Sly and The Family Stone Stand!
Sly and The Family Stone Dance To The Music
Sly and The Family Stone There's A Riot Goin' On
After listening to the album again I think my initial rating (2.5) was harsh. I still don't think it is as good as the other Sly albums, a lot of the songs are encased with drugged up, political themes and they lose the fun displayed on the earlier albums, even 'stand!' had moments of optomism but this is full on apocalyptic funk. Encased in these social themes are some excellent songs, 'Luv 'n' Haight is funky genius, 'Family Affair' is the only song that appears fully upbeat and 'You Caught Me Smilin'' is the only personal song in the overall universal theme of the album. This is still a great album, but a classic? Maybe, there is something I'm just not hearing.
Sly and The Family Stone Fresh
Small Faces Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake
This album is a strange mix of a Cockney Knees Up and psychedelic fantasy. The first side contains mostly Cockney numbers, however the first song (the title track) is a great psychedelic instrumental, 'Rene' and 'Lazy Sunday' are sing a long numbers that initally appear annoying but turn out to be too catchy to ignore. The 2nd side tells the story of 'Happiness Stan' a surreal story steeped with strange imagery. Although, the album is very light hearted, 'Mad John' is a dark tale of an outsider not fitting in. The last track returns to the optomistic tone ('Happy Days Toy Town'). The album doesn't quite live up to American psychedelia but is still an interesting concept.

Luther Vandross Never Too Much
Vandross' debut album isn't exactly the most experimental of post-disco albums, but it has all the
ingredients that make up a strong R&B release. Deep grooves and a heart wrenching, epic 7 minute
version of Dionne Warwick's 'A House Is Not A Home' make this a glitzy, conventional, yet
competent album perfect for the casual coffee bar listener. The world famous title track is the
clear stand out.

Track Picks: 'Never Too Much', 'Sugar and Spice (I Found Me A Girl)', 'Don't You Know That?',
'I've Been Working', 'She's a Super Lady', 'You Stopped Loving Me', 'A House Is Not a Home'

Marvin Gaye Moods of Marvin Gaye
Caught somewhere between the contraints of Motown and Gaye's desire to be a jazz singer, Moods Of Marvin Gaye is an interesting listen and is as varied as a generic motown album is likely to get. I find the jazz numbers brilliant, 'Night Life' and 'One For My Baby' are the pick of the bunch. The motown is great as well, 'I'll be Doggone' and 'Ain't That Peculiar' have boundless amounts of energy. This album isn't without its faults, mainly down to production constraints but it was still a great suprise.

Erykah Badu Worldwide Underground
Erykah Badu New Amerykah Pt. One: 4th World War
Easily the album which leans most heavily towards hip-hop in her discography, with jarring audio
fragments, bizarre interludes and themes of social desolation which all add up to create a
challenging, disturbing, avant-garde listen. Not quite the classic I was hoping for, its
disjointed and frustrating structure put it on a par with Worldwide Underground for me.

Madonna Confessions on a Dancefloor
Combining disco camp and heavy-hitting contemporary dance beats, Confessions is very much a
postmodern escapade right from the get go. The first track, 'Hung Up' samples ABBA, but also sends
the middle of the road Swedish outfit pulsing into the present. The album doesn't get increasingly
darker as it goes along no matter how Madonna has tried to spin her artistry in press
releases.Unless you count a guy singing in Yemenite as somehow disturbing. Proof that you need
some form of ballad or easing of the pace to really create a classic, but the near-hour of
thumping dance tracks is a joyous, if slightly monotonous experience.

N.E.R.D. In Search Of
Their sometimes abominably clunky lyrics are hard to ignore, but this re-release with live
instrumentation rather than the synthesizer- heavy sounds of the early version give this
postmodern genre mash-up a real kick. Any derogatory comments towards women are clearly laced with
ironic ridiculousness ('Now girl kiss her boobs/And you kiss her boobs too'), but I do feel
sometimes perhaps Pharrell does go a little too far. A delightfully smooth ride if you manage to
avoid much of the vocal delivery.

Track Picks: 'Lapdance', 'Things Are Getting Better', 'Tape You', 'Run To The Sun', 'Baby Doll',
'Am I High', 'Bobby James','Stay Together'
