4.0 excellent
Belvedere 'Twas Hell Said Former Child
Belvedere Angels Live In My Town
I'm a pretty big Belvedere fan I must say. And after only hearing Fast Forward Eats the Tape and 'Twas Hell Said Former Child, I figured I'd trace their roots, and started with this very rare album. The production on the album leaves alot to be desired, and the vocals sound very low down in the mix, and even slightly strained...but it was probably recorded on a low budget and a band with the talent of Belvedere still make it sound great.
As oppposed to the high octane technical punk of Fast Forward Eats the Tape, Angels Live in My Town is more of a fast skate punk album... there's seldom a song on the album that doesn't use the classic fast punk beat, so it can be a bit samey at times, but that's only minor, and it helps the overall flow of the album.
Although the vocals aren't as smooth as they are on the later releases, the vocals and harmonies are still interesting...and vocalist Steve Rawles STILL has an enormous similarity to the voice of Nikola from Millencolin, so much that the first time I heard Belvedere I thought they hailed from Millencolin's homeland.
All in all, this is a solid album...perhaps not the best introduction to Belvedere as Twas Hell Said is, but still worth a listen..if you can find it.

STAND OUT SONGS:

1. 2nd Column

A really awesome riff kicks off the album, and it's possibly the best song on the album, it's fast, it's catchy..and has a really good solo...the chorus has some impressive syncopation.

3. Difference

Sounds like something you'd expect from Strung Out in the Twisted by Design/Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues era, and this is far from a bad thing. Probably the most melodic song on the album, and has a good chorus.

10. Not My Problem

It's a fast song, what you'd expect from Belvedere, but I think has a slight grungey feel to it, especially on the chorus.
