4.5 superb
Tool Lateralus
Tool have long been recognised as one of the most influencial and skillful progressive metal bands on the planet, and I find Lateralus as probably the best album to back this up. Not only are the band members playing at an incredible level, with Danny producing some mesmerizing and breath-taking beats and Justin adding mysterious yet beautiful bass lines, they are putting all their incredible skill together in the best possible way to create an album that make you think what a great album really is.

1. The Grudge (8:36)
My personal favourite off the album (although there are many incredible songs on this album), the song starts with some interesting rhythms from Adam and Justin before coming to an adrupt halt were Justin resumses. Maynards chant like vocals come in strong and powerful sending shivers down the listeners spine before the song starts to get heavy. This also comes to an adrupt halt were Maynard begins some beautiful singing. This continues for a while with interesting music throughout. The song seems like it is building up to a huge climax and Tool do not dissapoint. After an incredible scream by Maynard, the whole band kicks in with heavy guitars and some of the best drumming Danny has ever recorded. A truely incredible ending to a song, leaving the listener awed at such talent. A true classic

5/5

2. Eon Blue Apocalypse (1:04)
just an interulde providing time to recover from the awesomness of 'the grudge', some quite giutars come in near the end, leading into the next track.

N/A

3. The Patient (7:13)
Not as good as the opening track but still admirable in its own right, the song shows off some of Maynards voice but the other members are not at their best on this song. Still a great track, the song picks up before the end and finishes on a good note. A solid song

3.5/5

4. Mantra (1:12)
Another track that links two others, the song is infamous for being the sound of MJK squeezing a cat to make it moan.

N/A

5. Schism (6:47)
Another great track, one of the more popular Tool songs. It features a very cool bass line and interesing drum rhythms from Danny, The songs vocals are very emotional and the song has a very beautiful section were all is quiet except the haunting guitar riff and MJK's beautiful singing. The song ends heavy with some impresive music being shown by all members. One of the beest on the album.

4.5/5

6. Parabol (3:04)
More or less the intro to the next song, Parabol is very quiet, featuring soft bass and electric guitars with ocasional cymbal rolls. Beautiful singing throughout, this song, although quiet, fits in perfectly with the album.

4/5

7. Parabola (6:03)
Heavy and complex, this is an instant classic. It features a very recognisable guitar riff and some very complex time signatures on Dannys Behalf. The song has some great sounding sections with an earie ending, creating an excellent song that never grows boring. Each band member is brilliant, and the song is one of my personal favourites

5/5

8. Ticks and Leeches (8:10)
Starts with furious drumming and prominent bass, the song is one of the heaviest on the album. After some harsh vocals and heavy guitaring the song suddenly becomes gentle and quiet. This is only however a very long build-up, leading to an epic climax with some great drumming and an even greater scream from MJK. All in all a superb song

4.5/5

9. Lateralus (9:24)
starts very quiet with something brewing slowly underneath, the song comes in with a very likeable riff leading onto some mysterious singing. The song returns to the chorus a few times before leading off to a long ending. This song seems like a great journey, making us feel quite sad once it is over. Very catchy and great to listen to, the title track fails to dissapoint.

5/5

10. Disposition (4:46)
A much differnet song to the earlier songs, the song is focussed around a cool bass line with some ethnic drum sonds and quiet singing. Nice to listen to when you are chilling and acts as a nice change from the heaviness of the earlier songs.

4/5

11. Reflection (11:07)
Although a fan favourite, I could never get into this song and to this day rarely listen to it. It is similair to Disposition in that it is predominately quiet, however it is much longer and Maynard provides us with some interesting singing. To me it seems to drag on near the end, however the song is still nice and showcases some of Tool's lighter stuff

2.5/5

12.Triad (8:46)
A long intro begins the song before a nice head-banging riff comes in and really gets the song going. Instantly likeable, Danny shows some sweet drumming and Adam has some interesting solo's to bring the song together. Although there is no singing, the song is by no means weaker than the rest and really serves as a great end to the album.

5/5

13. Faaip De Oaid (2:39)
A quiet ending to a fantastic album. However, Triad may have seemed like a better choice to end the album

N/A

An incredible album with some amazing talent being displayed, This is a must-have to metal fans but also to anyone who just wants to listen to some intelligent, skillful and inspirational music.
