Ben Howard Collections from the Whiteout
Ben is not getting weirder and weirder like others have said here, this album doesn't come anywhere close to matching the level of composition that went into IFWWW or Noonday Dream, it is very simple harmonically. There are some solid stand alone songs on this album but the cohesiveness of his previous two efforts made you get lost in their world. The level of repetitiveness on this thing makes it a bit dull to listen to the whole way through. Random drum-machine beats with guitar lines buried in the mix that are nothing reminiscent of Ben at his most virtuosic. The best thing to come out of this album cycle so far was his variation of Far Out on YouTube, but even then it pales in comparison to anything on IFWWW or Noonday. Edit: inevitably grown on me a little in terms of having a number of take-away singles, but as a cohesive unit it still doesn't work.

3.0 good
Ben Howard Is It?
A few standout tracks that are reminiscent of the drum machine + delay/reverb drenched guitar that worked on collections. Days of Lantana, Walking Backwards, Richmond Avenue, Spirit and Little Plant being the standout tracks. Couldn?t Make It Up is the weakest Ben Howard song of all-time, super cheesy diatonic chord progressions and the section that is identical to Africa by Toto? not a fan. The tracks on this album would be better served with just Ben playing his Jazzmaster over a drum machine like he did in his intimate solo shows post collections.
