Power Metal at is best. A cd that is accesible to anyone with an open mind. Everything about this cd is spectacular with Tarja Turunen's soaring operatic vocals leading the way with Tuomas Holopainen's stong songwriting ability and overshadowing the guitars with awsome keyboard beats. thats not to say Emppu Vuorien is bad. He lays down alot of creative and heavy riffs on this cd with some sweet solos. Theres alot of interesting drum patterns from Jukka. The bass is noticeable at times with Sami droppin some cool bass lines.Overall I think this is their best cd and their highlights include the stunning Walking in the Air,Gethsemane, and The Riddler.

This cd is just amazing. One of the best black metal cds ive heard in a while. The vocals are tortured and full of sorrow. The guitars are pretty generic black metal riffs, but the keyboards and the er-hu(eastern violin) mix together and create very sorrowfull melodies switching back the tone of the album.Overall this cd is amazing and anyone into metal should definitely check this out.

Cynic Focus
For the first time, I've listened to Cynic, hearing 6 of their songs off of various myspaces. I have played them repeatedly. I cannot believe how I never gave this band a try. Full of awesome riffs, jazzy parts that get to me, and strong vocals, this has quickly left quite an impression on me. Although the robot like vocals are a bit strange, they seem to go fit with all the electronic effects going on. I will rate this higher after I buy this.

Schmier Takes a Sledge Hammer and Kills Random People: The Soundtrack.
This is the album for people who are on the brink of exploding on their employees. Thrash metal at it's finest. Heavy riffs, the enraged vocals from Schmier and pounding rhytmns. I can't spell it but nonetheless this album hits harder than a brick to the face. Anyone into thrash or metal should already have this or may Schmier violate your sister and your mother.

Hard riffing, infectiously catchy choruses and monster costumes only a mother could love. "Would You Love A Monsterman" is the highlight of the album. Fnas of rock n roll or anything with a guitar should check this album out immediately.

Rammstein Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da
As one of those idiots who bought this record I can safely say it was worth the 10 bucks spent. Liebe is Rammstein's most consistent album in years. Crunchy guitars, floor punching rythmns, spacey electronics, some diversified songwriting and some of Till's greatest vocal work to date. What's not to love? It's fucking Rammstein bringing the goods and they bring it more often than not. As for the vulgar humor, I dont speak German and I dont really give a fuck either way.

The Birthday Massacre Violet
Strolling through Hot Topic a couple years back, I noticed a cd that stood out from the others. The Birthday Massacre was its name. I was suprised and yet excited to hear how it sounds. Gothic rock, industrial, and electronica all mixed into one with female vocals. After hearing the first song Lover's end i was entranced and bought it immediately. Strange as the music is,people should give it a try.

Unholy Matrimony Croire, Decroitre
Vladimir Cochet returns to the metal world in 2009 with Croire, Decroitre, a stunning display of black metal infused with terrific songwriting, infectious rythmns, and superb riffing. A far cry from his symphonic toying in Mirrorthrone, Unholy Matrimony is a much more aggressive affair, relying more on stellar guitar playing, speed, and Vlad's always intense vocal delivery than clean vocals, keyboards, and classical passages. One of my favorite albums of 2009 and I must say i enjoy this over the last Mirrorthrone release. Vladimir Cochet does not dissapoint here and fans of his previous work and/or well produced aggressive black metal should add this to theis lbrary as soon as possible.

Walknut Graveforests And Their Shadows
Atmospheric black metal from Russia. It's a difficult album to acquire unless you blog or search on ebay but those who man up to the task of acquiring this recives several cool points from me. "Graveforests And Their Shadows" is the bands debut album and capitalizes on the droning style perfected by Drudkh yet keeps the formula original and unique enough to stand out from the ever growing mediocrity from the black metal genre.

Arkona Ot Serdtsa K Nebu
The best folk metal album of 2008? Quite possibly, this band recently caught my eye with a lot of sponsorship seeming to catch me at every turn in the road. Fortunately all the mag raves and such turn out to be true. Arkona's music can be described as epic Russian folk metal, bolstered by the workhouse and frontwoman, Marsha Scream. She sings, screams, and chants in her native tounge delivering a lethal dose of energy to the highly melodic yet aggressive metal bite. She alos composes all of the music, man this lady is busy. The music sounds like Eluveite, in structure anyways. Solos, crushing guitars, Russian folk instruments, and compelling atmosphere, the only con would be the length and there tends to be a few filler tracks. Brutal, melodic, and always entertaining this is one of my favorite records i've heard in 2008 and I urge others to check it out. Fuckin metal.

Caliban Say Hello to Tragedy
Caliban is back baby. In 2009, these German metalcore fiends have delivered their most consistent album since 2004's The Opposite From Within. Featuring the typical Caliban formula, the dudes bust out some new moves resulting in a fresh and hip new facelift for scene kids all over. They solo now, they play piano, and they bust out some black metallish behavior in Love Song. Not for sputnik faggots who suck the cocks of Converge or Botch.

Goatwhore Carving Out the Eyes of God
Hell Ride is a nonsensical biker flick starring Larry Bishop as Pistolero, Michael Madsen as The Gent, and Eric Balfour as Commance with Dennish Hopper making a cameo. Basically, they're the ring leaders of a gang called Victors. The whole movie is gratuitous nudity, and shooting people but that's nothing when the 666'ers led by Vinnie Jones aka Billy Wings, an arrow wielding lunatic responsible for murdering Pistolero's ex as well as paying off his whole gang. David Carradine is also a 666'er god rest hsi soul. What does Goatwhore have to do with this overly graphic movie you ask? Everything.
Goatwhore perfected their blend of blackened death/thrash with old Celtic Frost and punk influences on the aptly titled Carving Out The Eyes Of God. Most brutal album name for most brutal band name. Basically, this album plays off like a soundtrack to a satanic biker gang's daily lifestyle. Whacking rival foes, drinking beer, whore houses, etc. Filled with blistering aggression, venemous christian hate, and pure bullet belt badassery, this album is perfect for inflicting some punishment on your foes. HATE!!!!!!!

Numbing The pain is the emotional track on here and just blew me away countless time after time. Anybody into metalcore should give this a try.

It Dies Today have returned to full strength. I love intelligent metal as much as the next pretentious douche, but I always had a soft spot for metalcore not of the sputnik elite variety. After the dissapointment that was Sirens, the swell old chaps from ITD dropped a motherfucking time bomb of a metalcore album. Thick chugging grooves, face fucking solos, and a dynamic good cop/bad cop attack, Lividity is one of the better metalcore records released in 2009. Haters can go fuck a diseased parrot.

Mastodon returns in 2009 with a zazzy affair. There are two kinds of records, those with and those without zazz. Fortunately, Mastodon recognizes the need for zazz and fufills the zazzieness wiht unabashed zazz. Whereas Blood Mountain lacked zazz, Crack The Skye put the music on the zazz train to zazzville. Zazzy riffs and vocals combine with a zazzy rythmn section bolstered by zazzy songwriting. Overall, Crack The Skye is an incredibly zazzy event, a fantastic star studded evening of zazz if you will.

Opeth Blackwater Park
Sometimes, its hard to approach your favourite albums with anything short of a complete fan boy attitude. Its hard to describe them with anything but complete praise, and idolisation. It is also easy to get overly pretentious when you try to recommend, so when I say Blackwater Park is the sound of Fall, the sound of raindrops cascading down a mountainside. Its the sound of emotion, love, hate and betrayal all in one. Its the sound of birth, death and life, crashing together and ending all too soon. Blackwater Park is the sound of triumph and failure, the sound of gain and loss, the sound of poetry being muttered quietly in case the emotion flutters away. Its the sound of everything you take for granted, the music that graces your ears without you even knowing, its an emotional masterpiece that will never be recreated ever again, Blackwater Park is utter bliss, a masterpiece that doesnt need to be loved by everyone, as those who do will find more than enough to last a lifetime, know that I say it as truthfully as anything Ive ever said about an album before, and for me; Blackwater Park is "almost" all of this and more. Or not.
On another note, Blackwater Falls in West Virgina is a fun place to be, so don't miss out on that.

Soundtrack Crank 2: High Voltage
Excessive sex, violence, violence and sex, gratuitous language and nudity wrapped around non stop bone breaking and blood spattering violence with random comedic scenes ranging from Chev's childhood, horse track sex, and the immense Godzilla sequence. The only way to describe Crank 2, and the seemingly impossible to kill Chev Chelios. For a movie this manical, twisted, and BallsToTheWall, there is only one man could create a movie soundtrack as pulse pounding and excessively offensive as Crank 2. His name is Mike Patton.
Mike Patton pulls together a 32 track affair transitioning from heavy metal guitars, electronic beats, heavy drumming, and cutting synth lines to deliver the savage beatdown of all beatdowns. Highly explosive, I can't even hold still while i'm writing this.
I'm off to guzzle down massive quantities of protein powder and redbull from my local health mart before attemptuing to run 15 miles, seemingly catching another sneak peek of the ridalin meets redline approach of Crank 2. Do yourself a favor, see thge movie, and acquire the mother f*cking soundtrack.

Unearthly Trance Electrocution
2008 has been a significant year for metal yet many of the finer releases tend to get overshadowed by the larger names. Unearthly Trance's "Electrocution" is one particulary fine example. Electrocution displays a rip roaring concoction of furious hardcore punk energy, sludge metal, a thundering old-school doom metal atmosphere, and even black metal at it's most intense moments. In a year where Doom metal has been practically been at the gutter finds Unearthly Trance producing one of the better records around. Fans of dark, dreary doom with heavy distortion, The Melvins, Pentagram, Goatwhore, or ehavy music need to spin this. If you don't like it, it's your loss.

Black Fag Black Fag
An entertaining cover group for the obvious Black Flag. Everything instrumentally and vocally seems to be intact with the traditional Black Flag with some glaring exceptions. For starters Black Flag's infamous bar code symbol was painted rainbow colors over the straight black finish. Another aspect is the stage names the band goes by. Liberache Morris, Greg Streishand, Cher Dykeowski, and Robo Simmons deliver some of Black Flag's greatest hits in a very gay way. Like one of the standouts from Damaged, Six Pack, was given a rainbow makeover featuring the terrible but hilarious lispy vocals of Liberache. Some of the lyrics have been re-interpreted to fit the new meaning the band holds. If you like Black Flag and/or music with a sense of humor you should give this a spin.

thestate is the biggest idiot this side of sputnik, which is quite an accomplishment considering the broad spectrum of idiocy taking place daily. You're the man and I hope you'll never stop being the man. To make this legit, Hot N Cold is a shaking, grooving, bust out the chops sing-a-long that will have all the metalheads singing along together, whether your a kvlt viking from Norway or a nonsensical, short attention spanned metal dictator from South Florida.

An impressive E.P from these young kids of 17. Transitioning between driving dual male/female vocals, S.S.R apply a Taking Back Sundy basecoat with the guitar melodies and riffing and utilize a glossy Paramore clear finish. This E.P is Florida approved by chief administrator John Hanson(Iluvtar) and regional district manager/ disciplinary instructor Wylie J. McCloskey(BallsToTheWall)

If you love painting and Alternative Press spotlight bands get on this, otherwise your just a dweeb with a lack of fashion sense and a taste in music.

Katatonia Night Is The New Day
At first Night Is The New Day came off as a pretty cool album. Their increased usage of keyboards, string instruments, and new found heaviness should have proven to be a effective formula. Unfortunately this is not the case. Extremely bland songwriting dooms this album from the get go, credited to a lack of cohesion between the new musical ideas, Katatonia's dark rock/ gothic metal base and Jonas Renske's most uninspired vocal performance to date. Seriously the biggest dissapointment of 2009 for me. This could have been so much better, but alas falls right on it's face.

Sonic Syndicate Only Inhuman
Catchy melodic death metal/metalcore from you guessed it, Sweden.Joining the next wave of Swedish metal along Scar Symmetry and Blinded Colony is Sonic Syndicate. After winning the Nuclear Blast battle of the bands and signing on quickly comes out with Only Inhuman. Extremely catchy metal with heavy and melodic riffing, cool drum patterns, and dual vocals. However the bass is practically nonexistent. Very accesible and everyone should give this a spin. Highlights include Denied,Aftermath and the ballad Enclave. Go out and buy it.

Norwegian, symphonic black metal in the vein of Emperor. The catch? They're from California, and they play cookie cutter purple metal. Copy pasta what made Emperor so great and streamline it to the point of it being sponsored by hot topic. Seriously? Hot Topic endorsed black metal? Yeah, sad to say. What's so good about this? nothing, they are a bunch of old, ugly fat dudes and girl who play the most generic, uncreative music alive. There are no redeeming aspects and no real reason to check this out if you havent heard Emperor already Record sucks and it's a real shame this band was picked up by Candlelight. For pre-teens who love Twilight but want something a little more brootal, that skinny stoner guy sporting a Cradle Of Filth t-shirt at your mall, and people who enjoy bad music.
