The guitar tone during the final minute of Je N'en Connais Pas La Fin earns this album a 5 alone. Easily one of the metal world's most accomplished, distinctive and memorable releases within the last decade. An essential listen.

A beyond intense live show resulting in the destruction of a drumkit, the snapping of multiple picks and an inordinate amount of facial hair cemented my interest in these amazing musicians. rThese guys are a mature band (i.e. they're not seventeen year olds recording in their garage), and it shows through in their performance and songwriting. Songs such as 'Souvenirs' and 'God Hates The New Facebook' tear out of the speakers with unparalleled ferocity, with delayed melodies layered atop. Definitely a slight progressive edge here. Vocal performance calls to mind the golden days of hardcore, with half-sung, half-shouted vocals intermingling with ferocious screams. The bassist has a beard.

Sage Francis Personal Journals
Sage Francis Copper Gone
After a four year hiatus Sage is back with his most emotional, technically accomplished album since Personal Journals. Following on from examples set by peers El-P and Aesop Rock, Sage Francis combines his usual visceral testosterone-tempered-with-touching-vulnerability lyrical stylings with improved production and a sense of invigoration not heard since his early days. Make Em Purr is simply heartbreaking.

Cage Hell's Winter
Cage Kill the Architect
Cage drops the punk pretense of Depart From Me for a darker, more brooding adventure. It doesn't reach the heights of Hell's Winter (but when that album has guest spots by Jello Biafra and Daryl Palumbo, how could it?) but it's still a great return to form that follows the direction hinted at by Maniac. Fuck This Game and You Were The Shit (In High School) are definite highlights.

Rosetta The Anaesthete
Coming off the back of A Determinism of Morality, by far Rosetta's strongest, most cohesive, and most realised album to date, The Anaesthete feels somewhat lackluster on first listen. Sure, Weed is still playing through a daisy chain of delay pedals longer than Bill Gates' payroll, Grossman is still alternating between overdriven grooves and melodic meandering, McMutrie is still hammering his kit with all eight of his limbs, and Armine is howling and sampling to his heart's content, but the material here lacks the scale of The Galilean Satellites, and the cohesiveness and fist-in-the-air moments of A Determinism of Morality. The album definitely gets better with more listens (with Fudo and Hara as notable standouts, distracting attention from the closer Shugyo, which could well pass for an At the Gates riff slowed down 800%), but as it stands, in its desperation to escape the clutches of the dreaded 'post-metal' label, The Anaesthete doesn't quite live up to the stellar yardstick Rosetta set for themselves with preceding releases.

A masterclass in hip-hop camp from a group whose frontman refers to himself as 'the ranch dressing of rap'. It's like 2003 wasn't a decade ago. At nearly 40 tracks, Reseda Beach could definitely do with a bit of a trim though.

The Jezabels The Brink
It seems somehow paradoxical that mediocrity can be more disappointing for a listener than an album that's downright bad, but it's an unfortunate truth. Were it not for the Jezabels' stellar discography to date, I'm sure that The Brink would be a much more enjoyable listen. However, lacking both the spine-tingling moments of vocal intensity found on tracks like Endless Summer, trademark tom rolls that almost seemed to sing the melody on tracks like Hurt Me, and the stellar, dynamic songwriting that made their past albums great, The Brink sees the Jezabels become prisoners to their own past success.
