| How am I really the only one who's rated this?! The album's great -- a perfect blend of social commentary with personal reflection. Beats are provided mainly by the Doomtree peeps (you know, Lazerbeak, Paper Tiger, MK Larada, the usual suspects) and each emcee from Doomtree shows up at one point or another. Do yourself a favor -- if you're looking for some unique hip hop at least check out some songs on YouTube. Highlights include 15 Blocks, So It Goes, May 1st, Key Grip (Fax) and Spinal Tap (hidden track). His flow might take a few minutes to get used to, but let this album sink in and it might not leave your ears for weeks. |

still not sure about a rating for this, but it's damn good. Kylesa are consistent as hell, and Spiral Shadow continues with the progression they hinted at on last year's Static Tensions while retaining the hardcore edge that's separated them from contemporaries Mastodon and Baroness in recent years. Definitely on par with High On Fire's latest, and maybe even a bit better.

Norma Jean would sue it for plagiarism. Meridional draws heavily (and when I say heavily, I mean those literally seem to be the only influences) from both of those albums; but unfortunately isn't quite the sum of its parts. However, it's an extremely well-executed homage, full of bone-crushing and technical riffing and improved vocals from Cory Brandan. In a year with very few truly good metalcore releases, it won't be surprising if Meridional receives quite a bit of praise and attention. |

As much as I would like to rate this higher I just can't shake the feeling that this is simply a collection of mid-tempo b-sides from The '59 Sound with some extra studio polish thrown on to make them seem fresh. What happened to the hooks and level of sincerity I've come to expect from this band? Where the Springsteen and Billy Joel influenced lyrics on previous outings sounded genuinely grounded in experience, this time it just comes off as a forced Americana schtick. There's still plenty to enjoy, and there's nothing here that you could label "bad" per se, it's just not the magical experience of an album I was hoping for.

Basically, this EP flat out rules face. Unfortunately, it doesn't even clear the 15 minute mark, which is what keeps it from rating a bit higher. However, the material that's here is stellar and deserves a hard look from anyone who digs Dark Time Sunshine, Doomtree or any other midwest-influenced indie rap.

| Just got the preorder in the mail today and from the first listen it's pretty dope -- fanboy bias (mostly) put aside. Dessa opts for more of the soul/R&B/jazz influence and slighty eschews her hip hop flavor (although only slightly) but the result is a cohesive, enjoyable listen. Not too many flaws to point out after one go-round, so the 4 rating my go up or down with repeated listens.rEDIT: Still really enjoyable (especially musically), but there's just not enough substance to warrant the 4 rating in my opinion. This is a great disc to have playing while you're doing something else, like driving or socializing, but there's not enough there to hold my interest if I'm in the mood to just listen to music. |

| I've listened to this twice now... can't say it got better on second listen. There's just not much that gets my blood flowing here -- every single beat sounds slightly subdued and down-tempo. Probably not up to the lofty standards set by some of the other Love Potion releases, but a lot of strong material here nonetheless. Irish Funeral, Delusional, King of the Psycho Flow and Rattlesnake vs. Mongoose are definite highlights. |
