E-40 My Ghetto Report Card
E-40, despite being a mainstream rapper, creates a very solid "Yay Area" influenced hip-hop record. Tell Me When to Go pales in comparison to Muscle Cars, Gouda, Go Hard or Go Home, and Yee. Not musically or technically impressive, but solid and easy to MC to, though the lingo may be extremely foreign to this outside the West Coast.
Eisbrecher Eisbrecher
Eisbrecher is not Rammstein, which in this case is definitely a good thing. Eisbrecher's industrial synths, fantastic catchyness, and low-pitched groozy vocals all work together perfectly to make this a very powerful cd. Don't expect any difficult guitar riffs or very diverse drum parts, as these all take a back seat to the vocals and the electronic sounds.

The Human Abstract Midheaven
Clearly progressive music. The Human Abstract has evolved and morphed into the face of new music. This album is unique and finally separates them from Protest the Hero, who copies them in absolutely every way. The lyrics are groundbreaking and the vocals, despite what others say, rival the technical and aural reverie of Craig Owens or Dennis Lee. This album is hard to handle because of the sheer complexity and uniqueness of it, but it is an important album not only to rock, but to music as a whole. Truly groundbreaking.

August Burns Red Looks Fragile After All EP
Looks Fragile After All is extremely mediocre, especially the vocals and most of the songwriting. However, this is just the debut EP from the group and at times it shows glimpses of what the band would become, and the band still does some things very very well in this album. The accoustic outro to Accidental Shot Heard 'Round the World is great, and it's unfortunate that they never replicated it in further albums. Solid for a young debut, but they greatly improve on this. It's nice to see where they came from.

Dance Gavin Dance Downtown Battle Mountain
I came in to Downtown Battle Mountain expecting the best Post Hardcore album of the year, because the rating suggested so. This record is far from it. None of the songs are stand-outs, and the cd becomes monotonous to listen to. Downtown Battle Mountain is, unfortunately, just another generic offering from Rise Records. Nothing on the cd is bad, it's just that none of it is really all that good. After a few listens, I still can't tell the songs apart due to the lack of variety. I hope they do better next time.

The Devil Wears Prada does some things unique, but for the most part they are just like every other Christian metalcore band. The synths are derivitive, the vocals are grating, and the bass is non-existant. There are some good breakdowns and a few of the songs have some nice guitar parts, but for the most part this album is just really average.

Dr. Acula S.L.O.B.
If See You Next Tuesday, HeavyHeavylowlow, Waking The Cadaver, and Psyopus sounds like a dream lineup, this album is for you. If you just threw up in your mouth, avoid this release at all costs. A mixture of death grunts, spoken word, and cliche' metalcore-esque vocals, S.l.o.b. by Dr.Acula is a grindcore album for those with a sense of humor. Looking at this in terms of quality, it is terrible; however, this album is one of those "so bad it's good" type albums. Be wary when purchasing since this is not good music, just relatively interesting.
Dr. Acula Below Me
Below Me has much better production and much improved vocals, but in that they lose most of what made them enjoyable in the first place. The pig squeals are gone and the vocals are a great deal less humorous. Instead of being so bad they're funny, they're just bad. The instrumentals are as simple as ever and the synths are still as annoying and grating as before. The songs transfered from S.L.O.B. are better musically, but way less enjoyable than their counterparts.
Overall, Below Me to Dr.Acula is a lot like Before The Throne of Infection was to Annotations of an Autopsy. The band is more respectable, but they aren't nearly as fun as they were before, and in that they have become much less enjoyable. |
