Okay, holy shit. This is basically the only modern dissonant death metal album I've heard that can compete with the likes of Gorguts and Ulcerate, this is absolutely phenomenal, twisting, technical death metal with close to flawless execution and wonderful sound production.

I'm very close to giving this album a 4.5. The problem is when an album is just one really long guitar solo, it starts to lack diversity and balance. I need more melody. When comparing this album to bands like Eternity's End, Obscura, or hell, even Archspire, this is very lacking in musical breaks and interludes to let you unpack the onslaught of wankery.rIt additionally needs hooks and well-written solos to complement the sheer speed and technicality of the performances. To elaborate, A well-written solo is not identical to a technical solo, even though more technical solos are more difficult to write generally. Obscura is able to pack in a ton of melody and earworms into their incredibly technical composition in a way that First Fragment are just not as experienced at yet making this a somewhat tiring listen to get through in one sitting.

Wow, this is very good Obscura-esque melodic tech death. Honestly, this is much better of an album than it looks to be from judging the book by its cover. I'm glad I gave this a try. That fretless bass, and that melody? Mmmmmm. Very satisfying.

This album is great and definitely an improvement from "The Way Forward", which means the title of the last album was not lying to us. This album is packed full of great riffs and incredibly killer guitar solos. Aaron Marshall may be in the top echelon of guitarists in the genre that has some of the most rigorous guitarists.

This is a very respectable release that exemplifies what traditional progressive metal has to offer. This album takes you on a journey through life and death, space and time, killer riffs and technical instrumental solos. They are able to do all this without getting lost a whirlwind of wankery. Overall, solid release for fans of Opeth, old Dream Theater and Psychotic Waltz with guest instrumentalists from familiar bands such as Haken, Leprous, Caligula's Horse, Thank You Scientist and Fallujah.

I strongly stand behind the artistic message and theme of this album, however, the actual music as a progressive metal album is not the best. It heavily lacks memorable riffs and vocal melodies and one can easily get lost listening to it. Like always the musicianship is in point. Overall though, this is album is less enjoyable to listen to than the first 4 albums.

Any album that is released after a band's most critically acclaimed work is almost bound to disappoint people. But why is this? It is because people let their contingent perception of what they think an album should be, unrealistically high, and impossibly appeasable expectations take away from their experience of an otherwise solid release. This happens time and time again. And in my opinion, people need to learn to judge albums based on what they are, not on what our subjective expectations dictate.rBut how is The Work? The Work is definitely a step in a different direction than WOKMN, they focus more on minimalism, atmospheric guitar textures, and progressive rock interludes. This is not new for the band, but the band is taking these elements to wider extremes. Which is something that can be applauded. This exceeds the standards of your average progressive technical death metal album, and shows that the band is still growing, and changing up their sound in a way that doesn't betray their core style. People in other soundoffs are saying "It's bad, it's boring.", but music can almost never force you to like it if you don't want to. I think people should give this more of a chance.

Disturbed Indestructible
Now, I'm an avid progressive metal fan and have been for the last 7 years. However, my metal journey started with humble beginnings: Korn, Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Helloween, Evanescence, Pantera, and In Flames were what I spent the majority of my time listening to. I especially liked Disturbed, particularly their golden era: Ten Thousand Fists through Lost Children are all incredibly solid. rTheir songwriting may be predictable and not super technical. But boy, do they know how to write catchy choruses and lead guitar melodies to contrast with their angsty demeanor and dark themes. They have their hits like "Inside the Fire" and "The night" but some of my favorites are Deceiver, The Curse, Criminal, and Torn.

I'm not sure what Darrrk0 is talking about, this band does indeed have influences of Opeth, BTBAM, Haken, Devin Townsend, etc., but what they are missing is a semblance of some originality and synthesis. This album does not bring forth anything new to the genre and reuses old tropes that are outdated by about 10 years.

Usually fairly well-developed progressive power metal, but it is ungodly long. The length can make the experience drag on as it doesn't change styles up very often. But there are a few real bangers on this album.

This is very pleasant instrumental progressive metal / post rock with great musical fundamentals. I wish I could give this a higher score but it is really too simple and too short.

From the standpoint of technical musicianship, this album is pretty much an 8/10 or higher. However, the songwriting here, while melodic and fun to listen to, is a bit samey. If we could get more variety on the aesthetic and soundscape-front, as well as on the song structure / song length front, this artist has a lot more potential.

Update: If you are an active (rather than passive) listener, this album is a slog to get through.

I am not one to reward plagiarism. Opeth is also one of my favorite bands, if not my favorite, however, the extent to which they just copy actual riffs and compositions (aside from the general style they exclude) from Opeth is gratuitous.

This album was really nice. I very much got into the longer jam sessions and I thought the vocals and overall eerie ambiance is well done. This is on the border of a 3 and a 3.5 for me but I've rated a couple of better albums a 3, so this one is subsequently a very good 3/5.

I thought this album was pretty generic for progressive metal standards. It has a tight production and very clean vocals and instrumentals but I think it compositionally has too many 2010's prog tropes to be considered really "unique" and innovative. However, I did like a lot of the guitar solos on this album, I just wished the album, in general, sounded more defined.
