Alice in Chains Facelift
A good start from a great band

Facelift is the first album by the Grunge/Metal band Alice in Chains and it was released in 1990. The album starts off with an amazing song called "We Die Young", one that starts with an "in your face" riff" and is followed by a catchy vocal line by the late Layne Staley that passed away in 2002 because of a drug overdose and Jerry Cantrell. This song, as many others, is written by guitarist and backup vocalist (later co-vocalist) Cantrell and it shows that he is and has always been the brain of Alice. The next track is the famous Man In a Box, the song that separated AIC from the other Seattle bands at the time as it got much radio attention. Layne showcases his vocal skills in the strong chorus and Jerry uses a talk-box from time to time during the song that only diversifies the track much more. Then Sea of Sorrow comes with this slow pace and atmospheric guitars. Again, the rhythms of both the vocals and instruments will remain in your head for some time. Another atmospheric intro kicks in starting the song Bleed the Freak, a song in which it's chorus is just great! Cantrell provides some catchy backup vocals repeating each last word from the verses after the chorus, one of the best of Facelift. I didn't use to remember the name of this song, kind of ironic since it's name is "I can't Remember", it's just one of those songs that don't seem as good as others like the first four tracks, it's still a catchy tune though, there are no bad songs in this record. And then "Love, Hate, Love" starts. Cantrell himself called this song the masterpiece of the album. It's an atmospheric, emotional love song with very powerful and amazing vocals (especially in the chorus) and great guitar work. "It Ain't Like That" comes as the seventh track and it's a good song, slightly better than "I can't remember" but not as good as "Love Hate Love". The next song is "Sunshine". It starts like your now standard rock song from this record but then something happens. When it gets to the chorus, the song transformers into this slower and beautiful melody followed by a solo that continues the same sound - "Sunshine, sweet love my little boy". I actually thought of naming my future child Sunshine, unless it's a boy, that would be weird, but still! "Put you Down", hum, what to say? It's the standard rock and catchy song, it's good. "Confusion" is actually pretty good. It begins with this dream slow paced like rhythm that becomes this good rock song but with a great part during these lyrics "Love sex pain confusion suffering, you're there crying I feel not a thing...". The album is almost over, but before the last song there is "I Know Something ('Bout You)". From the intro to the verses this is a straight up rock song, not so much of Grunge here. The chorus is actually pretty interesting, Layne little says in the chorus providing especially a rhythm with his voice while Jerry sings "On your space, in my face, i tell you i know somethin' 'bout you, i know somethin' 'bout you". Following the rock sound of Facelift, "Real Thing" is, well, the real thing really. When you hear it will remind you of some old-school music, it's pretty good! "They said son you're going to be a good man I said thank you very much now can I borrow you five bucks yeah" - great lyrics right there! If this is not enough for rock for you, then in the end Layne screams "Sexual chocolate baby!" and here you go.
