All the jazzy ambient goodness from the first album with the heaviness of the second. Nolly kills it on the bass, and Bulb's production went over well. Tight, clean, sharp record with a vision. |

Dark, disturbing, and chaotic as hell. If you thought UROBOROS was good, you'll love this. Diabolos is reminiscent of fan-favorite Vinushka, and Decayed Crow and Juuyoku really bring the frenzy. Some extremely proggy parts on here, and the entire band steps up their game; Shinya in particular has eye-popping drumwork in every song. If you're looking for milder music, search elsewhere, but for everyone else, this is your Album of the Year. Dir en grey responds to the darkness of the world and Japan's tragedy with an incredibly mature work. |
Dir En Grey The Unraveling |
Well done remakes that gives their older works their modern dark progressive/experimental metal edge without losing too much of the original hard rock edge. MACABRE is an absolute treat, and I find myself greatly enjoying THE FINAL. Production is sharp (same as UROBOROS' remastering & DUM SPIRO SPERO). |

Just a rock solid EP/album. Nothing -too- mind blowing, but the composition is solid, which is rrare for djenty groups. Vertigo singlehandedly puts this up 0.5 though; that track is an instant rmetal classic. Production is excellent as well. |

I really want to give this more, but the tracks just bleed together too much. Timelapse and Waves
are pretty tracks. Title track has some awesome syncopation but is kind of up and down. Rest is
solid but nothing amazing. Sleeper's thumping outro is absolutely disgusting though.
Overall, a good step forward into finding a more melodic and cohesive identity composition-wise.
Will be curious to see what their end game is. They have the potential to be more than just a
djenty groove metal band, but it'll take work. |

Would give it lower if I could, but the instruments and composition are just too good. Love the

Everything wrong with Fortress was more or less fixed here, though it comes at a cost of consistency in favor of even more experimentation.rBass is more audible and prominent, and gets more classic Arif magic. Rody is sassier than ever, which you can definitely hear in his newly penned lyrics. Moe has some really impressive spot on drumming here, and of course, Tim and Luke have excellent guitars as usual. Incredible technique. Still some things they could touch up here and there, but Scurrilous is a great record. |

Excellent musicianship as usual, and musicianship is up to another level, especially on Navene's part. Too much electronic influence though, and you can hear it for sure. Feels a tad uninspired a bit too often. Still an excellent spin, and they're improving on ~some~ of the mistakes from their first album. Look to taking the best parts of both and adding something new in their future albums. Production needs a lot of work. |

It's not that bad. I don't mind the softer stuff, but 3 filler songs and some songs that are passable at best is not up to Cynic's usual standard. Needs a little more complexity in the music, I'd argue. |

Not quite as good across the board as The Amanuesis, but that's a high bar. Slightly higher lows, but much lower peaks. The singles dropped so far are deceptive; the rest of the album grooves as hard as ever. A.W.O.L. and Mirror Image make more sense in context of the album. Mixing and mastering are much more balanced too.rIt's a little more poppy and straightforward in song structure than in the past, in addition to Chris Barretto seemingly completely forgetting how to write lyrics (seriously, Stygian Blue is so atrociously bad it manages to almost ruin the instrumentals), which make for a slightly different sound, but it's still good stuff packed with everyone's favorite groovy riffs. Shame we can't top The Amanuesis, but a good album nonetheless.rAlso, it's ridiculous how Browne always manages to get such a meaty low end without everything rsounding like complete mud. |
