Modest Mouse Good News For People Who Love Bad News
i still find myself belting out lines from every single track on this album on a weekly basis, and it's been over six years since i first put this one into my CD changer. dann gallucci pulls out all the stops to make this one danceable and respectable as a musical creation, and isaac brock, as usual, write like one of those bad dreams that are actually really great to talk about once you wake up from them. unfortunately, it is almost too perfect and i find myself missing the dirty, disgruntled modest mouse, complete with isaac brock's lisp.

i'm assuming you're all familiar with the first generation of pokemon, correct? this is drowzee... if that ugly thing no one ever wanted to catch faded into an obscure life of being a creepy chillwave DJ. i didn't want to further my pokemon analogy to avoid sounding like a fucking dork but this EP has all drowzee's attacks. seriously: POUND, HYPNOSIS, DISABLE, CONFUSION. it's all there. it's all ominous as hell. i'm also waiting for someone to make dubstep out of this. it would be amazing and haunting. someone make this happen. please.

Portugal. The Man The Satanic Satanist
portugal. the man did everything right on this record, from the oldschool sounding guitars to the soulful organ chords. the satanic satanist is without a doubt the grooviest album to come out in 2009, and perfectly in time for summer. if i'm with someone who's heard this album, it's imperative that we belt out one of these catchy-ass tracks. upon first listen, this album sounds like you've heard it before, or like something you've heard your parents spin on vinyl when you were a little kid. fucking fantastic and charming.

the best skramz album to come out this year really capitalizes on the growing trend of post-rock/screamo hybrids and manages to not skimp us out on the energy of either genre. fantastic, meaningful work on the captivating atmospheric breaks, completely void of the flowery, guitar-noodling filler that invades most albums like this come out this year. the vocals are emotive and convincing and lend well to the harsh, hardcore sound they've preserved from their early releases. further proof that french people know what the fuck they're doing and are unabashedly romantic while doing it.

The Tallest Man on Earth Sometimes The Blues Is Just A Passing Bird
one of the best releases of the year. absolutely beautiful trademark guitar work, gut-wrenching songwriting, and while his voice might take a little time to grow on you, after a few listens, it strikes as the most endearing sound you've ever heard. the fact that he's been experimenting with electric guitar and accompaniment adds a whole new dimension to the tallest man on earth's already well-loved sound. it's going to be a hell of a year for this guy.

Trophy Scars Alphabet Alphabets
alphabet. alphabets is grossly under-appreciated, to say the least. i fail to understand why this album isn't at the top of everyone's list of favorite albums ever. jerry jones is a beautiful man. this LP plays off like a mature post-hardcore album at first, until we hear a dose of some hip-hop flavored beats and later, some eerie baroque-ish influence. all in all, it is cohesive and memorable. even if you think jerry and the gang's sound is an acquired taste, give their lyrics a chance, because if all else fails, those strike at the hearts of anyone listening.
Trophy Scars Bad Luck
this is the second trophy scars album to make my '5' list and i'm not even the least bit ashamed of praising them so hard. the band kills it again and this time manages to make us dance to the tune of romantic murder and betrayal. it is hard to compose an album that keeps both their old fanbase excited and attracts people who wouldn't have gotten into their old stuff otherwise. trophy scars has fucking done it. everything flows perfectly (literally, who doesn't love gapless albums?) and you'll find yourself mesmerized by not only the strings, brass and illusory guitar play, but also by that grisly plot line that'll stick in the back of your head for days.

Kylesa Spiral Shadow
kylesa are a bunch of bad-asses, doing their bad-ass activities in the most bad-assedly delicate way that bad-assery can be done. it's sludge metal in the least sludgiest way possible, often bordering on post-metal or heavy progressive rock. if you're a prog-metal type who's lost faith in anything that doesn't wank around on a fretboard track after track, or that says sludge metal is just another overtried genre that'll eventually all consolidate into one boring track and dry-swallow us whole (you know who you are), please listen to this. spiral shadow grabs you by the wrists, blindfolds you, and hoists you onto some monstrous horse-creature for some desert night-riding. if you are an infant, this will give you shaken baby syndrome... you'll probably like it.rdid i mention this band has dual vocals (female/male) and two drummers? bad ass.

Maserati Pyramid of the Sun
aside from sounding so spacey and stereotypically electronic that it might actually have been made to be the backing track to an educational biology video (or... the weather channel, kekekekeke)... this LP is fucking awesome. i tend to be pretty rude to any post-rock outfit that puts out something new and expects people to regard them as talented or original, because let's be honest here, haven't mogwai, explosions in the sky, a silver mt. zion and GY!BE done everything that can be done? apparently not, actually, because damn. pyramid of the sun is an album of epic proportions. whoever had the idea of using more hard-hitting electronic noises and drawn out atmospheric sounds and putting them in the context of 'post-rock' (though i wouldn't put this album in that category) is a genius. i hope this sends a message to every other post-rock band out there to stop boring us to tears year after year.
Mastodon Crack the Skye
mastodon's made an astonishingly focused record. no overblown sludge metal gimmick, no progressive rock fretboard wankery. it's a ton more concise than blood mountain and it's pretty clear that a good chunk of their energy was put into getting all their key elements to click perfectly (oh, it worked alright). it is the stuff of legend. crack the skye get increasingly more appealing as it progresses and continually shows us that mastodon is not just the world's passing sludge metal phase, but is definately going to cement itself as the stuff that influences future bands of the genre.

SikTh The Trees Are Dead and Dried Out
as the first sikTh album i dived into, right off the bat, i noticed the gorgeous dual vocals. if those weren't enough to give this album atleast a 3, the transitions, structures and instrumentation are tightened up to perfection. it's a fast-paced, aggressive record that catches your attention over and over again as the energy changes from ruthless, to triumphant, to anguished. the tiny details like the spoken word, and odd moments that aren't typical to a metal album are fantastic and add so much to the listening experience. the only regret on this album is when it takes that impressive musicianship for a loop of wankery and ends up sounding like cheesy power metal every now and then.
Six Gallery Breakthroughs in Modern Art
first off, let me say that six gallery is better at guitar than you are, and they're going to tell you about it. not to worry, they're not going to put you down and make you feel bad about your skills, instead they're going to pump you full of feel-good math rock juice and get you stoked about the fact that these guitar-diddling powers are in the hands of such heroes. breakthroughs in modern art is a beautiful LP. it will make your dreams come true, it will make your food taste better, it will clean your room and it will probably get you laid.

Good Old War Only Way To Be Alone
it's one of those albums that you'll want to spin on days where everything's gone right so far. sun's shining, birds are singing- hell, you may as well have springs attached to your feet. good old war's vocal harmonies are warm and dan and keith's jovial guitar play trifles around and makes you want to head out for a roadtrip to somewhere sunny and woodsy. just ignore the overly simple lyrics and take in anthony green's vocal guest solo.

- After being disappointed with Kool A.D.?s solo release, Himanshu brings us a proper mixtape from the other mind behind Das Racist. Showcasing basically what we already knew DR could do, in case you?d forgotten; humor, satire , social commentary and typical hip-hop non-sequitors, all in a flow that rolls off the tongue as casual wordfire. Despite not usually really being one for erratic mixtapes in the hip-hop scene, this release caught my attention for its frequent incorporation of desi flavor and indian bhangra samples contributing to a myriad of generally attractive beats. Only flaw here is having not released it as formidable summer jams.

Kanye West My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
after one listen of this, it's easy to see the reason why so many people hate kanye west; he is ridiculously talented and versatile. this record is all sorts of things that i will now enumerate: classic, massive, legendary, original and maniacally beautiful (oh and dark and twisted and fantastic). damn, i don't even know what else to say. i'm thoroughly glad i've never dissed mr. west in my life because i would be choking down those words now. every beat is better than the last. every verse kicks you in the face and makes you shut the fuck up and listen (atleast until you can jam along, anyway). there is nothing on this album that was implanted as 'just filler' in order to make the tracks come up to 3:00. wow, just... wow.
Kayo Dot Choirs of the Eye
this is certainly a stunning album, to say the least. as a much needed transition from maudlin of the well's tired ways, choirs of the eye is an atmospheric approach to kayo dot's distinct avant-garde post-metal style that makes excellent use of both minimalist and symphonic production. while it might not turn some ears at first, being a record that can sink seamlessly into the background, kayo dot's first is definately notable as a haunting, thought-provoking record. though sometimes off on a tangent with the layers upon layers of instruments, choirs of the eye is an exemplar experimental album.

a rash, noisy clusterfuck of clusterfucks. picture a bunch of horrifyingly anthropomorphized saxophones viciously devouring the corpses of a pride of poor, but equally horrifying-looking lions. how the fuck did all these lions die at the hands of a couple saxophones? was there a motive? or this is just a sport for these seemingly murderous saxophones? after a while, the discovery channel effect sets in; you'll forget how terrifying throat is as a piece of music. as the record appears to slowly organize itself, it'll brainwash you into thinking it has some sort of structure and harmony and by the end you'll have convinced yourself that this natural and fine and organic... until that last track, at which point you will be utterly confused about what you just listened to and whether or not you are sane.

Toro Y Moi Causers of This
as much as the sudden influx of lo-fi, chillwave shenanigans has recently made me want to pull my hair out in lieu of most of it being boring, hazy background junk that will be forgotten fairly quickly, toro y moi is quite the breath of fresh air. unlike other albums of the genre, it's dreamy yet draws attention to itself instead of letting the listener drift off in the fuzzy lo-fi swamp. if you feel like you're suffocating under the weight of too much mediocre chillwave, hit this up.

this is obvious a very personal record for the band, so it's not something anyone's likely to rip apart for being 'different' from the rest of ulver's repertoire (hell, nothing by ulver is the same, ever). this album is a beautifully reflective work that incites us to respect ulver further as serious musicians who need not stick to one genre to please their fans. i hope other experimental artists take a page out of their book and try not to be so overly flashy all the time.

i don't know why TSOAF fans give this album so much attention. yes, the layers of angular guitars and chaotic, directional playing are a pretty refreshing mix, but seriously? the interludes could be so much better, and as much as every intro to every track is incredibly solid, it always seems to fall apart within 30 seconds. the record shows off a supergroup that has an incredible amount of potential, but can't seem to compose it.

Tokyo Police Club Champ
there is no progression in TPC's sound here, nor is there any evolution. they've put out an album for those who essentially wanted to hear something similar to elephant shell and might i say, a little watered down. we've got some grand, 'get-stuck-in-your-head'-type singles here like 'favorite colour' and 'bambi', but other than that, this sounds like every other generic indie 'bro band.

Women Public Strain
as organically pleasant as a listen this is, i very much think women could have benefited from a less hazy
production and more actual direction. this starts out as a promising shoegazey lo-fi shindig and then slowly
digresses and sprawls out into a million different places and spreads itself too thin into the record. i get pretty
frustrated with how distant and indistinct it sounds.

Hellogoodbye Would It Kill You?
i don't care how much anyone wants to push the claim that this band has "matured" since their last release. if it's at the cost of their infectious, quirky synth shenanigans and grossly cute-but-relatable lyrics, with surprises at every turn, i don't want to hear any of it. none of this is bad, hell, i'll probably be singing "when we first met" in the shower tomorrow morning, but goddamn, is it ever predictable and boring. this band has suffered the same fate as weezer.

Portugal. The Man It's Complicated Being a Wizard
i don't even know man. it sounds like portugal. the man messing around with a computer accompanied with some fucking great beer and then forgetting about it the next morning, uncovering it a few weeks later and deciding to release the thing. it's a fun listen, but the entire time a general though of 'what the hell?' goes through your mind. this album had a smooth feel but doesn't seem to have any specific intention other than to entertain a little.

Lady Radiator Bounce Energy Hear Me Out
this band sounds stuck somewhere between radio rock, pop punk and an actually decent progressive band. i feel like if they'd experiment more and pace themselves, realizing prog is not about constantly blasting out every noodly riff they can think of, lady radiator could fuck shit up good. until then, they just strike me as a cheesy post-hardcore band with secret potential.

Stafraenn Hakon Sanitas
while being nicely devoid of lots of pretentious post-rock bullshit, this pleasant LP lacks a lot of force; as post-rock typically makes you feel, usually either moved by the lush soundscapes or in awe of their ferocity, stafraenn hakon does neither. it unfortunately comes off as a piece of uninspired indifference in their discography. on the bright side, if you're looking for something 'nice' and 'unabrasive' to recommend to your grandmother, here is it.

Lantlos .neon
are you all serious? this is mediocre at best - dull screams forcibly put into every track, monotonous instrumentation... too much all at once with no hope of comprehension. this is a real let-down from what i know these guys can do, and if they tried to go for a wall-of-sound type deal, they forgot the quintessential ingredient: texture. there is none of interest here. i mean, i love neige in alcest, but what the fuck happened to this release?

Minus the Bear Interpretaciones Del Oso
i don't even consider this to be part of MtB's discography. the entire thing is almost irrecognizable from the original tracks and some are just plain annoying to tolerate. minus the bear is grooving enough, remixing their tracks was just a bad idea waiting to happen.
Muse The 2nd Law
My Chemical Romance Danger Days: The True Lives of...
i'm not sure i was expecting when i initially decided to listen to Danger Days. a part of me longed for the band that had put out Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge six years ago after The Black Parade let me down immensely in 2006. My Chemical Romance has completely lost it. Danger Days plays like a condensed version of all the pop rock hits from 2003-2006 and doesn't have anything in the way of dynamics. it's essentially a mix full of nondescript teeny-bopper anthems with some added electronic noise to appeal to the mass. the whole thing is bland, and as much as i'd like to give it some points for the fun guitar solos at various points throughout the album, the overdone and tired lyrics overtop of those cheesy riffs just make me want to curl up in a corner and forget this band ever kept making music after 2004.
My Own Private Alaska Amen
the thing is too fucking long, the entire i'm sitting being all 'YO U DUN YET LOL'. these guys have one song, it's a pretty cool song, what with its neoclassical influences and skramz style drumming and vocals, but they've decided to play that song 11 times and call it an LP. no, guys. come on, bring something new to the table.
