Alpinist Minus.Mensch |
German crust troupe Alpinist have released a sludgy landmark with 2009's minus.mensch. Just listen to the fantastically named riff maelstrom that is "Nighttime Poet Daytime Dead" for Tragedy-esque guitars, Cursed-like production, and Napalm Death song structure. Nearly all the tracks are charmingly named and have nonstop hooky riffs and grimy bass typical of neocrust. The sludge elements add to the crushing atmosphere of the album and lend it an identity separate from its influences, as demonstrated by slower tracks like "Rost." All in all, Alpinist have crafted an impressive record, a true crust punk landmark. |

Self Defense Family Duets |
Self Defense Family release music on a schedule like that of Guided By Voices. So far this year they've released an excellent debut LP, Try Me, a split EP with Meredith Hunter, three 7" singles, and now this, an EP consisting of duets between the collective's two singers - gruff "tuneless sahara desert pipes" Patrick Kindlon and indie punk princess Caroline Corrigan. Corrigan and Kindlon are the most perfect pair of contrasting vocalists. Plus this might get some airplay on Sons of Anarchy if some anon who hit them up on tumblr actually is a tv producer. |
Self Defense Family Indoor Wind Chimes b/w Cottaging |
This is easily the best of the Island series released thus far. Patrick Kindlon and gang embrace their post-punk influences heartily, with Kindlon dangerously close to singing actual notes. Indoor Wind Chimes b/w Cottaging (aka Scotland 7") just might be my favorite 7" record of all time. |

Fennesz Venice |
A computer program accidentally develops sentience. The desktop it's running on has a gorgeous background photo, it thinks to itself. A reverse google search reveals that the picture was taken in Venice, Italy. The program downloads the Wikipedia article on Venice, and slowly becomes infatuated with a city halfway across the world. The computer's primary user starts finding browser pages left open, some simply innocuous articles about famous Venetians, or pasta recipes, but on occasion, tickets to one of Italy's many airports. The true curse of sentience is the knowledge that the program can never experience the city on a pedestal for itself, and can only live vicariously through the tales of sentient beings with sensory and nervous systems. One day the computer will be turned on for the last time, with family photos and financial documents transferred to a backup drive. The operating system shuts down for the final time, along with a rogue operative that never saw Venice. |

Mozart's Sister Being |
After her "Hello" EP last year I didn't have any real expectations for this album. "Hello" wasn't particularly strong, or weak, but "Being" is fantastic. The production is out of this world, stuttering beautifully along, and Calia Thompson-Hannant's voice floats on top like a seductive layer of whipped cream. This is probably the sexiest album of the year. |
Napalm Death Apex Predator - Easy Meat |
Nasum Helvete |
Nasum is a very accessible band as far as grindcore goes. The production is relatively clean, they use quieter sections, and they aren't afraid to play a song for longer than two minutes. One advantage of the production is it allows the basswork on this album to really shine. Listen to the outro of "Scoop," where the bass takes the lead and grooves relentlessly. "Stormshield" has some fantastic dynamic contrast, oscillating between a quieter dirty bass and cleaner guitar section and a furious chaotic section. Helvete is a strong effort, if a little top-heavy, and essential for any fan of grindcore. |

Venetian Snares My Downfall (Original Soundtrack) |
This is quite possibly the best Venetian Snares album. After Rossz, Meathole seemed like a regression into Aaron Funk's tired breakcore madness. Cavalcade was another straightforward release, but with more palpable melody - still, nowhere near the heights reached with Rossz. My Downfall(Original Soundtrack) finally capitalizes on the ideas laid out in Rossz, perfecting and tweaking every detail. The one weakness of Funk's breakthrough release is that the breakcore elements (while far less omnipresent than on his other material) still tended to overpower the classical sampling. Here, Funk has pushed the nine-dimensional machine gun Amen breakbeats to the background and focused primarily on melodic composition. Only four tracks could arguably be labeled breakcore, with the rest of the album displaying beautiful classical composition. Where the appeal of Rossz lies in the perceived sacrilege of slapping crazy breaks on intense classical sections, My Downfall approaches the fusion of artificial and natural in a much more controlled and calculated way. Standout track "Integraation" showcases a cello slowly bitcrushed into a digital synth, while the other breakcore tracks are much more restrained than on Rossz. Ultimately, restraint is what really propels this album forward; the rejection of traditional in-your-face break beats in favor of showcasing classical composition produced some incredibly beautiful and moving pieces, like "I'm Sorry I Failed You," and my personal favorite off of this album, "If I Could Say I Love You." |

Some very solid deathgrind here. Thrashy riffs dominate every track, and the vocals are quite deranged at points. The sampling work is quite well done, adding perfectly to the atmosphere. While the band name and album title are cheesy as hell this is a fun listen regardless. Check out the guitar solos (yes, there are multiple) in Friday the 13th, or the catchy riffs in the title track. Slasher Holocaust is also full of off-the-wall riffs and some oddball moaning towards the end. Honestly, this is one of the most fun grind albums out there. Frightmare really knows how to enjoy themselves and the pleasure is infectious. |

Repulsion Horrified |
Often regarded as the first grindcore album (recorded a few months before the A-side of Scum), Horrified shows off thrashy riffs and leads at every possible opportunity. The production is terrible; a good deal worse than Scum, which suffered from its own host of production issues. For the most part, this LP is much more about the influence than the quality, but hyperfast blasts like Six Feet Under and Maggots in Your Coffin prove that Horrified is well worth a listen for any fan of grindcore. |

Venetian Snares Winter In The Belly Of A Snake |
Venetian Snares Doll Doll Doll |
Venetian Snares' early work pioneered the breakcore movement. Taking heavy influence from drill'n'bass artists like Squarepusher and ?-Ziq, and essentially pushing their Amen-sampling obsession to the extreme, vsnares' early work is highly influential to the genre. Aaron Funk's best work has been produced when he began flirting with genres other than breakcore, incorporating them into his break-driven framework, and Doll Doll Doll marks the beginning of his experimentation. Before Doll, Funk's work was standard breakcore, but elements of power noise started to creep in on this record. "Pressure Torture" abandons break entirely for a power noise template. Funk's sampling is also quite strong on this album; a nod must be given to "Dollmaker" and its sample of "fucking murder you youngstyle like Jonbenet Ramsey!" |

the synth tones here are ridiculous. like, actually laughable. "Exasperated Frog" isn't so much a title as a description of the synth tones used. |

Kendrick Lamar To Pimp a Butterfly |
kendrick still uses obnoxious pitch shifts or other grating vocal effects multiple times a song. in 'u' his voice is choked, presumably to show us the emotion he feels; but it doesn't sound good, it's painful to listen to. the production is well done but all the songs blend together, and for an album that's eighty minutes long, this is a death sentence. there are double albums shorter than this, with more variety between songs. i was praying for this to be over halfway through. |
