5.0 classic
Black Flag Damaged
Damaged by Black Flag is a certified harcore classic, before he did stand up Henry Rollins fronted this band. Damaged, possibly their greatest album, is a pure onslaught of aggressive punk music with politically themed lyrics, with several songs which are now a staple of the genre.

Rise Above is about the best song they ever recorded, starting with tapping drums and a rolling bassline, the guitars are an awesome inclusion. Henry Rollin's vocals are awesome on this, screaming with no abandon. This formula is applied to tracks such as Spray Paint, where he uses scat vocals to full effect with the aggression of the music behind him working together in a thrilling moment.

The crowning acheivement of this is "Six-Pack" a brutish, straight-edged stomping build-up from a smooth, punchy bassline as Rollins shoots off about alcoholism through parody. It is certainly one of the best songs off the album. There are some awesome tracks on here, TV Party is great, Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie and Depression as well, however since most of these songs sound very much the same as one another (but, it's most definitely a good sound) it's difficult to stretch this into anything much longer. Every song on here is good.

Damaged set a legacy in the punk world, Henry Rollin's built a career out of hard work, dedicated labour and strength in perception and his stint in Black Flag was one of the pre-cursors to show of the great things to come. Everybody must listen to this album in their lives.

Leonard Cohen Songs of Leonard Cohen
The Songs of Leonard Cohen was the first Leonard Cohen album, released well in his 30's. After travelling all over the world as a poet Mr. Cohen embarked into a career in music with one of the best folk albums ever made.

Every track is lush brilliance, Suzanne is sweeping in it's beauty, as is Master Song, Winter Lady and Sisters of Mercy. Almost all these songs are little more then acoustic guitar and vocals, Leonards voice seems to get hated a lot for being dreary but I think it adds an almost surreal, mystical quality to the plucked strings that make up the songs.

The lyrics are the main draw, Cohen's background as a poet lead him to write some of the greatest songs of all time to be covered and later popularised by thousands of other artists such as Jeff Buckley. He really is an incredible songwriter. Most of these songs have a uniform melancholy to them, there is very little that changes musically but it doesn't matter because the music that is here is some of the best ever recorded.

The Songs of Leonard Cohen is brilliant, a true masterpiece of a record that often gets shunned because of being a talentless musician, but I don't think this is true at all. The chills run down my spine everytime I listen to it.
