The rhythm section alone I could listen to without any other elements. Danny Carey in my opinion is the greatest rock drummer of all time and this album did not make me rethink that. Of course like other projects from Tool you need to give it a few listens and a bit of time. Hopefully others will do that before giving it a harsh review. EDIT: I had to go back and remove a lot of my criticisms. You have to listen to this album at least three times before you start to understand how to approach it. It is long form and you have to look at it more like a Yob or ISIS album. This is definitely their most epic music to date. TOOL's mastery of timing and unorthodox song structure is mind bending. This record morphs after each listen until you understand the complete magnitude of what has been accomplished. This album on first glance seems boring and uninspired but the more you retrain your mind on how to listen the more you realize that is the furthest thing from what this album is. It absolutely rips and i'm surprised its not getting more recognition. Sort of reminds me of Nails meets Entombed. Very awesome stuff. They may have left them this way because this is where they were in the writing process while caleb was alive. However, musically speaking this album is underwhelming. However, for FlyLo its fairly poor. The whole thing could be boiled down to a handful of decent tracks. Closer to motifs then actual songs. If someone had shown me some of these tracks and not told me if was flying lotus i'd think it was some random no name EDM guy. I'm a big fan of his but this album is off the mark. Maybe needs to put the pipe down. Like someone else had mentioned it takes about 12 tracks before this thing really gets going. He is confused in trying to rebrand. He built his name off of technical and particularly vicious lyrical themes. Now he has turned to this sort of confused pseudo black panther. I have no problem with him going that route its just that the message is pretty unclear. He is very double minded and the points he's making come off as petty at best. His best moments are mostly on mixtapes, out of the bloated 22 tracks only 2 are going to make it to my playlist.
