Death Cab For Cutie Transatlanticism
Think of an amazing summer you've had. Focus hard on it. Relive the most wonderful moments in your mind, those incredible feelings you had. Well, you could've just popped this record in if you wanted instead of going to all that work. Transatlanticism is one of those records that washes over you like a long lost summer. The simple pop quality combined with the emotion filled beauty of the more drawn out atmospheric songs like the title track makes for an amazing album. "The New Year" is the perfect opener, and every song between it and the fantastic closer "A Lack of Colour" is just as appropriate and wonderful. This is easily one of my favorite albums of all time.

Johann Johannsson Fordlandia
This album is fucking brilliant. Opener "Fordlandia" is one of the most glorious tracks I've ever heard, working a simple repeated phrase into a masterpiece. That masterpiece segues into a complex yet simply stunning album filled with the beauty we come to expect from Iceland. Jóhann Jóhannsson is one of the most fascinating composers of the 21st century.
Lady GaGa The Fame
Stefani Germanotta is an artist. "Pop culture is art" the starlet says, and she invests a lot in the fashion and culture associated with being a pop diva. Yet her artistry extends beyond fashion and glitz: stagename Lady Gaga writes her songs and the shit is good. On The Fame, an album written over a two-year period, Gaga draws from several influences to make a number of knockout singles comprising a shockingly solid album. So she's artsy, a talented and educated musician, a gifted singer-songwriter and a hermaphrodite(!) on top of it. A striking combination if there ever was one, it's resulted in a killer debut. She certainly ain't no paper gangsta.

Biblical references and a sing-a-long feel can give this album a falsely childish mask, but are you forgetting what band we're talking about? The lyrics are unsurprisingly passionate, potent and clever as ever; the instrumentation has continued to grow in diversity, but electric guitars and drum set have not exited the picture, nor has Weiss' voice lost all of its grit. Most importantly the songwriting is consistently ace, resulting in beautiful chord progressions and glorious melodies. I'm happy to say I've never heard a mewithoutYou song I didn't like.

This album blows my mind every time I listen to it. Each song packs so much energy I can't sit still when I listen to it. It is extremely heavy but there's something so clean and beautiful about it; I can't compare it to any other album I've heard. "Turn Soonest to the Sea" might just be my favorite track, but then I hear pretty much any other song on the album and I'm ready to change my mind. The musicianship, technicality, and creativity on this album are unbridled, and it sounds pretty damn fine.

Animal Collective Strawberry Jam
This was easily my favorite album of 07. Almost every single track has been stuck in my head at one point since its release. "For Reverend Green" is amazing, "Fireworks" equally so, "Unsolved Mysteries", "Peacebone", every single song is brilliant. The vocals are noisily obnoxious, but at the same time they're fucking beautiful. This album is most notably louder and catchier then Feels, often recognized as Animal Collective at their best, however, this album easily challenges Feels for the top spot. It is a masterpiece.

Laura Mapping Your Dreams
This whole album has an ethereal feel to it, possibly due to Laura's employment of synthesizers, but its effect on the listener is hardly contrived. "Jericho" is a little bland, but as soon as you get to "Levodopa" the album starts to gain momentum. There is a very simple quality to Mapping Your Dreams, but that doesn't diminish the climaxes or the prettiness of certain melodies or orchestrations on it. It's a fairly unique album that most post-rock lovers should enjoy.
Laura Radio Swan is Down
Magnetic Fields i
On this record, the NYC based group led by singer-songwriter Stephen Merritt venture outside their typical synth-pop domain, bringing in more strings and guitar for a finely produced and very enjoyable album. i is quite the concept record; each track begins with the letter "i", and the tracks appear in alphabetical order. Many tracks feature banjo, as well as piano and the aforementioned guitar and strings. The leading element of the record, however, is of course Merritt's deep voice. Whether its his heartbroken tone on "I Looked All Over Town" or his dry melody on the racing "I Thought You Were My Boyfriend", he delivers. On i, Merritt has crafted another batch of clever pop songs which will be caged in your memory weeks after listening.

Belle and Sebastian The Life Pursuit
This record was my first exposure to Belle & Sebastian. The Life Pursuit is one of those albums I fell in love with on my first listen. The tracks are so cheerfully catchy they instantly engrave themselves in your memory. "Dress Up In You" might be my favorite track but its so hard to exclude the rest. The Life Pursuit is stuffed with great pop tunes which make it one of my favorite albums of all time; a criminally underrated album.

Protest the Hero Fortress
This is no Kezia. This isn't Pet Sounds either. What it is, is forty-five minutes of Arif and friends bringing the hizzy. Fortress can be obnoxious, dry, even carcinogenic, but in the end it's just too goddamn groovy for me to really be upset with it. I thought this was pretty mediocre for a while, but it has slowly nestled in my hippocampus. Basically this album is no objective masterpiece, but there's no reason why many won't find it supremely appealing. It has the ability to gloriously rape the ears of lusty fans.

Epic, haunting, blissful, this album has it all. "The Birth And Death of the Day" contains one of my favorite climaxes of all time, and the gentleness of the rest of the album although depressing at times comforts the listener. It's hard to climax so often and yet still appear creative, thus, this album does feel a little limited. However, the album still immensely satisfied me, with its pretty melodies and beautiful orchestration.

Muse Absolution
The only real crime of this album in my opinion, is the weird amount of variety on it. That being said, each song is enjoyable without the rapport you might like to find on an album. Whether its the pounding drive of Stockholm Syndrome, the poppiness of The Small Print and Time is Running Out, or the emotion of Butterflies and Hurricanes, this album delivers. There's something about Absolution that makes me want to hate it, or keeps me from replaying it very often, but I don't think its very fair for me to fault it. Matt Bellamy's genius really comes through on this album.

Blacklisted comedians bring the lulz with satirical wizardry. At work since 1978, Panthers are Vermont's eldest comedy outfit. This, the group's third album, includes opinions on depleted uranium, rape, reasons "Bush Isn't Hitler", and discussion of "Christian Terrorists".
Passion Pit Chunk of Change
I've heard "Live to Tell the Tale" played at the GAP Outlet I work at all summer long. I heard other Passion Pit songs there and was happy, but did not realize it was a Passion Pit song. Long story short, today (two days before my contract at GAP is terminated) I was finally able to discern more lyrics then "whatever happens to you" (due to a particularly strong lull in back-to-school frenzy) and successfully googled the lyrics, discovering the name of the song! I'm so fucking pleased.

Andrew Schwab is a genius, maybe. More to the point, Truthless Heroes kicks ass. One of the edgier bands of my deprived childhood I fear that this album really sucks and I was just raised to like it by being a sucky pre-teen leeching on anything controversial. Still, I defy anyone to mock "Salem's Suburbs", "Your Heroes Are Dead", "Last Meal" or "Soma". Seriously, these and every other track on this album fucking rock. bumpmi

Parabstruse Old Sentimental
Parabstruse is the name of Garry Brents solo project, established in 2004. Old Sentimental is his debut album. Self-released, for he is entirely independent, Old Sentimental shows Brents developing as an artist, prone to improvisation and post-rock textures. "Everywhere We Go" and much of the record contain the typical crescendos to waves of sonic bliss. Some like "Don't Worry Friend, The Wind Will Blow Once Again" instead explode from the start, tapering towards the end. Still, this album isn't that conventional, and is almost hindered by its eccentricities. The drumming sounds more like a drum machine then a talented drummer, and the instrumentation of the album is a little awkward. No masterpiece, Brents uncovers enough strong melodies to make this worth a listen, but not much more.
Parts & Labor Mapmaker
Parts & Labor consists of Dan Friel, B.J. Warshaw, and Joe Wong. Formed in 2002, this noise-rock/experimental group from NYC has released three studio albums. "Mapmaker", their latest, released in 2007 is a sure step forward by the group. On "Mapmaker", Parts & Labor take all the things that made "Stay Afraid" what it was and balance it out with some space, a welcome improvement. There is still plenty of the experimental and wild nature the group is based on, however, now it is supported by a little more mature of a sound. The album begins like a rocket, with "Fractured Skies" a chaotic song that is at the same time very easy to listen to. Upbeat drumming, a strong vocal melody and surging guitars make for a strong start for the record, an enjoyable fun filled rock experience.

Redjetson Other Arms
Disbanding in July 2008, Redjetson released their second record posthumously in May of 2009. Gizeh Record's labelmates of worriedaboutsatan, Glissando, and Her Name is Calla, they make post-rock in the vein of Vessels and other mathy, vocal post-rock bands with a "heavenly" tinge (whateverthehellthatmeans). There is not a lot of variation here as the group focuses on repeated patterns and ideas to create hazy atmospheres. Other Arms is a good record but it isn't that good. The singers voice and more-than-occasional blandness can make this record feel like a royal bore.

This album is decent, but has little to no replay value featuring only a few single-worthy tracks. Misery Business is of course one of them; That's What You Get and crushcrushcrush are also enjoyable. Riot flirts with being danceable but never really makes the cut as being all that fun. On the flip-side Haley sings maturely on some tracks but I just don't feel enough passion. Haley does have a great voice, and the band does back her up well, but the songs are just way too boring. This passes only as a fair pop-punk record.

Bullet For My Valentine Scream, Aim, Fire
I'd heard songs by Bullet before, but this was the first album I'd listened to. It's basically pretty bland. The title track and Eye of the Storm are extremely mediocre, featuring no standout parts and feeling totally uninspired. The vocals sounds pretty terrible as well, as are the lyrics. The transition into Hearts Burst Into Fire is just silly, a poppy song which is obscenely unimpressive. And that's the story of the album; after hearing it once there's barely a track I want to go back to. There's a bit of variety on the album but it seems like everything they try sucks, except being mediocre. Tracks like End of Days have their rare moments, but the vocals and lyrics are so bad I can't help hating it. Altogether forgettable.

This album has a few enjoyable tracks, "Hero/Heroine" and "The Great Escape" for example, but it lacks any real quality or consistency otherwise. Basically the band discovered a few catchy progressions and one or two golden melodies and thought they had something special. Well, aside from having possibly the worst band name ever this is nothing but below average pop-punk. Sometimes I feel like maybe pop-punk or pop-rock is just a below-average genre to me, but bands like Mew show me catchiness can be done in a quality manner. These guys don't have anything to offer except a musically hollow record with shoddy lyrics. Don't buy this.

Avenged Sevenfold Avenged Sevenfold
Occasionally I get concerned that my inner mocking of friends who obsess over the mainstream might be undeserved. I mean I love catchy music, maybe these mainstream bands aren't all that bad. However, I am encouraged by this record. Avenged Sevenfold has to be the worst album I've heard in a long time. Gone is any trace of the enjoyable Waking the Fallen, which they'd already basically forgotten on City of Evil. It's been replaced by whatever you call the crap on this record. All of the lyrics on the record are ridiculous, and the melodies on the record are alternately dreadful and silly. "Scream" is atrocious. "Brompton Cocktail" (I'm basically throwing out random tracks I remember; every track qualifies by being terrible) makes me want to eat bricks and stick scissors in my ears. I understand why 'emo' kids are so depressed if this is what they listen to. I'd be sad too.
