Never even used to be a fan of this genre until I started listening to Obscura and now I can't get

I don't even really love black/death metal that much, but this album just bumps for the entire 48
minutes. Hard to not have a super good time listening through this. It's got dirty hooks, album
showcases some great variation in style, tempo and sound..... and it's melodic af.
The last minute and a half of The Return of a Long Lost Soul absolutely shreds. |

| Directionally, I really like what they were going for here, but the execution on vocals and mixing just doesn't allow this to hold together in any meaningful way. There's some great moments and I often found there were some nice glimpses of bands like Woods of Ypres, but not enough to really get this into one of my annual favorites like their past couple of releases have. |

These guys don't really do much of anything innovative or groundbreaking, but they've been
chugging along for years delivering solid melo-death/metalcore and this is no exception. If you
like HSB, this is them playing as safe as can be, but there's still a lot of melodic riffing and
decent song-writing to enjoy.
Can't help but feel like this release is just leaving me wanting a bit more and wishing they would
experiment outside of their comfort zone a lot more.....the same feeling I've had after listening
to everything these guys put out. |
