Gojira From Mars To Sirius
Gojira L'Enfant Sauvage
Original Rating: 4

L`Enfant Sauvage unfortunately falls JUST short of its predecessors. While the songs here
are magnificent, Gojira`s mannerisms are starting to wear thin. Often you will hear the
familiar pick slide, pinch harmonics, and their distinct tapping style. This familiarity, at
times, can make certain riffs/structures seem formulaic in nature. On top of that, less
riffs exist per song. Even fewer are as memorable as guitar work they`ve conveyed in the
past.

Mostly gone are the guttural vocals found on "From Mars to Sirius". Joe now favors a styling
somewhere in between shouting and singing(compatible to choruses found on "The Way of All
Flesh"). It would have been favorable if Joe explored some of his range exemplified on the
aforementioned album. The drum work is interesting as always. As a result of the toned down
guitar work, Mario's technical prowess moves even further into the forefront. "Mouth of
Kala" is proof that he has never sounded more massive behind the kit.

Gojira have created an album that new fans will gush over. Older Gojira aficionados will
notice that the band are becoming less heavy and technical with each release. Even though
this LP has moved the band further in this certain direction, the material found on L'Enfant
Sauvage is still some of the best of 2012!

As I Lay Dying Awakened
Original Score: 3.5

A disappointing but still valiant effort. The only issue with the record is the songwriting
has taken a small step backwards. The majority of Awakened can't replicate the
heights that the instrumentation and vocal hooks achieved on their two previous releases. As
I Lay Dying have by no means crafted a bad record but in comparison to their best work,
Awakened falls short.

Edit: Album has since grown on me. Still not as good as The Powerless Rise or Oceans Between
Us though.

Reference: One - 4.5

Elliot's voice takes center stage here due to the toned down nature of the instrumentation.
While Elliot proves he is an excellent vocalist, he falls short of Dan's ability. Elliot has
an awkward cadence about him when he lets his voice get out of control. This flaw is most
evident on the beginning of "Perfection" and ending of "Dream Brother". Elliot shines on
"Origin". His voice soars over the superb musicianship, adding a depth to the song I haven't
experienced before. As a whole, I find this interpretation of "Origin" surpasses the quality
of the version found on One. Unfortunately Elliot lacks the impact needed for more
chaotic sections/songs. Moments of "April" and the Majority of "Eden 2.0" exemplify this
issue. The replacement did a fantastic job with Dan's work, but we will see Elliot's
potential come to fruition with new material.

Voices From The Fuselage To Hope
Upon first exposure, listeners will be immediately reminded of One era TesseracT.
Later, it becomes evident that slight stylistic differences exist between the bands, but
measuring those deviations almost seems over-analytical. Like TesseracT, Voices from the
Fuselage are more focused on ambient passages and songwriting than the average polyrhythmic
band. Voices from the Fuselage have crafted four excellent songs that TesseracT fans will
feel right at home with.

Liam's vocals are uncharacteristically good on this release. He uses a ton of variation and
has created many fun, catchy, choruses. The guitarist writes some pretty awesome riffs, but
I'd like to see him inject more complexity into his playing. The drum work is passable, but
nothing overly interesting. It's a shame because the percussion is extremely well produced
and punchy. Although "Dead Set on Living" is a continuation the same record written their
entire career, the refinement and song writing on this release keep the experience from
becoming stale. No filler here; Best Cancer Bats album to date!

Coheed and Cambria The Afterman: Descension
Original Score: 3

Although there are standout moments on the record, the latter half is plagued with average
instrumentation and somewhat forgettable songwriting. The dialogue intermissions, are
largely devoid of musicianship and seem tacked on.

Lyrically, the album is guilty of both pretentious tendencies and triumphant story telling.
A coherent and admittedly interesting story can be followed here, but the vocalist awkwardly
and tirelessly forces "love"(the album's theme) down the throat of the listener.

While Coheed and Cambria have crafted a decent collection of songs, I hesitate to
reciprocate the same appraisal for the entire album experience. This record is heavily
predicated on story telling. Musically, the weaker content should be left off. Conceptually,
that practice would gape the story experience.

Devil Sold His Soul Empire Of Light
Despite the lad's input, the outcome is uninteresting. Devil Sold His Soul's previous
outings displayed a masterful blend of ferocity and beauty. Empire of Light still
retains many of the band's trademarks, but is watered down to the point of no longer
adequately representing their aforementioned "yin and yang" like qualities.

The root of this misstep is the lack of balance. Meandering vocal melodies, tame
atmospherics, and monotonous guitar work, litter the majority of the album's duration.
Although these cleaner passages had proven to be an asset in the past, moderation was the
foundation of that success. Unfortunately Devil Sold His Soul have focused all of their
attention on the poorest aspect of their sound and consequently have alienated their
uniquity.
Five Finger Death Punch American Capitalist
Gallows Gallows
Gideon Milestone
Gideon conform to become even more generic =(. Unfortunately the infectious choruses found
on Costs were stripped out. The melodic leads have been dumbed down resulting in
the (often mindless)chugging as the only distinguishing factor between songs. An abundance
of breakdowns desensitizes what could have otherwise emphasized the impactful production
value of the instrumentation. Ultimately the band's lack of variety makes for a forgettable
listen.
