Tricot Jodeki
Tricot leans uncomfortably close to midtempo, but they're far better instrumentalists than most so the riffs and fills are still top notch... though their recent obsession with triggered (and gated) drums takes off a bit of their edge. Interesting too how Ikkyu wrote two songs basically solo, with no credit for the rest of the band. Anyway, not their best work, but a good work nonetheless.

It made for an awkward listen at first spin---bad production, worse vocal takes---but it did prefigure everything that were to occupy the young band's interest in the (brilliant) near future (for future): angular post-punk with spidery lead guitars that indulges in both traditional melodicism and futuristic forays into the fringes of tonal consonance, and lyrics that tried to touch on the deeper aspects of love and sex (which achieved its intended goal successfully, unfortunately, only on their albums that are released after 1990). Not their best pre-90's album, but it's a pretty decent one.

3.4 the first Johnny Marr record that I actually enjoy. But yeah, gone are all the "genre"-
bending, classic-rock-pastiched post-punk he's known for, and the newer styles he's employing here
aren't particularly great---midtempo, new-wave-y pop songs with rudimentary riffing, crap lyrics--
-but the vocal melodies are catchy enough.

String and brass arrangement sounds a bit like the poppy fusion jazz thing going on with David Sylvian in the mid-80s, Jonny's playing more guitar, which is always good, the "angry" lyrics are cringe. Wish it could've been more uptempo.

BUCK-TICK ABRACADABRA
Featuring boring guitar tones, even more boring guitar playing, bad lyrics, and their most uninspired songwriting ever (the person over on Blog Tick said 'Eureka' sounded like if Buck-Tick covered M83 and described 'Datenshi' as a 'punch-packing minimal electro dance punk' which couldn't have been more wrong) Buck-Tick's latest is truly a massive disappointment.
