most of my high rating is for the suite of songs at the end of the album. stunning stuff
Masada Live in Sevilla 2000
this is my first real introduction to Zorn. i had heard a song here and there, i think, but no
album all the way through. this is excellent, much more accessible than i had been expecting.
sure, there's some sqwonking and some squealing, but it never felt like, say, Coltrane's
"Interstellar Space" in its abstractness. The sqwonk and squeal feel less like confrontation than
*texture* for the overall composition. you can feel the melody even if you can't pick it out and
hold the whole thing in your head. plus, i mean, how good is Joey Baron? just the bee's knees.
This is just great stuff and I can't wait to dive into more of Zorn's massive, but not unwieldy
discography.

Richard and Linda Thompson I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight
mostly i was surprised by how modern the musicianship and production sounds. the vocals definitely recall their era (and the certainly some of the lyrics) but Richard's guitar work is just a blast from the future.

...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead Worlds Apart
A Perfect Circle Thirteenth Step
A Sunny Day in Glasgow Ashes Grammar
i think it might fare better if one treats this as a continuous experience rather than as a collection of discrete songs. very ethereal, very Cocteau, but also synth-y with sometimes a four-on-the-floor beat
Adele 21
Alison's Halo Eyedazzler 1992-1996
this was great. found it by user Keyblade's Ethereal Dreamgaze list, which has some other great gems on it. Thanks, Keyblade!
Beyonce Lemonade
Black Death Black Death
Black Sabbath Mob Rules
Blue Cheer Vincebus Eruptum
Bronski Beat The Age of Consent
"Smalltown Boy" is perhaps one of the best pop singles of all time and a gay anthem. the rest of the album has its pleasures ("Why?", "Ain't Necessarily So") but it's not quite to the same standard as that one single.
Bruce Cockburn Stealing Fire
"Lovers" is, for me, a Top 20 song of all time. If lyrics could bring me to tears, this would be the one to do it. Most of the songs here are fantastic, with some worldbeat-infused arrangement and Cockburn's lyrics. A couple songs are a bit embarrassing in their earnestness and directness ("Yanqui", "Nicaragua") which brings down my score, unfortunately.

Coldplay Parachutes
Corrosion of Conformity In the Arms of God

Fleurety Min Tid Skal Komme
Floating Points Crush
Florist Emily Alone
Foo Fighters The Colour and the Shape
Foo Fighters There Is Nothing Left to Lose
Frankie Goes To Hollywood Welcome to the Pleasuredome
The major problem here is that too many of the songs are incomplete sketches. You desperately want the songs shaped a little bit more. The opening to "Two Tribes" is absolutely killer but then the rest of the song goes nowhere. Which is tragic. Especially since when they did write a whole song, it's tremendous. "Welcome to the Pleasuredome" is probably my fav 80s banger. Just 13 minutes of pure perfection.

Indigo Girls Indigo Girls
Iron And Wine Our Endless Numbered Days
Iron And Wine Kiss Each Other Clean
Jimmy Somerville Homage
pure, pure disco. the companion album, Club Homage, features some mixed bag remixes, but blessedly, the extended versions of 6 of these tracks. immaculate stuff. real horns, real percussion, and Jimmy's soaring falsetto. i wish this album had been 8 tracks instead of 12 and all 8 had been the extended versions.
John Coltrane Concert in Japan
It's hard to focus on the big picture with Coltrane, I find. It's easier to focus just on a few minutes at a time because, often, so much is happening. This was great, especially the 45 minute long Meditations (and its incredible 10 minute long drum solo). But I didn't love it because I couldn't step back and see a cohesive structure to it, the way you can with other jazz.
John Zorn Xu Feng: John Zorn's Game Pieces Volume 1
absolutely wild shit. truly a madman's album. the drumming is predictably phenomenal thanks to the dude from Slayer. at one point, somebody makes his instrument sound like a ringing telephone from the 90s. completely out there

Silent Running Shades of Liberty
Stumbled across this album about a decade ago, during the heyday of the .rar blogs. Listened to hours and hours of synthpop and post-punk and whatnot and one of the many albums that stood out was this one. It's not some lost gem in dire need of recovery, but it's above average 80s synthpop. Lots of 80s-style guitar and deep sounding drums and the singer sings in that accent that was so popular in the 80s. The album has never been released on CD, as far as I'm aware, despite being distributed by EMI back in the day. You'd think in this era of endless reissues, they'd haul this one out of the vaults and onto disc. Definitely worth a listen if you like 80s synthpop. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-d4qvvopyI
