Iridescent, lush & layered, the combination of dream state post punk, meets the space rock
guitar mastery of Failure. Think a more layered & guitar influenced Ruin of Romantics. One of
the most emotive, moving & gorgeous albums I've ever heard.

King Crimson Live in Toronto 2015
The best live album of theirs, the extra bottom end really brings the drums to life, especially during the incredible solo during 21st Century Schizoid Man
Motorpsycho The Death Defying Unicorn
Often we list to music for entertainment, excitement, or as somewhat of a soundtrack to our
lives. Rarely though do we come across something that is timeless art, as an all encompassing
work. Most music is written as songs, even concept records like Tommy, are written a track at
a time, it's those that follow through as music more like a movement through life, or as a
story which becomes all encompassing that can transcend. Not unlike the riverting atmosphere
of something like F# A# Infinity Motopsycho craft a music journey through the Odyssey, as the
very
ocean, it's overwhelming magnitude, dwarfs the fragile lives that struggle to cross it,
through trial, tribulation, triumph, magnificence, suffering & sorrow. The Death Defying
Unicorn is a musical opus for the ages.

Shpongle Tales of the Inexpressible
The flow this album possesses, the ability to blur away time, and create an emotion of wonder, like a journey through the world's beauty, the human experience, art & culture, is like no other. The variation, tasteful restraint, care, love & passion behind the early period of Shpongle leaves such an authentically human feeling to it all. Both relaxing, soothing, but complex, involved, this is one of the finest electronic albums of all time.

(In Theory) I Witnessed The World End Through My Rear View Mir
A band whom were a precursor to Oh Sleeper & Sky Eats Airplane, very diverse metalcore, with strong melodic sense. A lot of varied elements, from pop punk, to post hardcore, with flamenco guitars, and some gorgeous harmonized lead guitar work. This possesses some remarkable production, an open, clear sound with audible bass throughout & clarity through the kit to hear everything clearly. A real lost / forgotten gem.

High energy funk rock, with excellent musicianship, piano, a drum solo, some slick lead work. The two vocalists both work fantasticly together, one sultry & emotive, the other sounding rather like Mike Patton at times. Consistently brings grooves start to finish. Shame it's not on streaming platforms.

Strong record with a consistently high quality, that grooves with excellent piano, bluesy
guitar licks and some beautiful saxophone. Political without being in your face. Best
compared in a manner to an Aussie blend of Thin Lizzy & The Rolling Stones. Barnes at
probably his most lush, soulful and crooning, and his least angry, the sound has a depth,
clarity and breadth that later records lacked, which allows the instrumentation to fully open
into its own.

The Gits were one of the most criminally underrated punk rock bands in the Seattle scene, super high energy, with the rambunctious Mia Zapata as a leader & vocalist. After her tragic rape & murder, which went unsolved for over a decade, the band would reform with Joan Jett handling vocal duties for an album to raise funds for the hiring of a private investigator for the murder investigation. What we have here is a collection of covers of the Gits songs Mia sang, some of Jetts own songs done over for this release. It's high energy, very fun, ultimately Jett doesn't quite match up to Mias standard as a vocalist, but does an admirable job as the veteran she is.

Album was 5/5 standards up till Leather Rebel, which is a good song but a bit awkward in it's riffing & how Robs vocals go over the music, recovers up till A Touch of Evil which was enjoyable but very naff / cheesy at the same time & would have been suitable on Ram it Down. One Shot at Glory has great solos, but is a pretty mediocre / b-grade track otherwise with a generally unintentionally jarring nature accompanied by very lame vocal lines and a glacial pace, feels like it was meant to be up there with Hell Patrol but just doesn't have the energy. Living Bad Dreams is also just solid, nothing too great to really hold up to such high expectations. It's like a reject King Diamond almost. Not quite as good as Priests best records (Sad Wings of Destiny & Stained Class). 4.25/5

Opeth Pale Communion
I'm unsure how people believe this album is in the same direction as Heritage. To me there is quite a difference between records. Heritage was prone to many minute, slow, draining & winding songs with jarring ideas, very mellow textures, mostly a slow record focused on trying too hard to make an atmosphere that fell flat. Musicianship for the most part there was very slow, meandering & there was a lack of busywork. Right out of the blocks this record strikes a chord much more towards Opeth's earlier sound, listen to the riffs, and you'll easily realize they're quite similar, in key, composition and even phrasing to their metal work. As an Opeth fan, and a prog rock fan, I was heavily let down by Heritage in two ways, this one brought me back round. If they beefed the distortion, added a couple screams, many here would be slapping a 3.5 or 4 on this, because it's quite bloody good.

Pantera Cowboys from Hell
Has a big place in the history of metal, a big turning point not just for Pantera, but due to their influence, a lot of the metal scene as a whole. Album has a lot of top notch tracks, the T/T, Cemetery Gates, Domination, and a few other strong songs. After Shattered the album does start to get a bit thin on quality, Medicine Man is pretty abysmal. Dime is good here, his tone heftier and more bottom heavy than before, some great solos & overall a solid, albeit not amazing performance by Rex & Vinnie. Phil is great here, however a bit below his standards on Power Metal. He uses his amazing range only on occasion. Cemetery Gates shows off everything he has, Pantera's best song.
Pantera Vulgar Display of Power
An incredibly definitive album, like it or hate it, it changed metal in a big way. Mouth For War & A New Level show a muscular new Pantera. The solo on a New Level is a facemelter by Dimebag. The "legendary" Walk is on this. A great, not amazing song, that dons an incredible solo, and big attitude. This Love must have one of the first Breakdowns of it's kind in metal, you can hear the oncoming Deathcore / Metalcore bands of later years coming along a pipeline from something like that. Fucking Hostile is fast and frantic. The 2nd half of the album slows the pace right down, some absolutely filthy tone & grooves follow, however I feel as if it's quite a lot weaker than the first half, Regular People is almost psuedo-modern hardcore (HXC) akin to Turnstile, it has slick solos, a roving & grooving bass and drums interplay, with some funkiness to Dimebags riffing. Overall the biggest hit on this album is the repetitive structures, a number of songs sit back on Dimebag's riff which remains unchanged, while Phil limits himself to his hoarse rasp except for rare occasions, a shame for such a talented singer. Live in a Hole is poor & By Demons Driven is horrific, while Rise is a indistinct fast pace, black album reject. A top heavy record, that shits the bed as it goes on. Hollow is good, but strange as a closer, not as good as Cemetary Gates, but another soft -> heavy ballad that bangs, that riff around 4:25 is filthy as fuck.

Would give this a 4.5 if not for Geddy Lee's voice. I just can't get past it enough. La Villa Strangiato was phenomenal & the instrumentation on the trees too, the lyrics are hilarious in the best of ways & I imagined Treebeard and the Ent's delivering such arguments (especially knowing the love for LoTR these dudes had).

Band has not truly captured my attention, but this release did for whatever reason. Perhaps the feeling is different, a more melancholy, almost reminiscence on the good & bad of ones life in hindsight. The production does really bring some of the nicer parts of their guitar song to life that previous albums simply just did not fully realise.

Spiderbait The Unfinished Spanish Galleon of Finley Lake
Spiderbait are a mainstay of the Australian alternative rock scene, a leading band in the late 90s & early 00s heyday, alongside contemporaries Grinspoon, Powderfinger & Silverchair. In a way, Spiderbait could be seen as a more experimental, energetic and frenetic band than their peers, playing a blend of punk rock, metal, funk and alternative with a level of slapstick humour at times. Grooving, thick basslines underscore funk riffs, with smooth jazz drumming interludes with beautiful flamenco guitar, that explode out into a grungy, thick, fuzz rock jaunt. Featuring two vocalists, Spiderbait make the most of blending gruff attitude with a femme punk energy. The Unfinished Spanish Galleon is a delightful, and refreshing slab of alternative rock.

I can understand why people rate this a classic, their reasoning, but for me it's just a very consistently great to excellent record. Parabola is exceptional, as is the title track, but very frequently it feels like songs don't quite bring the level of dynamic change, or variation that would take them up a notch. I have some qualms about how flat, dry and one dimensional the way that Tool albums are produced, it really does wear itself out. Lyrically impressive, and as varied as MJK is, I just can't quite fully get into his voice, even as someone who enjoys alt metal & even some nu metal.

Perfect mix of chunky, bombastic, heavy hardcore meets punk rock sensibility, alongside a catchy nature that brings both a moshing intensity but also the ability to bop hard. Seeing them live was a treat, the energy of the show was beyond what most hardcore, punk or metal shows bring, and I go weekly. Can totally understand where some people wouldn't get into this, it isn't your typical extreme aggression, or the pure grit that's the norm but for me it's insanely infectious in the way that a lot of really great punk rock bands of yesteryear were. Step to Rhythm still their best.

These guys have a place in Seattle music history as early pioneers of the grunge sound. Before Green River or Mother Love Bone, these dudes played the circuit and inspired members of pearl jam and Soundgarden. This record was done on reforming briefly in the 90s and it's very much akin to the early brooding Soundgarden of the 80s. Jammy, dark stuff with awesome production. Duff McKagans bass tone is killer here.

Very dark, dense DnB. Highly varied beats, a very dark complexion overall with some hardstyle influences, & harsh pads. Super rapidfire & intense at times. Drum & Bass through the lens of darkness that Perturbator has for Synthwave. Wish they'd drop using the samples as much, as they really do not need them, and letting their music breath fully as Katharsys does with his music would do better for them.

Down Down IV - Part II
Part I was pretty good overall, not amazing, this one is about the same, mostly good stuff. The biggest issue is that some songs just get stale in the last minute or so, where you go okay, you can end it now as the Chorus, what have you goes on and on and on, without a reason to need to as theres no big bluesy solo, drum frenzy or wild ending.

Not quite as good as their last few records before this. Not because of any lack of
heaviness, but because many of the riffs, guitar work is starting to sound stale, and the
heavier elements themselves sometimes just don't quite hit like previous records. Atmospheric
stuff has been added in, which brings some diversity, there's plenty to enjoy here still.
Liberation at the end is essentially a nice / pleasant filler track, good for an audiophile
to test his headphones or speakers to but pointless. I like elements of the sound they're
moving toward, vocally the kind of cleans Amazonia on the following has could raise this a
bit. I appreciate that they keep evolving as time goes on. I know people wanted to shit on
this and Fortitude, mainly saying "go back to your old style" but you could tell that style
was running short of tether, and besides, Terra Incognita & The Link showed some elements
that are being explored more here & onward. Mario is always brings the heat drumming, and
gets to sit more front and center than ever.

Very unique & innovative folk project that combines elements of folk punk, black metal, post-

production with an eerieness, like a fire burning on the frontier of collapsed society,
matching the bleak societal lamentation found in the lyrics.

I'm a hardcore fan, and have been to a lot of HXC shows over the last 13-14 years, this is a
stylistic classic in the genre, and paved the way for so many bands to come. It's also got
some very catchy riffs, you can hear so much of many bands today in this. That said, it's
definitely the case that they've been outdone by what followed, still it's a great record.

Right out of the blocks this was interesting, fretless bass, shred tapping solo followed by acoustic guitar in furious combination of early At The Gates meets Thrash. Fans of the Crown might enjoy this. Fairly raw production, and a few issues where it's a little too repetitive at 45 minutes, but still a worthwhile slab of death / thrash.

Intense, dark, industrial - techno. Synths have a harsh, noisy edge akin to hardstyle, with a very aggressive feel. Hypnotic, rapid, and intense at times, definitely a good romper for some old-school rave-shuffling, would be a treat at Defqon 1.

Layered, and dense, Yasmines vocals are varied, both her screams & clean vocals are really potent, trending between Deftones like dreaminess to potent hardcore. Solid musicianship as a basis for the sound, with some influences coming through that come from alt metal from back in 00s, without becoming too indulgent in any negative traits. Excited to see what they do next.

Bluegrass, Folk Punk with strong political lyrics critical of racism, colonialism, corporate
greed & the rich shirking their tax responsibility. Double bass, with some bop & verve, slide
guitar and some upbeat tempos. Lovely stuff coming from Mass. Ballad of a Businessman is the
most furious, passionate anti-capitalist folk I've ever heard, sang with a wild fervor, anger
& resentment.

Definitely the best of his releases, the earlier ones fall into being too much like OST music, while the more recent just lack the immaculate production, or freshness this hard. It's beautifully produced dance music with a "spacey" feel, mostly trending towards a mix of techno, trance & some glitchy IDM elements.

Scour Grey
Rips hard as hell at times, chunky, hefty tone for the genre, Phil is quite ferocious here &
it works with the way they keep his voice more buried into the line of the guitars, the
guitars are fearsome & very full bodied. Best comparison for another band is Anaal Nathrakh,
just with more lower pitched growls. Anyone who likes Scour should like Anaal Nathrakh & vise
versa. The solo on Tear Gas even reminded me of Anaal Nathrakh's Of Fire & Fucking Pigs solo,
minus the zany panning.

Sorry and the Sinatras Highball Roller
Dirty, fuzzy, very rapid punk rock, with a seriously catchy anthemic sound. It's hard to not find yourself being taken along for the ride, with underlying melodies & chord progressions that are akin to some of the amazing work of the Menzingers or Amyl & The Sniffers. Damn catchy stuff, while maintaining a fuzzy, noisy but quite clear production. Recommend checking the song Riverside as an introduction. Borrowed Time calls back to the Wildhearts, with an instantly infectious groove, & vocal hooks galore.

Blending of Thrash, Black Metal & Death Metal. Heavy, with harmonized riffs / lead work, lots of melody, & a very driving sound. This is a mid 90s proto Bodom in some ways! Immortal fans who enjoyed Sons of Northern Darkness, or those who enjoy Witchery, Destroyer 666 or even stuff by Vader should be able to enjoy this record. One of those rarer records where aggression & melody walk together without existing as separate elements. The track Godless really feels like a blackened version of a song that could have been on Death's Human album. The song Candles is pretty poor, and the album has some moments where it sags in quality.

Tonedeff Archetype
Technically gifted, with insane flow, speed & complexity, sometimes feeling akin to the
rapping equivalent to a guitar shredder becoming highly self indulgent. The lyrics
themselves, mostly brags, or whining about being overlooked, set back, or any number of ways
of trying to claw back at the industry. It's known he has an inferiority complex, in it's own
way an interesting case study & look into the way music, art or things in public domain can
affect us through jealousy, resentment & sometimes even self loathing. That manifesting into
arrogant bravado, left hollow by the true feelings of not achieving what you wanted to, or
living up to some self identified goal. Always frustrating when lyrics become to homogenic,
holding back the overall project. At least he has a highly variable lexicon, though not quite
to the extent of an Aesop Rock per say.

Sounds like a fuzzier version of In The Meantime era Helmet. Sick overall sound, if not quite as good as whom they're influenced by. Anyone reading this who is a fan of Helmet, may I recommend going & checking out the band The Mark of Cain, chect the song Familiar Territory & go from there, they're up there with Helmet too.

If this was not under the Anthrax name it would not have the reputation it does. Fueled is an amazing song, Random Acts of Senseless Violence bangs, and King Size does too. On the whole the songs range from average to solid. A shame the god awful, Vol 8. is on streaming services and not the far superior Stomp 442 or WCFYA which are both far and away superior.

Baby Animals Shaved and Dangerous
Fairly standard "rock", possibly the most apt I've heard to simply be called no frills rock of any band out there. Suze has a lovely voice, other than that there the instrumentation is simply adequate, wouldn't say any particular member is really making waves with their playing. Lights Out At Eleven is an amazing ballad, it's got some remarkably personal lyrics. Otherwise Backbone goes hard by rock standards.

Barrabus Barrabus
Noisy combo of sludgy metal riffs, relentlessly frenetic & chaotic noise rock with frenetic high pitch screeching punk vocals (not screams, just extremely pissed off yelling). At times influence of post-hardcore, but it's fleeting. Vocals can be offputting because of some tinny or hard edge manner they've recorded them, theres some really annoying effect that makes it have this grating shitty edge to them.

Not on spotify, would recommend googling it, and getting it from bandcamp - It's free / name your price if so inclined. Old-school early Metalcore, it carries an almost 90s brutal death metal feel, vocally at times being like early-Sorcery era Kataklysm & having riffs influenced along the lines of an Immolation, the breakdowns mainly. Rarely it breaks into a chugging gallop influenced from the Pantera type of school of thought.

Gucci Gucci is legit an incredible song, and was at the time ahead of the curve for so many 2010s cultural things, even it's pop-culture references carry weight later into the 2010s. Blase Blase, Go Hard (La La La) are also really fine earworms, and some of the other tracks carry a certain energy. Yeah, it's smut & trashy at times, but it's not pretending to be anything but, and carries the perfect hipster-emo rap girl schick to the nth, reminds me of girls I knew skating, and around the scene, and those I was friends Dm'ing on insta.

Vocals are pretty horrendous here, the thin production show up flaws in his mid screams which are his most frequent, good enunciation but very weak power. Guitars too thin, takes any sting out of the nastiness the riffs are laying down. Drums have a click track esque kick drum. Still, many interesting riff patterns, leads & high caliber musicianship keep this relevant.

Title Track, War Nerve, Floods, Suicide Note I & II are all good. The rest is very forgettable, actually some of it's god awful. 13 Steps to Nowhere is shockingly hard to get through, what was a groovy as fuck drum tracking by Vinnie Paul is completely choked by the most absurd vocal lines by Phil Anselmo. I'll commend them for experimenting a bit, because they really did fall far too much into a trap last album. This is just that slight bit better.

Texas in July I Am
I'm a huge August Burns Red homer, so this is right up my alley. I love love the drums on
this, they go hard. Guitars, they're pretty basic, they do well enough to be enjoyable here
and there but the riff variety falls well below ABR standard. There is also an extremely
mediocre guitar solo & wasting 2 minutes of a 32 minute record on absolute album filler on
Page One. Vocals are great though. The album wears thin as it runs on due to the samey
nature, but it's still pretty good.

Would rate this a lot higher but a 14 minute long nearly ambient track comprised of heavy distortion doesn't fly for me on an otherwise damn solid 41 minute sludge album.

Zao Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest
This is one of those, I'm meant to like it more than I do, or I feel I should because of the ratings here, but I just found the riffs to be plodding, and didn't find the overall style here either chaotic in the manner I prefer, nor all that compelling. Would have 3.5 this if not for Violet overstaying it's welcome severely.

Anthrax For All Kings
A couple of choice moments, but this overall sounded very "tired", as if Anthrax said, well
fellas we better make another record, lets stay safe with this one. Tell yourself, does this
really have an identity? It could be the latest album by any number of bands. Joey does slow
his vocal delivery down here, it goes heavily into a direction where he sounds like Dio-lite
or Bruce-lite, not quite the "punky" delivery he's used in the past. He is a good singer, not
a great one, and it doesn't fully suit him or them to do things this way truly, as his range
stays in one avenue for the most part. I think that's a problem with the album itself, the
slowness just drags it, worst exemplified by the overlong slog Blood Eagle Wings. There is an
odd idea here too of using "ambience" in a way that more so detracts than adds to the
experience. Was the absurd introduction to Defend Avenge really required? This song itself
lends almost to being a filler-tier Annihilator song, it is truly a cringeworthy song. All of
this is so frustrating for an album brining us romping psuedo-thrash ala Suzerain, Evil Twin,
and the nearly refreshing Breathing Lightning where Anthrax treads uplifting ground while
pushing a nearly BoTN Accept era riff.
Anthrax State of Euphoria
Anthrax Fistful of Metal
Architects The Here and Now
Arson Anthem Insecurity Notoriety
Should have kept the more ferocious feeling of their E.P, too many slower tracks and just doesn't carry the same insane energy quite as well, still pretty good but for 30 minutes of the style, heard tons far far better. The groove parts are weak as piss, like in polite society blacklist.

My love of Deep Purple, UFO, Whitesnake, and many other 70s hard rock bands tells me I should
really love this, but apart from Smokin' & Hitch a Ride there was just something that fell
short about this. Maybe it's that it feels so manufactured for radio or even just written in
such a commercial manner, just does not hold my interest fully. The songs feel a bit too
banal, basic & "safe" to really catch me.

Actually disappointed & felt like the first album of theirs which was a significant drop away in overall standard. Excessively artificial in sonic presentation, dated as they come. Album is frontloaded, even then I found Walk of Life more irritating than endearing. Why Worry felt like it had been going forever by the time it thankfully ended. It's hard to stomach how much they let audiophile tomfoolery get in the way of writing compelling music. Perhaps it's because Knopfler's remarkable playing is reduced to being an at times bit player, there can't be much blame on him wanting to take that 6 year break.

Cleans don't work very well, often are more awkward then anything else, see "The Wind That Moves" those vocals are just atrocious in the chorus, a complete mess. The production is shockingly poor, the guitars are severely compressed, over produced & lifeless, while the drums sound almost like a plastic kit, production needs to improve to make something of this, the harsh vocals do tend to be very one note. Clearly got some talent with their instruments, so potential is there, but it just doesn't go beyond just "acceptable, decent" there is a lot wrong here that holds this back. When they get it right, it's pretty rad, see Keep Me In The Dark or Prick for one of the better jams.

Like most of their albums, overly long, bloated with absolute dross filler material. First
half goes along pretty well at what I'd give a 3.5, the second half is a dire dull affair. I
always reach a point where I go "is this still going? Just end already" with almost all of
their records. Should be banging out 35 minute albums with all honesty.

The rating below me needs a reality check, if you count all the ratings Chewie has written,
and average them it comes to 6/10 aka 3/5, not 4/5. Why do people who rate track by track
never ever learn how to use this to rate the album itself.

Metallica 72 Seasons
Crown of Barbed Wire is a keeper, best song here easily. Other recommendations, Chasing
Light, 72 Seasons & Shadows Follow. Some cool NWoBHM influences, plus some call back to Load
/ Reload elements keep this sounding different to Hardwired. Bad tendencies like overlong
tracks, with too much of the same tempo hold this back. Lars comes across like if you set up
drums as a placeholder, Hammetts solos are very much improv & come across as additions rather
than something that elevates tracks. Album could have done with some acoustic guitar, or
something to change up the tempo & repetition. If I could more accurately rate this, it'd sit
in at 2.75 I daresay.

I'm Broken, 5 Minutes Alone are both great, Becoming, Slaughtered & Strength Beyond Strength
are solid, and the cover of Planet Caravan is great too. The rest, very very dire, hard to
get through as it's hyper repetitive, dull, every song sounds like the last chug squeal fest.
The thing with the previous records, when Pantera slowed things down, the riffs had a groove
to them that was actually palatable, a groove that was infectious, like a swaying & bobbing
line on guitar, here it's just stuck into the chugs too far, on straight forward timing. Phil
sounds horrid at times, sad such a talented vocalist limits himself to such a fake & vocally
artificial styling.

The band who did You're Standing On My Neck the Daria song. Average - mediocre quality 90s alternative rock, like a weaker L7 without much gusto. Apathetic vocally, with some very annoying choices such as a poorly incorporated electric cello - produced almost jarringly wherein it sits above the rest of the mix. Some incredibly repetitious music, with a blurred nature where each song is cut from one cloth, it sounds tired as if passion did not back the project. The bass guitar is really tasty at times, possibly the only instrument with any flair. Overall at times it's got an endearing melancholy but falls far short of their contemporaries, perhaps why they never made it.

Decent light hearted rock that throws back to Garage Rock & 70s glam rock influences. Middle
tempo, often very simple, and with a lot of dad-rock cheese. Some frustrating elements,
repeat choruses & call + response. It's some fun, nothing more & doesn't stand up to a lot of
much better music that exists out there.

Nothing too revolutionary going on here, in essence it's as if Phil Anselmo was fronting another groove based band, just this one has metalcore roots. Basically it brings the riffs, a tough man attitude, with some beefy mega fat production. If that sounds appealing, check it out, if it sounds corny or laisse faire then move on.

The official version is a crap album, in a huge way to the obtuse production, & weirdly empty sound, Sabbath sounded neutered, even when riffs get going. The Ray Gillen version is vastly superior in every capacity, and he's a lot better than Tony Martin. I'd give that version a 3.5 or even perhaps a 4. Also can I say Ray reminds me so much of Geoff Tate just not quite as in your face on that, what a vocal ability & range. The guitar just has more oomph, power & Tony is center stage there too, no wah wah on the lead lines.

Production matters more than people realise, this one has a 'blurry' production that voids a lot of energy from the music, the drums are plasticky, and overall not present enough. The album has far too many slower - mid tempo songs, the heaviness that they did possess in the past is very heavily neutered on this watered down Thrash tinged release.

Christ this is boring, just very predictable, dull, and "radio rock" friendly in the worst of ways. Makes me feel like I'm at a Gen X, 45 year old dads BBQ get together while they bang out the school of hard knocks trope, and lament their adoration for The Killers & Kings of Leon. Couldn't think of anything more cringingly white suburban 9-5 than that. They've really fallen into a paint by numbers sound, sad given early career promise.

Musicianship is fine, when the band get into some wild moments it's even great but God damn the vocals are insufferable. The screams are fine but the cleans are possibly the worst I've ever heard in any -core band, not just whiny, but the dude just flat out cannot sing worth a damn, ever heard of enunciation, or proper diction. Ruins the vast majority of songs here.

Going from a groundbreaking, amazing metal band, to creating very pale imitations of bands of decades past. As someone who loves Steven Wilsons material that was highly 70s influenced, I anticipated not being too dismayed by this, but it really does come across as such a weak effort. The melodicism is very weak here. The instrumentation is rather weak, claiming to be influenced by King Crimson, or referencing them in regards to this is quite comical, given they absolutely play rings around Opeth's most complex material, many fold on the majority of their records. Texturally, this record is just meek, there is quiet, and poised, and there is threadbare & weak, this is the latter. It reeks of moments where they thought they were quite genius, kids playing in the background while a thin mellotron plays, but it comes across like a band who aped a style they didn't fully grasp.

Mediocre Sludgy Grind record. Phil is gimped vocally from years of vocal chord torture. Have
a laugh at the middle of the title track, "I wish I could shake it off... BUT I EMBRACE IT"
*vomit*, Phil sounds like he walked off a carnival ride to drop off a munt pile. The low
growls are good, the black metal rasps are piss weak - an inferior version of a Blut Aus Nord
like rasp, while his yells are characterless &
can't carry the strength they once did. Chaotic riffs, crusty tones, and relentless frenetic
drumming, but without songwriting chops to really carry it off.

Do yourself a favor, treat this as an E.P, listen only to the first three tracks, especially
Stain of Mind which is an amazing song, then skip the rest. The album really nosedives into a
repetitious, weak & uninspired slog of mediocre riffs & middling tempos where Slayer have
always faltered. This is the slayer Nu-Metal experience, however there are better Numetal
albums out there & they're quite poor at the style.

Ten Ways The Solution
Canadian progressive / alternative rock band featuring two members of the Devin Townsend Band
/ Project. Decent musicianship, and competent vocals. Production is very clear, but
excessively dry & lacking organic
tactility. Often feeling like a bunch of instruments playing a song, not a unified entity, or
band playing off one another - sterile due to excessive panning, or placement of instruments
in the mix. Some songs (see Nikita) tend to plod along to an
extent, there is a lack of build, or rise & fall, partially the production can be blamed due
to severe lack of dynamic range. At times the album calls back Porcupine Tree (Birthwork),
Devin's Ocean Machine (Smile), sometimes Tool (Rehab is a blatant tool worship song), and
even at times bringing a post grunge feel.
Vocalist Eric Severinson does an admirable job, crooning, screaming (thought
strained to hit the high screams) & harmonizing his way throughout. The instrumentation is
adequate, clearly everyone here is capable, however it trends into often being rather
indistinct at it's worst, see Smile with some plodding, very lacklustre riffs. I will say
however The album wins the award for the most
audible bass guitar I've practically ever heard on an album.

It's a really bad homage to bands of yesteryear who formed part of their influence. None of
them have the talent to really pull off the style, and it comes across incredibly wafer thin,
like a neutered sound overall. The variations are very hokey, contrasted to bands who pull it
off with ease, this is radio rock with prog tack ons. Sensationally accurate lyrics "Pieces
of the Puzzle fit but I don't think I'm getting it", if they only took this to heart with
their songwriting.

Cavalera Conspiracy Pandemonium
This one was god awful, Max isn't recognizable at all, sounds like a different vocalist, the
production overall is shocking, one of the worst I've ever heard on a metal album. Especially
shown up on good speakers or headphones (I'm using KEF LS50 Speakers & an Audeze LCD3 /
Sennheiser HD800S for reference). The snares sound lifelessly flat, at times the drums sound
like they're off in a hallway 5-10 meters away, while the cymbals are fuzzy tissssss sibilant
fizzy splashing, not recognizable as a cymbal at all. The riffs are ultra over compressed,
and even the attempt to pan things in the soundstage fails as it's just so compressed & tight
in. Overally theres a harsh "glass smashing" like quality to the mix. Musically it's
repetitive as hell, some of the most dull riffs of Cavalera's career. It's honestly hard to
finish. Skip all the tracks & only listen to Insurrection, that one is more akin to early
Cavalera Conspiracy with some wicked solos, better yet, go listen to Ritual or Dark Ages by
Soulfly for a modern Cavalera fix.

Cold Chisel Breakfast at Sweethearts
Sophomore slump hits hard. Boring as hell, basic 12 bar blues, rock n roll & 60s rock
tropes coming around here, while the annoying version of Jimmy Barnes finally appears,
with his grit & annoyingly shrill vocal tonality. Gone are the grooves, the more complex
instrumentation & arrangements, and the more widespread textural qualities. Only Showtime
harkens back to this quality, easily the best song here. Ironic lyric of showtime

"Showtime

Try to catch the spark

That got me hooked so many years ago and died.

Second-rate musicians

Feeding infantile illusions

Reading music magazines to keep the habit satisfied

Pitching, To some demographic average"

Sounds like the process of making most of this record. Playing music that's been dumbed
down,
and rolled back by 10 years, to appeal to the drunken, brain-dead 1979 pub crowd.

Also the version available on streaming, the 2011 remaster, sounds brickwalled as hell,
very congested / clumped up instrumentally, it's a poor quality production job. No clue
what the original sounded like.
Cold Chisel The Last Wave of Summer
Rather symbolic of why they never had any success in the US, they create rock music that has been done so many times, done better and by better musicians. Unsurprising that reuniting after so long, comes with a decline in song writing quality, and a passionless sound. Alongside Barnes sounding like a cat strangled after various mishaps with losing his voice, vocal chord damage and excessive drinking.

First 3 songs are passable, All Shall Perish style deathcore, just not quite as good as they usually are. Then this really tanks off in quality, the cleans are atrociously bad, the harsh vocals are so monotonous, add the repetitive nature of the riffs, and the overall length of this record, and it gets fatiguing. The production is very brittle as well sucking a lot of energy out of this. Had they cut most songs to 2-3 minutes, removed all the cleans, and had better production, they might have had a 3/5 album on their hands in a different style. Deathcore has a lot better to offer. Sad to see them fall so far from grace, at least they rebounded somewhat.

Vocally he's laughable, his screams are some of the most piss poor incoherent & weak I've heard in the genre. His cleans are reasonably passable at times, at others times insufferably mopey. The way this is produced leaves the vocals laden with bizarre effects & positioning in the overall soundscape as noted via LCD3, HD800 or LS50. Production is neutered, lacks any sense of levity & dimension. Guitars buzz along, very limp. Bass & the drumming are the best part of this band. Take the groove in If Only She Knew, a song with a Drive Like Jehu bass line, that had potential till the absolute gutter trash vocals completely destroy any semblance of enjoyment.

Reminds me modern Annihilator, which is not where a band wants to be. Lame lyrics, with extremely pseudo tough guy posturing. Extremely lousy riffs, backed by poor wafer thin production, plus that clacky drum sound, just sucks the energy out of this. Doesn't even sound like KK & Glenn, solos sound like Slayer rejects. Vocally Tim Ripper Owens is pretty good honestly, has a great range, and clearly knows his shit, but chooses the most lame delivery imaginable, skill =/= the ability to make good choices when it comes to writing. The issue here is really his low register vocals, often like a poor mans King Diamond, compare to Halfords lower range & it's chalk and cheese. Take Brain Dead, those vocal effects just bring a dingy grot over the track that drones rather than grooves like they hope. I get the impression that they were dead sure they wanted this album to be "theatrical" more than any had been for Judas before. Unsure why they just didn't go for painkiller 2.0 with him doing his best to copy Halford, would have been okay enough & probably begrudgingly would have been accepted.

Last In Line Heavy Crown
So Dios band members set about recording the last album is they were working on while he was still with us. Then decided to continue to make music beyond that. Either way it's got issues just like most Dio records, being that the guitar, riffs, drums and such play to a generic & very forgettable hard rock / basic heavy metal styling. Everything here sounds like it's been done better before a million times. The production certainly doesn't help, carrying a fake and overpolished nature that sucks any authenticity out of this. Vocally this also falls pretty short, just on its own you could say that his voice is just okay, limited in range & pretty mediocre in timbre & tone. Having someone like Dio was always important to carry this type of music because it is just often so wholely boring on its own. Part of that issue is the pacing barely breaking a canter, especially notable in Already Dead, more than 45 seconds dedicated to a plodding riff with a weak vocal line repeating the 'Im already dead' line over and over. By that point any credibility this album has was certainly already dead.

Linkin Park Minutes to Midnight
Completely irrespective of their previous works, or the name attached to this, just an incredibly mediocre alternative rock album. A lot of the time it feels like there is a severe lack of identity, a lot of the time it's U2-lite on display. Change seemed inevitable after two quite similar albums, but becoming a pale imitation of someone else just isn't it.

Pantera Metal Magic
Being objective, regardless of any other factors on this record, Dimebag (at the time
Diamond) Darrell puts on a pretty impressive shred display, wearing very heavy Randy Rhoads
influence. I feel he sounds close to UFO Era Michael Schenker personally, but Schenker was a
Rhoads influence too. The overall quality of the music is very low however, Terry Glaze has a
very weak voice, neither does he have any real range, nor does he have power. rThis is the
very bottom of the barrel of glam metal. Biggest Part of Me sounds as if Ratt had sent their
most horrible reject out to pasture & Pantera picked it up. The first few songs elicit laughs
when Terry weakly cries "guitar!" before each solos, yes Terry, we know, you're not needed
here. The synths are both outdated today, but even for the era, the production is so wafer
thing, and the keys so poor that they destroy any dimension they were meant to add. There are
tiny Glimpses of quality, like the rapid fire riff in Metal Magic, but when you combine it
with incredibly laughable vocal performance you can't give it anything but derision. That
could be a Dokken song with a bit of polish.rLyrics are as expected, drivel. The less said
about the predatory vibe of Tell Me You Want It the better. Or the lyric "I'll be your back
door lover" Only reason I won't give it a 1 is that there are worse out there, and the solos
are good. Also is Sad Lover just a literal rip off of Van Halen? Sounds like a slightly
changed, but copy from Running with the Devil. Will admit, this song is probably the best
song on the record & has a concise overall song structure, the bass & drums carrying a very
Dairy of a Madman / Blizzard of Oz type of bounce to them.
Pantera Projects in the Jungle
If it wasn't for Terry Glaze & his absolutely
insufferable vocal performance this could pass as a purely mediocre glam metal release.
Guitar here is a step up from metal magic, Dimebag puts
together a very George Lynch esque performance, and I could be fooled into believing this
were B-sides rejected from Dokken during their hayday. Ultimately what would be an
acceptable, albeit forgettable & mediocre glam metal album is weighed down by those vocals,
which are uhh perhaps the worst I've ever heard in the genre. I feel like he is singing
beyond his natural range, by a substantial amount. Lyrically this is pure cheese. Heavy Metal
Rules is basically lifted as a song straight from Scorpions or perhaps Accept, sounds like a
ripoff of Balls to the Wall or even Rock You Like a Hurricane. Compare Terry to both Udo
Dirkschneider or Klaus Meine and you'll see how these songs could have been a lot better with
a vocalist with just that bit more control & grunt rather than what sounds like a choirboy
trying his best to not to show his coindexter nature through.

Everyone should at least check out Dimebags shameless Eruption rip off 'Blue Lite Turnin'
Red', the tones he achieves are quite spectacular. Ignoring the continuation, if Dime was
asked to replace the recently deceased Randy Rhoads, it would have been a delightful fit, no
knock on Jake E Lee who is very talented too.
Pantera I Am the Night
What I said for Projects in the Jungle holds true, but I'm sorry, vocally it's so bad I can't get through a single track without laughing my head off. Listen to the opener and try to get through the vocals at 3:08 without losing it. It's like a drunk larrikin trying his hand at singing like Brian Johnson when they don't have the range, or the voice of a sesame street muppet. Whatever good will Dimebags dope, ripping solos, middle of the road riffs gives, it's totally torn up by Terry's absolutely comedy inducing vocal effort, the wafer thin production certainly doesn't help. The lyrics are equally comical, somehow you just have to admire grown ass men thinking this stuff was solid stuff.

I enjoyed the debut for the most part, it's heaviness and chunky sludge plus some doom in moments. This by contrast comes across too punk influenced which doesn't quite work for it. It's far too repetitive, sadly the production is dogshit too, so it's murky, hollowed out, with a crackly tinny quality. Robs the music of heft, and his vocals sound like he's yelling at the back of a room, just has no immediacy despite "heaviness, anger and pace", really weak effort. You can tell compared to their first that the passion just wasn't there in the same way. Destruction of a Person is pretty cool however.
Texas in July One Reality
The drums have been really pulled back in bombast here, where the hell is the amazing fills, rrobust cymbal work of the previous one. Can these dudes stop soloing, their scale use is rsecond rate. Part of the issue is a really lousy kind of muddy production as the energy of rthe treble / upper & lower bass are cut heavily off, a very narrow compressed cardboard rproduction. They've gotten really into using chords through the verses, and the production rleaves these very wafer thin & lifeless. This makes it a sound just devoid of energy & any rkind of passion in a way. It's listenable in the sense it's utterly forgettable, but christ ris this boring.

Semi-Okayish at best, horrifically cringeworthy at worst, generic nu-metalcore. Heavy
influences that have trickled down over time from Bring Me The Horizon to many bands in this
style. There is better out there, Desolate for example, who ride the style with a much more
ferocious & impactful style. This is nothing new, the autotune on the cleans is quite
irritating to be frank. For the most part generic across the board, riffs you've heard done
better, cleans with light autotune, glacial pacing & attempts at emotional refrain. At times
laughably over wrought at how standard it all is, always trending towards some of the genres
most done to death cliches. The chuga-a-chuga breakdowns followed by "atmospheric" electronic
haze could not be more trite. A lesser Northlane or inferior In Hearts Wake. The boxy / kind
of piss weak mid heavy production does not assist despite decent spatial aptitude, electronic
elements lack the bass presence to carry their full spectrum across. My contagion is one of
the worst tracks I've heard in the genre, it'd be welcome on Bullet for My Valentines Temper
Temper if it weren't for the electronic elements. Let Me Out is a decent track.

Absolutely boredom inducing. Not even an average rock record, just a straight up slog to get
through. Scott's vocals very much sound like someone past it, or a complete has been who has
that "I still got it, let me get up there & show you" type of vibe, but it ain't it, not too
dissimilar to the absolutely mid AF comeback record by Extreme. Sometimes old dudes needed to
give it up when they have no ideas except for basic strummy guitar lines and "oo woo hoo oo
woo hoo" as a vocal line. Headspace was the only track I could dig, maybe as it was closer to
the sound of STP rather than the tired & had it rock musings slash usually indulges in. At
least in his own band Myles Kennedy;s vocal ability can carry his useless ass.
Velvet Revolver Libertad
Viking Crown Banished Rhythmic Hate
Some weird mixes of styles going on here. Symphonic elements are somewhat akin to Paysage D'hiver, the actual black metal stuff isn't like that though, sounding more like the sound of an underground show going on as you walk up the stairs in a dive bar, you know how it sounds from outside? It's really hard to hear what is going on even with a good 2 channel system. Shame because moments like the stomping, brutal riffs in Contemplating the Pitch Black show some quality. Accepting the Rise of Satanism is like a lo-fi demented version of a bad Future Sound of London track (how many black metal fans know that reference?)
Viking Crown Innocence From Hell
Very blase in conception, execution, and delivery. Don't mind the song The Seventh Storm of the Blood Demon. No surprise with the most groove riff Phil delivers something of a solid performance before a bombastic blast beat ending.
Waterparks Intellectual Property
Funeral Grey & a number of these tracks sound like songs pop artists have rejected
& then been tossed through a vague "pretentious fake scene kid" filter. If Ritual was

I have tried twice to listen to this without stopping, I can't because I end up laughing my ass off at the absolute banality of it. Gang chant choruses, horrifying lyrics, close to the most offensively bad metalcore can get. It's a parody of the style nearly, pure schlock lyrics, mediocre riffs & just a piss poor slab of music.
Celtic Frost Cold Lake
Chris Cornell Scream
Deathchain Cult of Death
This isn't 8 tracks, more like one 43 & a half minute song, because every
single track on this record sounds practically the same, with some very rudimentary
variation. Incredibly disappointing given their first two records were so varied, with very
few riffs being cycled too many times. The riffs here are quite simple, and frankly just do
not carry any real energy due to the oddly smooth, flat, and overly polished almost
"plasticky" production. Ridiculously boring, it was a struggle to sit through the whole album
and that was while I was gaming at the same time.

Scorpions Moment of Glory
So this is essentially a reworking of a lot of their old material with orchestra, akin to a
scorpions version of S&M (Metallica). Though it's incredibly awkward, cheesy & doesn't carry
off as a contribution to the music, the songs start and stop awkwardly to allow the orchestra
to essentially extend the songs between the more regular & now overlaid parts of the album.
One huge glaring flaw here is that there is a huge difference between hard rock & thrash in
the weight it carries alongside those instrumentations. So while it works for Metallica, and
more notably for bands like Blind Guardian (Power Metal) or Devin Townsend (Ocean Machine
Live), it falls flat due to the simplicity & sheer overpowering prescence the strings have
compared to the rather threadbare Scorpions style. Symphony needs to be recorded with a lot
of dynamic range & this album is horrifically brickwalled so every big swell of a choir,
violins & drums is as loud as every "quiet moment", it's not long before it's quite
fatiguing. Also a beautiful lamenting song like Send Me An Angel should not be portrayed with
bombastic, heroic almost "warriors going to battle" introductions - which sound surprisingly
like Welcome Home Sanitarium (As Covered by the Scorched Earth Orchestra). Whoever decided to
let Zucchero sing on this needs to be shot, due doesn't fit.
Suicide Silence Suicide Silence
Sounds like they discovered the music of Deftones & Glassjaw, but without the talent, or understanding of what made such music so great, they created an abomination. Murky soundscapes, with screams that are just "there" devoid of anger, passion or even any real tactility, singing like a shower singer version of Steven Wilson at times "Conformity" (ironic given how generic the band have been, basically a metronome of mediocre deathcore) other times completely lost in the attempt at a Chino Moreno impression, gone awry like a bad american idol audition.
