The Body and Braveyoung Nothing Passes
[deleted stupid old soundoff]rThe apocalyptic sludge of ATWOTETTB mixed with the serene ambient/post-rock of Braveyoung's rrecent output. Of all the collaborations The Body has (have?) done over the past few years, this has rgot to be the most horrendously overlooked.

Alter Bridge Blackbird
Amenra Mass V
So a poor quality rip surfaced (160 kbps), and naturally, as I have no self control, I caved and listened to it. Surprise: it's the best album they've put out so far and probably the best post-metal release of the year. Yes, better than the most recent output of a certain little band on whose label Amenra were signed to in the past year. For the record, I did not expect that to happen, but hey. Also, this can only get better once A: a better quality leak surfaces, and B: once I buy the vinyl and hear the album's 5th track. And yes, this is all hyperbolic first impression bullcrap that you have every right to ignore and/or make fun of.

Also, @Nikkolae, thiz isn't the wrong art. It's the vinyl art, and the CD art is different. Also, fuck it. 5'd.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!
Yes, this does feel a bit incomplete, but the two songs are absolutely incredible. also, let's not forget that they are writing (and have been playing) completely new material - the two songs on here aren't "new" in the strictest sense of the word. This leads me to believe that they felt that these songs couldn't fit on an album with whatever they're creating now, but they wanted to get them out as studio recordings so they put this absolutely stellar release out. I believe that we can expect a "full length" 5th album within a year or two. Get psyched, bitches, but in the meantime, you can enjoy an absolutely brilliant record that stands strong with everything else this band has written.

The KDot OST is getting a lot of attention (rightfully so, it's a great album) but man, people are sleeping on the movie score. One of the most surprisingly great scores I've heard in a pretty long time. Easily the best MCU score front-to-back (although that's not a really high bar to clear), it's exciting, diverse, and unique. Killonger's theme (especially the one from 'Burn It All') is a serious highlight - I can't remember ever hearing trap incorporated so seamlessly into a film score. Other standouts include 'Wakanda,' 'Ancestral Plane,' 'Waterfall Fight,' 'The Great Mound Battle,' and 'A King's Sunset.'

Omega Massif Karpatia
Look at your Pelican album. Now look at Omega Massif's Karpatia. Now back to your Pelican album... Now back
to Karpatia. Sadly, that recent Pelican album isn't Karpatia, but if they got an interesting drummer and amped up
the desolation they could *sound* like Omega Massif. Look down. Back up again. Where are you? You're in a
MOSH, jamming to the music that Pelican could sound like. What's in your hand? Back to me. I have it. It's a
hollow slab of volcanic rock, emanating music that's brimming with crushing riffs and dark atmosphere. Look
again. The rock is now Karpatia! Anything's possible when your instrumental post-metal crushes as hard as
Karpatia and isn't lazy and sterile like recent Pelican. I'm in a MOSH.

Basically, this is the polar opposite of Heliogabulus in terms of speed, conciseness, and aggression. It's also the most obscenely dark, crushing, and apocalyptic album of 2013 so far, and it's the most bleak thing I've heard in years. I mean, seriously: I don't know what the band were going through when they wrote this but I'm assuming it was some hella nasty shit.

The work ethic of Thou never ceases to amaze me: in a mere 4 years as a band, they've put out 21 splits, EPs, and albums, not a single of which is bad. Here's to many more years of constantly pumping out consistently awesome sludge.

There's much more ambient noodling on here than there was on Return (which is arguably the better album), but Old Gods is still an absolutely wonderful surprise for what has been a fairly dull February. Strangely enough, out of the album's 7 tracks, only 2 of them ("The Lion" and "St. Peter," the former of which has some pretty damned awesome Jesu-esque singing and the latter of which once again brings into play the tortured shrieks of Return) are full-on post-metaltastic songs of the type displayed on Return and Blessings. The others are post-rocky tracks and ambient interludes that are a lot less boring than you might think.

Yeah, the vocals aren't the greatest (they're not bad by any means, but they aren't great either), and the bassist/the production of the bass can get a tiny bit annoying at points, but these guys still remain one of the only tech death bands that I feel can actually write a coherent song. feel-food acoustic folk. nothing original, but it's late and i'm tired and i'm writing a stupid essay about 'the role of context when considering war as a subjectively immoral entity' and this album makes me marginally more cheerful so i give not a single fuck about who this rips off as long as it's done well

A lot of people seemed to love 'Ashes,' but I had a few big gripes with it: namely, the songwriting seemed inconsistent, the blending of the myriad genre influences was really choppy at points, and the production was rough. 'Surface' fixes all three problems.
Irreversible Irreversible
It's sad that this is their final album, as they've been getting better with each subsequent release and this one continues that trend. It's probably the best post-metal I've heard out of 2015 so far. 'Fade' and 'Absent Help' are especially brilliant.

Paysage d'Hiver Nacht
Paysage d'Hiver Das Tor
First impressions: this is kind of like a bridge between Paysage d'HIver's previous black metal demos and the crunchier, spacier work of Wintherr's other project, Darkspace. Offenbarung is one of the best songs of the man's career, and represents the first time I've ever had my foot tapping during a Paysage song. Ewig leuchten die Sterne is a slower, more atmospheric number, while Macht des Schicksals really, really sounds like Darkspace (good thing) and Schlüssel is closer to Paysage's earlier work, although it spend its second half on wind sounds. Overall, this is a god damned excellent demo/album/whatever and is, in my book, second only to Winterkaelte and the s/t. Time may see it raise above those. BY THE WAY I NOW HAVE RED LETTERS NEXT TO MY USERNAME AS SUCH I AM NOW A MAN OF AUTHORITY HERE ON SPUTNIK LISTEN TO MY OPINION YOU GOD DAMNED FOOLS no i am only slightly drunk like a 5.5/10 or some shit idk bro fukc i need to write a new review soon god damn it
Paysage d'Hiver/Lunar Aurora Split
The two Paysage tracks are good (if typical and slightly unexceptional, but still good) fare for the project, with cold, wintery atmospheres and some of the best vocals in modern black metal. The Lunar Aurora track, on the other hand, is easily one of the best black metal tracks I have had the pleasure of hearing in an extremely long time. It's difficult to describe exactly why this 20-minute behemoth is so awesome, so just give it a listen and find out for yourself.

yet another band that's basically Amenra-style dark post-metal with a Converge fetish. however, I honestly could not care less about how many bands like this exist because they all tend to make awesome music, and Taste the Void are no exception. Also, "Between Walls" has the best breakdown of 2012.

wavering between a 3.5 and a 4 but it's really pretty so i guess it's a 4. i'm enjoying how
tasteful it is in terms of crescendos: they're there in some songs but they're not overbearing and
annoying
This Will Destroy You Another Language
This Will Destroy You New Others Part Two
significantly better than Part One (which wasn't bad, just underwhelming). 'Clubs' and 'Provoke'
are legit some of the best songs they've ever written.
Thou Peasant
Thou The Retaliation of the Immutable Force of Nature
Thou Tyrant
Thou Through the Empires of Eternal Void
In a massive world of incoherent excuses for cover albums, Thou bring the riffs in this standout Black Sabbath cover EP. Seriously, this thing riffs so hard.
Thou To Carry A Stone
2 songs, 11 minutes, and so much dirty Louisiana sludge riffage. Words cannot express my love for this band.
Thou/Cower War Is the Force That Gives Us Meaning: A Two Part
Cower's side is a pretty cool blend of progressive and sludgy hardcore, while Thou puts out some of the best songs of their career. Awesome split.
Thou/Haarp Reincarnation Prayer
Thou/Hell Resurrection Bay
this is undeniably the most fucking m/ split of 2012 so far. also, the packaging itself is as well-executed and pretty as the music is m/
Thou/Human Intruder A Faire Quarrell
Short but sweet, the two bands contribute a single track each of crushing, monolithic, slightly blackened sludge. This is an insanely badass split.
Thou/Kowloon Walled City July
it's been at *least* 5 whole months since Thou put something out, and their first after what is basically an extended hiatus by their standards does not disappoint. sweet Low and Soundgarden covers from both bands.
Thou/Leech We Pass Like Night, From Land to Land
Thou/Mohoram Atta The Degradation of Human Life
Thou/Moloch Tears that Soak a Callous Heart
Moloch's side is above average, but Thou. fucking Thou, man.

Toluca Act I
An absolutely stellar atmospheric black metal/screamo/post-metal hybrid. It's a pity that it's only 25 minutes long, but the title suggests that these guys will put out more stuff sometime in the future so everything is ok, I guess. But seriously, this album is pretty short, it's a free download on their Bandcamp, and it's one of the most surprisingly awesome things to come out of the genre this year. You have no excuse not to get this. rhttp://toluca.bandcamp.com/album/act-i

this rules hard, wtf just happened to this band. yeah, it's WitTR worship, but given that this is probably better than CL and that WitTR have hinted at abandoning black metal for good, i think we can make an allowance.
Abigail Williams The Accuser
Abominor Opus: Decay
Abraham The Serpent, the Prophet and the Whore
Absent In Body Plague God
Ad Nauseam Imperative Imperceptible Impulse
Addaura Burning for the Ancient
It's a genuinely good album slightly let down by the fact that its production lacks a lot of punch (idk exactly how to describe it: "punch" was the closest I could come up with): badsically, the whole thing could be a bit more aggressive. But it's still a step up from the s/t, and I can see this being bumped to a 4 in time.

If you (understandably) can't deal with overtly Christian lyrics, you probably will not enjoy this. If you grew up with CCM-ish music, however - even if you despise the never ending pit of stagnancy, sterility, and inoffensiveness that is the worship music scene - you are in for what is the best worship album since the David Crowder Band's "A Collision," and this may even be better than that.

Nahrayan The Beginning of the End/The End of the Beginning
Darker, heavy-hitting post-metal with a slightly faster feel than similar bands. The general song structures are best compared to Cult of Luna and the overall atmosphere to Amenra, but for a genre so infamous for having so many of its bands merely ripping off each other and the work of better groups, Nahrayan do some abnormally strong work to separate themselves from the crowd. The blackened, Zao-esque vocals are an especially nice touch to a surprisingly awesome little Bandcamp discovery that could easily end up being one of 2012's better post-metal records. rFor a good summary of the album's sound, check opener "Demons Without Face." - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jFRWPoEpmA

Leaps and bounds better than the debut, mostly because Spencer now sounds only 50% annoying, as opposed to 200% like last time. I'm keeping this at a 3.5 for now, but it could be bumped.

A more-or-less death/doom band try their hand at making an atmosludge album, and for the most part it works. Sure, it does indeed get repetitive (in a bad way) throughout the middle of the album, and there's nothing especially original, but it has a pretty good atmosphere and the title track is bomb as hell.

Not awful, but not amazing either. Brandon's soundoff is pretty on point: great moments screwed over by weirdly disjointed songwriting.

Hurry Up, Brothers All is Beautiful. I'm Okay to be Alive..
I Built The Cross Banish the Disconnect
On one hand, it's kind of uncool that IBtC, on their Facebook page, told all their fans to
rate this EP on Sputnik. As we all know, this strategy was used by Deuce, and while I don't
think the dudes in this band come even remotely close to that guy's level of douchebag, it's
still not a cool strategy. On the other hand, even though I hold the same opinion of the
debut that I did when I wrote my review, these guys *do* have a ton of talent, so I'll
happily give this a chance. r*btw, guys: a 0.0 is NOT a real rating.

EDIT:
Well, I listened to it and my hats off to IBtC: it's nowhere near the level of terribleness
that was present on the debut, namely because of better production. Also, they can still
play the hell out of their instruments. However, song structures are still more or less
nonexistent, and this EP also receives very few points for originality. There are other
bands who do grindy death metal/deathcore much better. And finally, it was still uncool to
whore out the EP's Sputnik page on your Facebook.

one of the more thoroughly average sludge albums I've heard in a while. Faemin is still GoAT
Red (USA) Release the Panic
I've heard worse things in my days, but considering that Innocence & Instinct is one of my favorite alt rock albums of all time this is kind of depressing. That's not to say it's all bad: Red are still some of the best in the business at mid-tempo rockers with super catchy choruses (see "Glass House"), but the difference here is that the heavy tracks are utter shit. We know that Red can make awesome heavy songs (Feed the Machine, Out from Under, etc), but this is just sad. Also, there are not enough strings here. Howard Benson is a fucking bastard.
