The jaw dropping pyrotechnics of prog combined with the emotional punch of screamo make for an incredibly powerful record. Major props to Kurt Ballou's production, he manages to make the album sound suffocatingly dense yet finely nuanced. Instant classic.

Weezer Pinkerton
Forget about the multitudes of terrible bands that would later draw from this album; Pinkerton is simply one of the most outstanding examples of modern emo. That's right, emo. Throughout Rivers Cuomo displays his heart on his sleeve not proudly, but honestly. He is alternately hurt, bitter, angry, depressed, tired and jaded. At times deeply touching and others laughably embarrassing, this is what true emo is all about.

This is, hands down, my favorite driving record. Roll down the windows, turn up the volume, and cruise down the freeway while those riffs hum in your gut and Blickle's fills rattle your rear-view mirror. Simply a blast to listen to. If you haven't already be sure to grab the version with the Descendents cover for a sweet little bonus.

La Dispute Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair
If you're loath to admit the fact that you were once a fan of My Chemical Romance, but are still looking for similar music La Dispute will fit the bill. Imaginative concepts and an enthusiastic frontman are a plus, but the rest of the band's uninspired performance that pulls from the same old bag of post-hardcore tricks makes the album drag. Despite this just like MCR they manage to be surprisingly listenable, worthy of a 3.5 rating.

Boris New Album
I was all set to hate this album. I mean, let's be honest, who wants j-pop from Boris? However as soon as I heard Takeshi's giddy vocals on the first track I couldn't help but smile. From then out Boris pull out every cliched trick in the book, from corny synths to club friendly drum machines. But they sincerely sound like they're having such a good time that I can't fault them for it.

Sea Power Do You Like Rock Music?
Grandiose, anthemic stadium rock. It would be hard to deny its ability to rouse a crowd of fans. The band often goes all out - guitars blaring and drums crashing while the lead singer... whispers. The glaring contrast between the band's impassioned efforts and the front man's restrained, almost bored performance is as compelling as it is frustrating. Fans of Arcade Fire, Coldplay, and U2 will probably eat this up, but others will find it only fairly decent.

Kid Cudi Man on the Moon: The End of Day
A startlingly ambitious, concept driven hip-hop album that could have been either an amazing success or a spectacular failure. Disappointingly enough it does neither, Kid Cudi delivering a thoroughly mediocre album - despite the inspired beats and support from talented guests like Common and Ratatat, his lackluster performance manages to dull even the glossiest of production efforts.
