this has been a long time coming-- in 2020 i heard green eyes on the radio and have had a
note in my phone that said "green eyes - arlo parks" for two years now. the conclusion i
have come to after listening to this whole album is that for two years ive been missing out,
i should've listened to this much sooner. wild that this is a debut, i can't wait for more
from her. there were some parts which felt a bit repetitive, like a few songs that felt very
similar (hurt and hope, although great songs on their own and very individual, are an
example). that was completely mitigated by the fact that there were multiple times listening
to this album that i got chills-- parks' beautiful vocals and intricate songwriting were
very affecting. really amazing album!! |

| this is a hard album to rate. the lyrics were very impactful and did make me tear up a few different times, but the instrumentation felt really theatrical at times (by which i mean some songs felt like they would have fit perfectly into, like, dear evan hansen). definitely had some highlights and some lowlights but overall felt a little generic at points. |

| i personally think laurel hell presents a lot-- 'that's our lamp' felt like a fun and interesting direction, 'everyone' has some amazing lyrics, 'love me more' feels simultaneously brutally honest while sonically suppressing itself-- but it def feels thin compared to her other albums (be the cowboy, puberty 2, and bury me at makeout creek in particular). |
