A Winged Victory for the Sullen A Winged Victory for the Sullen
Anything related to either of the guys from Stars of the Lid is really fucking
good, but this is like really really fucking good |
American Football American Football
One of the most emotional albums ever made, American Football is an mesmerizing display of amazing lyrics/vocals with complex but beautiful guitar playing. Everyone can connect with the heartbroken lyrics sang by Mike Kinsella. Defiantly one of the best break-up albums ever
Ani DiFranco Educated Guess
Still to this day one of the best albums i've ever heard. Amazing amazing lyrics (yes I said amazing twice, they're that good) alongside super weird/unique guitar playing. She played all instruments on the album, recorded in an apartment in Buffalo, this is Ani at her peak.
At the Drive-In Relationship of Command
Azeda Booth In Flesh Tones
Boards of Canada Music Has The Right To Children
Music Has The Right To Children was the first electronica record i ever heard. I didnt know what to expect but i was instantly drawn in by the layered atmospheres and woozy drum loops. Every song is perfect, a piece to the big picture this album creates. The use of sampling on this record are some of the most creative ive ever heard, just adding to the plethora of amazing textures that are created. A true masterpiece of electronic music, Music Has The Right To Children will always be one of my favorite albums
Boards of Canada The Campfire Headphase
Boards of Canada Geogaddi
It took this album two weeks to become my second favorite album of all time and assured the Boards of Canada will be one of my favorite bands of all time. rMusic is Math and Dandelions are two of the best songs ever, just sayin
Boards of Canada In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country
Bon Iver For Emma, Forever Ago
The definitive break-up album, For Emma, Forever Ago is probly the saddest album ever recorded. Justin Vernon puts all of his sadness, anger, and love into the songs on this album. Ever lyric striking an emotional chord for me, this album has helped me through some really bad times. Vernon is one of the most amazing vocalists and his harmonies are beautiful and flawless.
Brand New The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me
I don't really know how to describe this album other than raw emotion. Jesse Lacey writes some of the most spine tingling, emotional lyrics I've ever heard. So there's that, and as if the lyrics weren't enough the music is complex when it needs to be, simple at the perfect times, and chaotic enough to carry the emotion behind the lyrics. rBut life is a test and I get bad marks rNow some saint got the job of writing down my sins rThe storm is coming rYeah the storm is coming
Brian Eno Ambient 1: Music For Airports
A floating soundscape, not to get lost in, but rather for it to get lost in you. Music For Airports can be the soundtrack to basically everything. Brian Eno is the ambient master
Bright Eyes I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning
Buddy Guy Stone Crazy!
The best blues album I have ever heard. Buddy Guy's guitar playing just oozes emotion, every note exactly what it should be. From blistering lines and riffs to the perfect held bend that just screams through the amp, it's all their.
Burial Burial
Burial Untrue
The crowning achievement for an artist who has created one of the most unique sounds in dubstep, Untrue is a journey through the darkest alleys of London that will leave you in awe for its entirety.
Burial Truant/Rough Sleeper

Captain Murphy Duality
City of Caterpillar City of Caterpillar
The perfect mix of fast hardcore riffs with epic post-rock build up's, City Of Caterpillar are fucking insane. A highlight in the history book of emo, this album is a masterpiece of emotional music.
Coldplay Parachutes
Parachutes is the sound of love. Chris Martins clever lyrics bring out the feelings of love and its wonders. Coldplay's debut is about as good as any debut gets
Comus First Utterance
Converge Jane Doe
(hits play for the first time) RAAA RAAA RAAA RAAA RAAA (holy fucking shit this is awesome!!!!!!)
Deerhunter Microcastle
Defeater Empty Days and Sleepless Nights
Well Defeater, you've done it again. An all out rollercoaster of punishing riffs and screams leading to the epic White Oak Doors then they hit the switch and turn to acoustic mode, a pleasant surprise as they pull it off very well and it closes out the album perfectly. Lyrically the album is amazing, but what else would you expect from Defeater at this point? This band has a great future ahead of them, and as of right now i think they've taken they're spot atop of today's hardcore scene
Deltron 3030 Deltron 3030
Explosions in the Sky The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place
Explosions In The Sky show us that although one day the earth will infact be a cold dead place, theres still hope for some true beauty to shine through before that happens.

Flying Lotus Until the Quiet Comes
Combining hazy spaced out samples with lush complex beats, this time putting his jazz influences a little more upfront Flying Lotus has created this mystical psychedelic jazzy hip-hop journey into the beautiful mind of Steve Ellison
Frank Turner Love, Ire & Song

Godspeed You! Black Emperor 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!
'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! is another piece in what has become the most riveting discography to ever exist. Words cannot describe the feeling I get when I listen to Godspeed. Everything they do is so immense, so filled with passion and emotion. These people have tapped into a level of creativity that transcends what most people could even imagine. I started to understand this after seeing them live, everyone so focused so drawn in by the noises the others and they themself were creating on the stage. They rarely took their eyes off their instrument or each other, but when they did it was almost as if the heavens had opened up and the gods themselves were looking down on us, and they could tell we were as transfixed as they were. No band will ever come close to what Godspeed is to me, and I'm more than okay with that.
GZA Liquid Swords
Headhunter (UK) Nomad
Headhunter takes a minimal approach and turns it into maximum value on Nomad. Simple track structures and hypnotic reparative pieces stack on top of each other to create a head nodding, chest rumbling hour that stands as one of the classic albums in dubstep
Hop Along Get Disowned
I can't believe someday I'm gonna die
iTAL tEK Cyclical
The forgotten holy grail of deep dark dubstep, Cyclical is a breathtaking debut album that delivers the whole way through. The atmospheres are broad and endless providing the perfect backdrop to the battle between the amazing technical beats and twisted sub bass lines

This album is just flat out fucking amazing. so much emotion is channeled into the music these guys make. some of my favorite lyrics of all time are on this record, its as if youre feeling and going through exactly what he's talking about. the guitars are genius, and the way they play off of eachothers riffs is just amazing. up there with For Emma, Forever Ago as a definitive break-up album
La Dispute Wildlife
A few days ago I was struck with the fear that Wildlife would be a disappointment compared to the peak output
they've maintained for so long now... Silly Jash why did you get your knickers in a knot, it's La Dispute we're

Neutral Milk Hotel In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Nick Drake Pink Moon
Noisia Split The Atom
Off Minor The Heat Death of the Universe
This is quickly becoming one of my fav emo albums, and it might be number one at some point. So fucking good, the music is super technical but not so much that it's off putting and the lyrics and vocals are just amazing.
Orchid Dance Tonight! Revolution Tomorrow!
The first taste of screamo music i ever had, my friend lent me this album and it was all i listened to for weeks. It was so different from anything i'd heard at the time and i was amazed by the raw emotions the songs showed. I would latter go on to find many more amazing albums in the emo/screamo genre but this will always be one of my favorites because we all remember our first time

Sorrow's debut LP is a breathtaking journey to the most beautiful places you have ever been. Heavenly vocals and a prime selection of lush samples set the perfect backdrop to Sorrow's massive twisted subbass lines and intricate, organic sounding beats. With subtle changes and details made in the beats and basslines Sorrow is able to draw the listeners attention throughout the record making it feel much shorter than its hour run time. The future is extremely bright in Sorrow's world, and it's damn beautiful as well.

16Bit Twice
Alexisonfire Alexisonfire
this album goes relatively unnoticed compared to the rest of their albums, but its by far my favorite. the band is at their most technical, going from fast chaotic riffs to post-rockish delay driven melodies. George's scream is at its best and the lyrics come ripped from every heartbroken teenagers notebook. rSWEATER!!!!!

Bon Iver Bon Iver
I knew Justin Vernon wasn't going to write another For Emma, Forever Ago. What I didn't know was wether or not that was going to be a good or bad thing, and in the end it turns out to be exactly what he needed. Musically this album goes way above and beyond anything Bon Iver has released so far, with "Perth" being their best track to date. The arrangements are lush (the acoustic and banjo interplay in "Minnesota, WI" is beautiful) and the attention to small details in the production (the double tracked/panned drums in "Holocene") really make this album shine. The only things holding this record back are the deeply relatable lyrics that make For Emma such a personal album, that being said Justin Vernon's image provoking lyrics (...high above the highway aisle/jagged vacance, thick with ice/I could see for miles, miles, miles) are still as great as we've come to expect from him, and the album closer "Beth/Rest" which is the bands attempt at an 80's soft rock track and is a very poor ending to an otherwise amazing album. Another brilliant piece of work to add to his ever growing list of releases, Justin Vernon is a legend in the making and i can't wait to see what he'll do next.

Converge You Fail Me
You Fail Me has a vastly different feel than Jane Doe, but it is still hands down one of the best hardcore records i've ever heard. Bannon's raw screams and the flawless and unrelenting wall of drums and riffs. The production on this album is some of the best ive ever heard, making this insanely good record that much better
Cymbals Eat Guitars Why There Are Mountains
Why There Are Mountains is an indie masterpiece and it deserves every bit of praise it gets. From the amazing guitar playing, to the heartfelt lyrics this album has it all. The songs are epic, sprawling and some have the tendency to change their sound so much you'd think it's a different track completely. Cymbals Eat Guitars and I eat lots of pasta, both are very good things.

This band just fucking rips!!! Fast riffs, spastic drums, AND a female vocalist?!?!?!? The band is so tight and in the short song lengths (2:41 is the longest on the album) they never lose your attention. Her scream is amazing and her delivery is perfect. From the first feedback squeal to the last chord, Punch hold your face to the speaker and crank it to 11 for 17 minutes of balls out (one could even say ball-less) hardcore

The well crafted songs flow perfectly and every note is exactly where it should be. The vocals/lyrics really add to this album making it not just another post-rock band with a bland vocalist. One of the best post-rock albums i've ever heard. |

I hated this the first time I heard it a few years back, but on this dark cloudy day on a bus something changed. rWith so many layers in his songs and such intricate arrangements this album has mucho replay value and I'm rassuming this will be the main record I listen to for the next while. Sufjan has created a mammoth album of folk rpop tunes so clever and pretty that I would marry this album if there wasn't laws against it.
Sufjan Stevens All Delighted People
I heard this after falling in love with The Age Of Adz, but All Delighted People is just more proof of how insanely talented Sufjan Stevens really is. His amazing vocals entice you throughout and his musical arrangements go from haunting dark songs to playful folk tunes. "Destruction" is a massive roller that will destroy any dance floor it's dropped on, and on the flip there's "Poseidon" which is quite the opposite. It's lush synths and minimal percussion pull you away to another world as its pulsing bassline keeps the track driving forward. Long live the king!!!

Nostra Monte I Am A Romantic
I Am A Romantic is just awesome emo period. The singers got a great scream and although the music is at
some points sloppy, it just adds to the raw feel of the album. Some of the instrumental sections almost sound
like This Is A Long Drive era Modest Mouse, but just as you start to think you're iPod was on shuffle and this
isn't that emo band anymore the drums blast, guitars wail, and the vocals scream and yell until you remember
what your listening to and you don't forget again. This is Nostra Monte |

Half the vocal performances are great and the other half take away from the tracks. The grime tunes on here are superb and I hope that's a direction Alix continues to experiment with. The closer "Burn Out" is the highlight of the album, a tune sure to leave any dance floor in a pile of rubble |

The Family Sign could have been much better if only Atmosphere used a bit more quality control when
narrowing down the tracks for the record. Slug continues to be the superb storyteller that he's always been
and his flow is as smooth as ever, while the continuation of the live band sound they implemented on When
Life Gives You Lemons is once again pulled off well and adds to the record overall, but a few songs (more
specifically Bad Bad Daddy) hold the record back from being one of the best Atmosphere releases yet. |

Film School Film School
Musically Film School have shoegaze down to a science. They create dense and vast soundscapes with the delay driven guitars and smooth basslines, but then the vocals are heard and the meh starts to kick in. The vocals on this album are sub par compared to those heard on the near perfect alwaysnever EP. With that being said the vocals aren't cringe worthy so if you draw your attention to the amazing shoegaze soundscapes instead of the mediocore vocals this album is still an interesting listen.

well. Not a bad album by any means, but if they took more time perfecting their songs and found a better
vocalist I think this record would have been amazing |

The memoirs of a lost soul, Roky Erickson has been to the bottom and back with his story told in these songs. The shear emotion that seeps through these songs is overwhelming. Backed by Okkervil River, he let's us experiance what it was like to be down and out. Roky Erickson is one hell of a man, who's been to hell and back not only alive, but willing to share with everyone what it was like.
