5.0 classic
Ben Folds Five Whatever and Ever, Amen
EPMD Unfinished Business
One of the most underrated hip hop albums of all time, period. The lyrics, the beats, the *music* -- everything is right here. Even the bright cover contributes to the experience this album provides. Certainly ahead of its time when you realize it dropped in 1988. Erick Sermon's lisp and smooth delivery perfectly compliment Parrish's more aggressive and lyrical verses. Fantastic sampling provides for the great balance of consistency and variety in the tracks; the album doesn't get old easily, but doesn't change up styles so much that it becomes a mark against it. Strictly Business is fundamentally better album overall, but the style, swagger, and presence that comes with Unfinished Business just can't be beat. A top three album of all time on my list.
Masta Ace Disposable Arts
I already wrote a review thing for DA, but to summarize: Masta Ace masters the concept album, delivering smart lyrics with a sick flow over well produced tracks alongside perfectly placed features. Ace pours his heart out into Disposable Arts, and created what is one of my favorite hip hop projects of all time.
MF DOOM Operation: Doomsday
While maybe not technically DOOM's best record all around, Operation: Doomsday is probably the best blend of what makes Dumile DOOM; there's jazz samples, gritty tracks, smart lyricism, skits from old shows, and well utilized features. MetalFace has an addictive delivery that isn't matched by many other MCs out there, and this record is the rawest of his discography, doing a great job of showing off his flow over gooey beats. My personal favorite DOOM record, and one of my favorite rap records of all time.

EPMD Strictly Business
While I prefer Unfinished Business to the duos first outing, the albums name is fitting; this record is Strictly Business. Erick and Parrish spit gorgeous flows over each and every track, with lyrics to match. The production is cleaner here than any other EPMD record that followed. The group has the fire of a new hip hop group trying to come up, and it shows. Not something I constantly have in the rotation but undeniably great.
Freddie Gibbs and Madlib Pinata
The chemistry that Gibbs and MadLib have on this record is unreal. While Gibbs' other records have him over gritty 2000's type garage rap beats, Pinata unleashes the artist as we've never heard him before, and it sounds phenomenal. Gibbs is able to tell stories about his life, and his delivery meshes so well with the tracks MadLib lays down that you really feel what Freddie is saying, turning each track about a small portion of the gangster rappers day into a part of a story about his life.An overlooked hip hop record of the decade amongst the mainstream. There are a few weak spots here and there, but certainly a classic.
Ghostface Killah Ironman
Hootie and The Blowfish Cracked Rear View
Jay-Z The Black Album
I'm a sucker for records where you can really feel the passion, and The Black Album is no exception. Every lyric laid down on this album has purpose behind it, every track its' meaning. In many ways this feels like the realest we've heard from Jay-Z, and I absolutely can't get enough of it. Damn near a perfect hip hop project in my eyes.

Kendrick Lamar To Pimp a Butterfly
Kero Kero Bonito Time 'n' Place
King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard I'm In Your Mind Fuzz
Definitely my favorite King Gizz album. The band takes a more traditional approach to music on this record, while still sticking to their guns on some of the musical techniques they use, such as the seamless transitions between many of the tracks, making some parts of the album feel more like on long performance rather than a collection of songs. KGATLW is able to deliver not only some of their greatest rock jams, but also slow jams, on this one album. I love tracks like I'm in your mind for their air-guitar appeal, while both of the Slow Jam tracks are perfectly crafted songs that fit their namesake. Overall, one of my favorite albums of all time, and a blanket recommendation for those looking to get into the Aussie rockers.

Travis Scott Days Before Rodeo
One of the greatest mixtapes of our time. DBR has Travis talking about the normal parts of his life before he was big (makes sense, seeing as this tape is what really got him big). Classic track after classic track is laid down, with sick production and well utilized features. Travis Scott is generally not for everyone, but it's tough to deny that this tape is a landmark in hip hop, and a big part of its modern mainstream appeal.

Logic The Incredible True Story
Over time, this album has really changed in my eyes (or maybe to my ears...). The production style complements Logic well, and there's a certain crisp and genuine quality in his delivery that makes this album feel somehow more real than his non-concept albums. Logic is trying much harder here to be a great artist, rather than a great rapper, and I dig it. I still don't love it, but it's better than many give it credit for.

Sam Cooper Gleamer
As a song, Gleamer is, to me, FANTASTIC -- a summer anthem defined. However, while I do enjoy 12345jewel12345, it and Loving don't do it for me the same way Gleamer does. On it's own as a track, Gleamer is probably a 4 for me, but the other two songs leave me rating the EP at a 3. I'd like to see where the artist goes in the future.

Hobo Johnson The Rise of Hobo Johnson
I actually truly enjoy many of Hobo Johnsons live performances, but find this recorded music to lose a lot of the charm that he brings. That, mixed with his confused identity as an artist (is he a rapper? an indie sad boy? idk) leaves this record feeling crappy and unprofessional all around, lacking the enjoyability the live performances have.

Raury The Woods
The Woods has some of my all time favorite songs on it, but fails as an album due to its' unholy length that goes toe to toe with a kids movie, and its' staggering track list of 22 songs. Had this been the 11 best songs, it would stand up much better as a cohesive and engaging album. However, the lack of cohesion and absurd length force me to keep my review where it is. Listening to this album as a whole is a drag that isn't worth your time, but a playlist of the 5-10 standout songs could be your project of the year. I respect the artistic vision, but the length simply has a negative effect on me.
