Converge Axe to Fall |
Don't be quick to judge this collaboration effort as a normal collaboration album. Converge deserves an open mind rather than just a label of incohesive since it features a wide array of hardcore artists. Axe To Fall is a great album in the correct context.
At this point in their legendary career Converge are spreading the wealth, so to speak. This album is being released simply because Converge can and still will do what they enjoy, that is playing hardcore music. It does expand the boundaries of Converge's sound somewhat with more noticeable influences from post-metal and even a acoustic track, but it doesn't feel as legitimately experimental as some of their previous works. Or in other words, it isn't meant to be their magnum opus.
If you're looking for Converge with their ambition, creativity, and chemistry at it's peak refer back to Jane Doe. If you're looking for an enjoyable continuation of a legendary career give Axe To Fall a few spins.

A drastic improvement over their first release and one that is more than capable of standing alone without vocals. This is a group that can seriously shred, and they rarely let up. Their experimentation and style makes for a enjoyable listen even while being a bit show-off'ish. The tracks mainly consist of five, six, or seven plus minute jam sessions featuring a incredibly wide array of instrumentation styles (like Flamenco, Jazz, Acoustic, Progressive, etcetera), which should satisfy anyone looking for a complex instrumental record to make them think a little. |

Zozobra Bird of Prey |
A concise, straightforward, crushing, and overall top-notch sludge effort that is a vast improvement over Scofield's previous work, "Harmonic Tremors."r"Bird of Prey" is much more than a collection of sludge-noise over harsh vocals. Simplicity with stellar songwriting (the definition of high musical value) keeps this album leaps and bounds above most acts that have jumped on the post-metal bandwagon. Influence from the prototypical post-metal acts is undeniable but "Bird of Prey" is presented in a much smaller sample size with just as much if not more ferocity than early Isis or Neurosis. Scofield's powerful vocals, his sense of atmosphere, and his chemistry with Aaron Harris (Isis) make "Bird of Prey" one of the top-five best post-metal albums of 2008. |
Zozobra Savage Masters |
The biggest downfall is that the sample size is small, but it's a vinyl-only release that is the most straightforward of anything related to the Cave In band mates. It's hardcore without the glitch, drone, and noise of Old Man Gloom. In that context, in can be appreciated for just being short, sweet, and brutal. |
