ABBA The Album
American Football American Football
The Best Emo album of all time. Mike Kinsella plays the role of a workman translating complex rhythmic patterns into beautiful cathartic series of arpeggios without losing the charm of pop music. American Football's debut and only LP contains 9 amazing and overly-sincere songs that almost anyone can relate with, and they evocate every single memory you're trying to hide, maybe even in your subconscious, no matter how deep they are buried. "Never Meant" and "Honestly" are the highlights of this record. Two heartwarming songs with beautiful band playing and intense riff delivering. It is recommended to give repeated listens to the album. It may not click at the first one.

Is this the best album ever by a solo woman? I guess you could say so. It's Joni's best album for sure.

Neutral Milk Hotel In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
This album is an extremelly enduring experience. It's amazing how Mangum's songwriting got better
this fast. In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, as an album, as a cohesive unity, is one of the most
trascendental pieces of music ever written. From small detailed images to disgusting sick
pictures, Mangum's poetry hits the right buttons always at the right times. He's always singing in
the presence of original instrumental arrangements, brasses, distorted guitars, trumpets,
accordions, synths, and more. These 11 songs are everything folk music has ever aspired to be,
intuitive, simple, gorgeous, moving, inspiring and confrontative. An all time classic and a must
listen for everyone who still doesn't understand what the big fuss is all about. (By the way, all
the people who believe this is the best album of all times have a clue. Having a clue doesn't mean
they're right. It means they have a good point). (Also: Having a good point is more important than
being right).

Radiohead OK Computer
This is the best album of all times, of course. If you seriously thought at any point while listening to this record that there was something, even the smallest thing, not perfect, then you are surely in the completely wrong mindset. This may seem to be an awful statement, I get it, but it also happens to be true. Radiohead's superbly creative 96-97 period is easily comparable to The Beatles 66-67 one, but the thing is that while The Beatles released 3 masterpieces in that time, Radiohead got everything together and released an out-of-proportions bomb, changing the popular music panorama. OK Computer's influece in recent music has been subtle (because there're no acts that are "inmediately" derivative of Radiohead's turn-of-the-millenia period), but if you are willingful to listen... you'll find a bunch of surprises.

The Beatles Revolver
I would be, lets say, pretty "ok" if you guys tell me this is the best album of all time. I get the reasons, and I love the reasons. Revolver is the first time The Beatles put their whole potential on the table and started working around it, creating some flawless songs. It's ridiculous how flawless they are. When it comes to songwriting, melody, or even innovation, all musicians admire Revolver as a work to have as a model, something to use as the "you're doing it right" example. Their best, though the rest of their carreer will be full of great records, but none of them as consistent as Revolver.

Although not a particularly solid album (I'd discard a bunch of the tracks without thinking it twice) it's really one of the best albums of 1984, and maybe one of the most influential records of the 80s. "Lorelei" and "Domino" are fire.

Deerhunter Monomania
This is probably the best Deerhunter album. It's cohesive, chaotic and the only one that's consistently good. Some of the best songs 2013 left behind came from this mysterious, dark, and gloomy Indie Rock little masterpiece. Songs like "Pensacola", "Back to the Middle" and "Leather Jacket II" prove that the best Deerhunter is the one that knows how to rock the most. Takes a few listens but it's extremelly rewarding. In particular, I fell in love with "The Missing" instantly. That may happen to you with any song.

I didn't like this one at first, but getting used to Phair's manerisms helps a lot. Although it's certainly an album that could have been improved by letting more resources get involved in the recording and production process (sometimes the DIY aesthetic goes just way too far for the songs own good), I can't help but feeling this is a wonderful indie-songwriting manual. Listen to the way one chords goes to another so unpredictably. Listen to those spontaneous and full-of-life key changes! Melodies like the ones on "6'1"", "Never Said", "Fuck and Run" or "Divorce Song" are not stuff you see everyday. C'mon, this just can't be me.

Brian Eno would be proud because this is what he was thinking about when he (practically) invented the concept of electronic music. All the dreamy soundscapes and the possibilities to reach! On the other side, Claude Debussy would also be proud, since "Mistress" is basically the concept of what he was trying to teach pianists around the world to do. A remarkably solid package. Not even a 4.0 would make it justice.

Was meant to be the perfect Pink Floyd album but for some reason Waters (I don't know who did it, but I suspect it was him) decided to include "Have a Cigar" in the middle of the record. It adds nothing to the album but a commercial single. Of course, because all the people who bought this record were thinking about the "Money" kind of songs. Right?

I'm gonna put it simple: "Xtal" is the greatest piece of electronic music ever created. Electronic music traveled a long way just to get here. This is the song where everything starts and everything ends. It's not just about the blissful beat, it's not about the immersive reverb, it's not about the evocative synths, and it's not, I SWEAR IT'S NOT about the vocal sample. It's about the sum of all its parts. About everything together, being just one. That's what electronic music is all about. Let's rejoice in this majestic piece of music and all it has to offer! Oh, almost forgot... the rest of the album. Well, it's good. It's definitely good. There're some well layered textures and insanely original beats. All songs have their own "personality" and there's a lot of colour everywhere. Still, they never match the perfection of the opening track. It's understandable, Richard was barely around 17-20 when this album was recorded.

Clearly their best and an improvement all across the board: Hayley's vocals have improved a lot, in a way that we have no more of those cringe-inducing hooks that were common in Riot!, the lyrics are mature (even smart and ironic at points!), the instrumentation finally gets more interesting than just the basic pop-punk band set (colourful xylophone and string arrangements in "Ain't it Fun" and "Hate to See Your Heart Break"), the hooks have also improved by themselves because the melodies are clearly less generic (see any of the singles for more details), and the songwriting has also became more spontaneous and provocative (experimentation in "Future", gospel choirs in "Ain't it Fun"!). This is so obviously a great power pop album (it gets praised everywhere outside sputnikmusic) that the fact that it maintains such a lower rating here is a shame for this site. C'mon people, stop praising things for their appearance, you're better than that.

Talking Heads Remain in Light
A good album that managed to become a great one in front of the the eyes of music "erudites" for two obvious reasons: "Born Under Punches" and "Once in a Lifetime". The first one is a great track, super danceable, no needed big explanation. The latter is the late 70's hipster anthem #1, a perfect song that does everything right and never gets old. The rest of the album is forgetable, but not bad at all. It's a shame that the album quality relies on those two tracks.

It has its ups a downs. I mean, I could really do without a bunch of these songs (for example "Carnival Song", or the pretentiously awful title track) but the highlights are works of great songwriting finess. "Phantasmagoria in Two" is quite gorgeous, "I Never Asked to Be Your Mountain" is as invigorating as it gets, and "Pleasant Street" is probably one of the most atmospherical pieces of music ever written (and, I'd argue, an improvement on Dylan's "Ballad of a Thin Man"). Great highlights to always take into account.

Bruce Dickinson can't fucking sing on these songs. When his singing is raw it can pass, but whenever he goes for clean, "epic", vocals he sounds awful. It's an embarrassment. The rest of the band is doing ok, but not as well as they were doing a couple of years before.

The message doesn't get across at all, and the sequencing of the album is kind of terrible (Did anyone really need those noise and ambient interludes? Really?), but there are a bunch of tracks that should be saved ("Conceptual Romance", "Female Vampire" and other few) for reasons that anyone would understand. Jenny is a cool musician with cool ideas, but this is very messed up.

Pink Floyd Meddle
The big problem about Meddle is that those are not songs, they are small pieces of songs matched together in most randomly possible way ("Fearless" is the closest thing to a real song). This problem will be solved in a fancy way in their next album. Also, the great thing is that this stage of transition excludes both Syd Barret and Alan Parsons, which makes the songs sound like any other band around the time release sounded. And just to point out, "Echoes" cannot be half as good as the modern cannon tells us, that's for sure, specially taking into acount everything Pink Floyd has accomplished since then.

I don't see much effort put into any of these songs. Pleasant sounds, don't misunderstand me, but
the lack of desire to move forward might be problematic. It doesn't help that the best song Carey
wrote for this record ("Still, Still, Still.") didn't even end up featured on the release.

Angel Olsen My Woman
The first half is ok, nothing special (although "Never Be Mine" may give you reasons to pay attention). The second half is basically garbage. This is the classic example of a songwriter who has no compositional talent whatsoever and therefore proceeds to slow everything down in search for firm emotional ground, which, of course, doesn't necessarily have to be there. Vague lyrics that could have been written by everyone and thick layers of reverb everywhere. Nothing to offer.

Weak. Boring songs that sound as generic as they can get. This album is like a bizarre sleeping pill that for some reason whimpers all the time and then screams at you for not understanding its pain... just fucking grow up, dude. There have been a bunch of good emo revival acts (actually, even their own debut was kinda good, if I recall correctly), but this is just dull without a single note that could possibly claim for your attention. They aren't even trying anymore.

Any argument to redeem this album is over-rationalized wankery. This just fails as everything: as an experimental work it's substanceless bullshit, as a psychedelic album it's the weakest thing The Flaming Lips have been involved with, as a piece of pop music it's the most boring and pointless shit released this year, and as a confessional record is plain dumb and deserves facepalms. Cherry on top: Miley's voice is cringeworthy.
