Arcade Fire Neon Bible |
Arcade Fire The Suburbs |
After giving this incredible album several listens, it's hard to tell how this one stands compared to funeral. I can say, however, that where Funeral is a masterpiece, so too, really, is The Suburbs. The length of the album can be slightly exhausting, but I wouldn't take out a single song (although I would probably do some editing to make Ready to Start and We Used To Wait a little more interesting). Nevertheless, where a few songs sound forced and not quite like actual "songs", in the context of the album they make perfect sense. The Half Light and Sprawl songs are pure perfection, songs that equal anything on Funeral, I dare say. Sprawl II in particular is brilliant for its Blondie-esque dancefloor groove pushed forward by creepy backing vocals. Modern Man and Wasted Hours are also highlights. Month of May is the best out of the 4 initial singles. I already know that this is a leading contender for album of the year, a true stand-out in a sea of great yet slightly disappointing follow-ups this year (the national, lcd soundsystem, spoon, etc.) and a lack of exciting new bands. Bands really need to be this ambitious more often, because what we have here is somehow another unique arcade fire album, one that is leagues better than the underrated neon bible. All i can say is... WOW. |
