Dinosaur Jr. You're Living All Over Me |
You're Living All Over Me is the essential Dinosaur Jr release. Everything that is great about the band can be found here. This is, in a way, the perfect album. YLAOM is fun, catchy, and melodic, while at the same time bleak and depressing. J Mascis has a very fitting voice, and he is one of the best guitarists of his genre. Scratch that, he's one of the best guitarists ever. Songs like Little Fury Things and In A Jar are simply beautiful, and songs like Kracked and Tarpit are catchy and uplifting, yet melancholy at the very same time. This is easily one of the greatest albums of all-time. Dinosaur Jr. is definitely not for everybody, but if you want to become a fan, look here. It's mesmerizing; it's stunning; it's a classic. |

Nick Drake Pink Moon |
Nick Drake's final album, Pink Moon, is one of my favorite albums ever. One reason why this is great is because the songs come off as upbeat, when the lyrical themes are dark and melancholy, coming straight from Drake's heart. But on top of that, there are at least 100 reasons why this is a classic. On Pink Moon, Nick has no backing band. It's just him and his acoustic guitar. However, he is one of the best acoustic players ever. His playing style is simple yet technical at the same time, and is not easily copied. Also, the album is extremely accessible, and has a notoriously short length, making it an easy listen. Drake has a voice that's quite soothing and relaxing. Overall, Pink Moon is one of the best albums ever made. If the music was as dark as the lyrics, than maybe Pink Moon wouldn't be as wonderful. Anyway, I highly recommend this album, as you will be blown away. It's short, catchy, soothing, accessible, and just a classic album. |

Pixies Doolittle |
Before I heard Doolittle for the first time, I had always liked the Pixies. On a whim, I bought Doolittle and it was one of the smartest decisions I had ever made. Doolittle has become one of my favorite albums ever, and I have listened to it over five-hundred times. It just never gets old. While there's plenty of alt rock that is bleak and no fun, Doolittle is the opposite. It's fifteen catchy songs with shouting, melody, awesome guitarwork, and a bunch of other stuff. It's like alt-pop. Every single song is catchy and just so fun to listen to. Songs like Wave Of Mutilation and Monkey Gone To Heaven are some of the greatest songs ever, and both are incredibly catchy. If you want a good time, go buy Doolittle right now. It's impossible to dislike, and I'm not joking. |
The Beatles Rubber Soul |
No band in the history of music progressed and matured like The Beatles did. When they hit the scene in '64, they were pretty bland in terms of song-writing and originality. Sure, they wrote some delightful pop songs, but they could do that forever. After just a short year of being the biggest thing since Elvis, they recorded Rubber Soul and blew everyone away. Nobody, and I mean nobody, could have guessed that The Beatles would end up writing songs like this. Before, nearly all of their songs dealt with love. Not on Rubber Soul. Sure, there are plenty of peppy pop songs dealing with love, but there's a sense of great maturity present that can be found on songs like In My Life and Norweigan Wood. It's not too psychedelic, not too bubblegum poppy, Rubber Soul is just right. It's my 2nd favorite Beatles album, and one of the best albums ever. |
The Beatles Abbey Road |
I'll keep things simple: Abbey Road is one of the greatest albums ever made. It's cheerful and upbeat yet dark and gloomy at the same time, it has a Ringo Starr drum solo, it has four to five tracks that run together as a single song, it has The Beatles' heaviest and longest song, it was made at a point in time when The Beatles hated each other but it's extremely hard to tell when listening to the album itself, and there are countless other reasons why this is a classic. It's my favorite Beatles album, and it's one of the best albums ever. Not a single bland moment goes by. Oh, and the cover is memorable and filled with Paul Is Dead clues and it's just awesome. Yeah. |
