| Alter Bridge Blackbird |
| Amenra Mass V |
So a poor quality rip surfaced (160 kbps), and naturally, as I have no self control, I caved and listened to it. Surprise: it's the best album they've put out so far and probably the best post-metal release of the year. Yes, better than the most recent output of a certain little band on whose label Amenra were signed to in the past year. For the record, I did not expect that to happen, but hey. Also, this can only get better once A: a better quality leak surfaces, and B: once I buy the vinyl and hear the album's 5th track. And yes, this is all hyperbolic first impression bullcrap that you have every right to ignore and/or make fun of.
Also, @Nikkolae, thiz isn't the wrong art. It's the vinyl art, and the CD art is different. Also, fuck it. 5'd. |

| Yes, this does feel a bit incomplete, but the two songs are absolutely incredible. also, let's not forget that they are writing (and have been playing) completely new material - the two songs on here aren't "new" in the strictest sense of the word. This leads me to believe that they felt that these songs couldn't fit on an album with whatever they're creating now, but they wanted to get them out as studio recordings so they put this absolutely stellar release out. I believe that we can expect a "full length" 5th album within a year or two. Get psyched, bitches, but in the meantime, you can enjoy an absolutely brilliant record that stands strong with everything else this band has written. |

| Look at your Pelican album. Now look at Omega Massif's Karpatia. Now back to your Pelican... Now back to Karpatia. Sadly, that recent Pelican album isn't Karpatia, but if they got an interesting drummer and amped up the desolation they could *sound* like Omega Massif. Look down. Back up again. Where are you? You're in a MOSH, jamming to the music that Pelican could sound like. What's in your hand? Back to me. I have it. It's a hollow slab of volcanic rock, emanating music that's brimming with riffs and dark atmosphere. Look again. The rock is now Karpatia! Anything's possible when your instrumental post-metal crushes as hard as Karpatia and isn't lame like recent Pelican. I'm in a MOSH. |

It's also the most obscenely dark, crushing, and apocalyptic album of 2013 so far, and it's the most bleak thing I've heard in years. I mean, seriously: I don't know what the band were going through when they wrote this but I'm assuming it was some hella nasty shit. |

Their 3rd full-length is no exception: the most experimental and unique record of Thou's extensive discography, Summit is the summit (yee) of the band's work thus far. | All the Empires of the World Old Gods, Old Worlds, Old Wounds |
| There's much more ambient noodling on here than there was on Return (which is arguably the better album), but Old Gods is still an absolutely wonderful surprise for what has been a fairly dull February. Strangely enough, out of the album's 7 tracks, only 2 of them ("The Lion" and "St. Peter," the former of which has some pretty damned awesome Jesu-esque singing and the latter of which once again brings into play the tortured shrieks of Return) are full-on post-metaltastic songs of the type displayed on Return and Blessings. The others are post-rocky tracks and ambient interludes that are a lot less boring than you might think. |

On each of their previous albums, there were one or two tracks that blew me right the fuck away, while the rest of the album ranged from good to boring (they could have been easy 4.5s or 5s if they had, respectively, both achieved the level of greatness of As a Womb and Neptune is Dead throughout their entire runtimes). However, with TGaI, AoP have managed to create the first album of theirs that manages to wow me throughout its entire duration. Tracks 5 and 6 in particular are mind-blowingly good. |

| Nahrayan The Beginning of the End/The End of the Beginning |
| Darker, heavy-hitting post-metal with a slightly faster feel than similar bands. The general song structures are best compared to Cult of Luna and the overall atmosphere to Amenra, but for a genre so infamous for having so many of its bands merely ripping off each other and the work of better groups, Nahrayan do some abnormally strong work to separate themselves from the crowd. The blackened, Zao-esque vocals are an especially nice touch to a surprisingly awesome little Bandcamp discovery that could easily end up being one of 2012's better post-metal records. rFor a good summary of the album's sound, check opener "Demons Without Face." - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jFRWPoEpmA |

| Paysage d'Hiver Das Tor |
| First impressions: this is kind of like a bridge between Paysage d'HIver's previous black metal demos and the crunchier, spacier work of Wintherr's other project, Darkspace. Offenbarung is one of the best songs of the man's career, and represents the first time I've ever had my foot tapping during a Paysage song. Ewig leuchten die Sterne is a slower, more atmospheric number, while Macht des Schicksals really, really sounds like Darkspace (good thing) and Schlüssel is closer to Paysage's earlier work, although it spend its second half on wind sounds. Overall, this is a god damned excellent demo/album/whatever and is, in my book, second only to Winterkaelte and the s/t. Time may see it raise above those. BY THE WAY I NOW HAVE RED LETTERS NEXT TO MY USERNAME AS SUCH I AM NOW A MAN OF AUTHORITY HERE ON SPUTNIK LISTEN TO MY OPINION YOU GOD DAMNED FOOLS no i am only slightly drunk like a 5.5/10 or some shit idk bro fukc i need to write a new review soon god damn it |
| Paysage d'Hiver Nacht |
| Paysage d'Hiver/Lunar Aurora Split |
| The two Paysage tracks are good (if typical and slightly unexceptional, but still good) fare for the project, with cold, wintery atmospheres and some of the best vocals in modern black metal. The Lunar Aurora track, on the other hand, is easily one of the best black metal tracks I have had the pleasure of hearing in an extremely long time. It's difficult to describe exactly why this 20-minute behemoth is so awesome, so just give it a listen and find out for yourself. |

| If you dug Downfall of Gaia's latest, then this album is what you absolutely must listen to next. A fairly similar, very well-concocted blend of crust punk, black metal, and post-metal, albeit with a bit more of an emphasis on the crust side of their sound. Highly recommended. |

| Thou Peasant |

But seriously, this album is pretty short, it's a free download on their Bandcamp, and it's one of the most surprisingly awesome things to come out of the genre this year. | Addaura Burning for the Ancient |
| It's a genuinely good album slightly let down by the fact that its production lacks a lot of punch (idk exactly how to describe it: "punch" was the closest I could come up with): badsically, the whole thing could be a bit more aggressive. But it's still a step up from the s/t, and I can see this being bumped to a 4 in time. |
