becalmed). Burzum FilosofemConverge Jane DoeJane Doe is an album that is so angry and brutal that many will find it intolerable. But, those that approach it with an open mind and give it a chance will most likely discover a masterpiece. The album starts off at a furious pace, opening with "Concubine", a screaming grindcore frenzy that only barely slows down for the mathy and complex "Fault and Fracture." The rest of the album stays at relatively the same pace, rarely slowing down for a few calmer moments. The album's highlight is the finale, the epic 11 minute title track that wraps everything up with perfection and leaves the listener stunned even after it's over. Jane Doe is a fantastic album and most people who give it a full listen will probably agreeDJ Shadow Endtroducing.....Elliott Smith XOFaith No More Angel DustOne of the best albums of the 90s and one of my all time favorite albumsGodspeed You! Here, the band pleasantly surprises fans with a more pop influenced approach while still maintaining their goofy, unpredictable style that they have been known so well for. Mike Patton really shines here with some of the best vocal performances that he's produced since Angel Dust. The musicianship is unsurprisingly top notch as well. The band's music is more abstract and challenging here than it ever was, I you can believe that considering how abstract and challenging their first album is. Here, the band basically crams every genre that they could possibly think of into one album and make it seem easy to pull off. Suspended Animation is a 30 track album, with very few songs exceeding 2 minutes in length, all of them walking a thin line between coherence and all out chaos. Unsurprisingly vocalist Mike Patton wrote all the music and provided a very fitting performance, filled with shrieks and noises that only he could pull off. Though, the highlight is Dave Lombardo's spot on drumming. Though despite this, Busdriver still managed to achieve a bit of popularity in the underground world, mostly due to the album's obvious highlight "Imaginary Places" being featured in a Tony Hawk video game. Busdriver's most notable talent is the ability to rap at almost impossibly fast speeds (as heard on "Imaginary Places). Unfortunately this talent is rarely displayed again throughout the rest of the album, yet, would seem to lose its charm if it were used too often anyway. Fast or not, the rest of the songs are consistently good but usually don't get too much better than that, aside for some standout shining moments (Gun Control, Along Came A Biter, The Truth of Spontaneous Human Combustion). Definitely worth a listenClams Casino RainforestCloudkicker The DiscoveryA very good effort from solo artist Cloudkicker (Ben Sharp), The Discovery is an instrumental metal album that is filled with catchy riffs and odd time signatures reminiscent to Meshuggah's Catch-33. Though unlike Catch-33, The Discovery also contains elements of ambient music that is displayed in songs like "Everything's Mirrors" and "Covington." Most of the songs are very similar in sound and structure and focus heavily on repetition of evolving riffs and patterns. Although some may understandably find it to be boring, others will simply fail to tire of its undeniable catchiness. Well, the only thing Nickelback has proven here is that they know how to play something other than chords and a few songs actually have guitar solos (gasp!). But that's as far as things go. Dark Horse is basically one bland, boring, song after another. "Something In Your Mouth" and "Just To Get High" represent the album's best moments but even they are mediocre at best. Some of the songs are downright agonizing to sit through ("Shakin Hands," "I'd Come For You," "S.E.X."). Basically Nickelback doesn't even make the slightest attempt at covering any new ground or doing anything new musically and yet again do a vast majority of the songs sound almost exactly the same.
