A beautiful and uneasy album of distortions. From the detuned strings in "Performance" to the warbling theremin in "Test Me" and even the chrome artwork which distorts the light and images around it, this is a haunting and beautiful work that brings out the best of the band. Jamie xx's production shines, especially in the sample-based songs. "Lips" is an obvious standout, sounding like a tropical-house version of the Bangles. If anything, this is music to be felt rather than analyzed. Pure magic.

This album is so much fun. Mars is clearly trying to replicate the success of Uptown Funk, but nothing here seems clearly derivative of that. Instead, the album is a tight collection of throwback jams pulling from several decades and influences like James Brown and Midnight Star. It's also incredibly funny when Mars tries to act like a sex god (i.e., "Versace on the Floor"). Overall, pretty solid album.

Kendrick Lamar DAMN.
Despite a lack of the cinematic vision that made TPAB so great, this is still a worthy addition to the K-Dot canon. The relative lack of guest features helps put the spotlight on Kendrick and makes the album more personal. There's also a wonderful fusion of styles ranging from current trends (the trap-pop of "LOYALTY." and "LOVE.") back to more old-school styles displayed in "HUMBLE." and "DUCKWORTH." This is definitely Kendrick's most conventional release, but it's so well-crafted that it stacks up pretty closely with his previous work.

Jesca Hoop Memories Are Now
Inspired but wildly unfocused. Tracks like "Animal Kingdom Chaotic" and "Pegasi" are fantastic on their own but fail to help the record materialize into anything more than a collection of disparate moments.
Joey Badass ALL-AMERIKKKAN BADA$$
This was really great until he started talking about chemtrails and government conspiracies lol. Still solid production though, the first half of the record is substantially better than the second half.

Kero Kero Bonito Intro Bonito
Lady Gaga The Fame
Little Dragon Little Dragon
Maggie Rogers Now That The Light Is Fading
A lot of potential here; Color Song and Alaska are both fantastic Sylvan Esso-esque folktronica cuts that really highlight Rogers' voice. On + Off and Dog Years are also impressive tracks that see her transition into more of a pop anthem direction. If anything, this just gets me more hyped for a full album from Rogers.

Thundercat Drunk
Despite being on his third LP, it still feels like Thundercat hasn't quite found his footing. His instrumental work has never been better, but it comes at the price of a weak concept and a clumsy narrative. It's enjoyable fun, though it's obvious that Thundercat is capable of so much more.

bansheebeat Techo Deluxe
Cage The Elephant Cage the Elephant
Coldplay A Head Full of Dreams
Electric Guest Plural
Dear to Me is one of the best pop tracks I've heard in a while. The rest of it is just a Maroon 5-esque summer album (but artsier!), with some quality production despite some frequently uninspired moments. Listen to the singles, ditch the rest.
Father John Misty Pure Comedy

Imagine Dragons Smoke + Mirrors

Little Dragon Season High
Ehhhhhhhhh. I was planning on writing a full review for this but there really isn't anything interesting to say about it. The two singles ("High" and "Sweet") are fantastic career-bests for the band, but pretty much everything else falls flat. Maybe I'm too accustomed to hearing Little Dragon being featured on other albums, but both this and Nabuma felt like overlong snoozefests. Yukimi's voice is as beautiful as ever, but you can only make it through so many generic tracks before you just give up. It's neo-soul without any soul.
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis This Unruly Mess I've Made
mansionz Mansionz
i'm thinking about how "dennis rodman" is way better than any other song on this album
MGMT MGMT
Mika The Origin of Love
One Ok Rock Ambitions
A few bright spots (Jaded and Hard to Love) amidst a bunch of lifeless, unoriginal pop-punk. It's not horrible, but it's far from engaging.
Radiohead A Moon Shaped Pool
Sampha Process
Sampha's voice has never been more powerful and affecting, but I feel like the songwriting and instrumental ends of this project really don't hold up.
The Avalanches Wildflower
The Civil Wars The Civil Wars
The Glitch Mob Love Death Immortality
The M Machine Metropolis - Part 1
The Weeknd Starboy
The very definition of mediocrity. The only genuinely "great" songs are the ones produced by Daft Punk, but even their talent is clearly wasted. Maybe it's because Abel put out 68 minutes of music just one year after BBTM, but most of these tracks are half-baked pop-lite that lack the gravitas of his Trilogy-era work.
WHARFWHIT Evidently

2.0 poor
Animal Collective Meeting of the Waters
Ehhhh. "Man of Oil" is fantastic, but the rest of the collection tends to meander a bit. The songwriting is virtually nonexistent, and it seems like this is less of an EP and more of Avey & Geologist saying "hey, we recorded in the Amazon! hear those bird noises in the background? neat, right?"
Foxygen Hang
Insufferable Broadway-rock that's way too cheesy and maximalist to make any impact. It's clear that a lot of musical talent went into this, but it doesn't translate into an enjoyable listening experience.
Night Riots Love Gloom
Something about this makes me angry. Maybe it's the inclusion of multiple interludes with pretentious Latin titles, or maybe it's that they are trying way too hard to be Depeche Mode. It gets spared from a 1.0 rating just for Contagious, which is the only good song. But the rest of it sounds like a horrible Twilight fanfic.
SOHN Rennen
The M Machine Glare
Such a strange album. It's ambient, it's a new wave throwback, it's a weird comedy about eating worms and masturbating? I admire them going in a new direction but it seems like 50 different directions at once.
