Denki Groove 662 BPM By DG |
Seminal album by the Japanese cult classic duo, legends Takkyu Ishino and Pierre Taki collaborate to perform energetic and varied hip-house/hi-NRG. Released on the label SSE Communications at the sunrise of the 1990s, "662 BPM By DG" paints an amusing picture of Japanese Gen X youth. Bright synths, toyetic drum machine merriment, synthetic slap bass, and goofy samples of virtually every 20th century pop culture artifact I can think of. Hilarious, puts a smile on my face and forces repeated listens. Standout tracks include "Denki Biribiri", "Joe" and the 11-minute-long epic "D-E-P". |

Riow Arai Mind Edit |
Arai's most impressive early work. The production techniques are a lot more intricate and complex than its predecessors; the precisely-sloppy manipulations of any given instrumental hip-hop style are emphasized ten-fold and harnessed into the glitchiest of Arai's repertoire (at least as of my listening). Especially on "Undulation", Arai completely enters the realm of IDM with his precise choices of cuts, edits, and DSP. It becomes quite obvious what is intended by the record's title Mind Edit. Most every other track implements similar disfigurement to structure, but with more approachable breakbeat presentation, teetering between the biblically turntablist and the underground experimental. "Gyrate" and "Trillion" handle this the best, serving the finest of Arai's bridge between the norm and unprecedented. The only weak moments on the album are the track "Disturbance" which doesn't find its footing till the last few minutes; and the pace-disrupting interlude "Inter" which follows track 1's "Intro" and track 2's "Undulation", putting an unpleasant divide between track 2 and the others, only amplifying their stylistic differences. Overall, this releases represents the best of Arai's early catalogue, offering the matured musicianship and reference to Japan's historical music pantheon (jazz, avant-garde) of Circuit '72 at the returned benefit of Again's grit, space, and unconcern for convention. |

Denki Groove Flash Papa |
Denki Groove UFO |
Denki Groove is the beloved Japanese cult classic duo consisting of Takkyu Ishino and Pierre Taki. Together they make the goofiest, most amusing, infectuously danceable hip-house-adjacent music one could ask for. Flash Papa is their sophomore album and--while not quite as spectacular as their debut--is sure to inspire ear-to-ear smiling and beguilement. On tracks like the audaciously, borderline satrically Miami bass cut "Miami Paradise" and the cybernetic Fraggle-anthem of "Cafe De Oni," Denki Groove demonstrate their unique take on all things dance music. If you have yet to experience Denki Groove, their debut is an excellent start, and after rinsing that release enough times, dive into this one and prepare for a non-stop pleasant experience. The album is perfectly executed goofy fun that actually benefits from its moments of datedness and, despite offering an almost childlike sense of whimsy, cannot be ignored for its expert musicianship nonetheless. |

First half is some very compelling vocal-driven glitch hop, best done when said vocals are chopped to oblivion but still a quality listen when handled as straightforward MC'ing. Second half verges deeper into broad IDM territory with longer ambient sections, less hip-hop percussion, and nuanced glitches pretty much unrecognizable from the pseudo-turntablist techniques of the first half. "Wednesday Afternoon" is basically a post-rock song; it's sort of out of place yet somehow works well during this second half. The edits on "Professor Glick" would spin a diehard AFX-drone's dome like a dreidel. Other majorly standout tracks are "Mofpex," "Oh How Shmee Loves DSP," and "Hoax". |
