yeah, it's obviously flawed at points, but good luck finding something this genuine AND optimistic anywhere else. the messages on songs like "Swim" and "Hammers and Strings" would seem overly optimistic if they weren't coming from someone who actually had been through it all and actually knew it would be ok.

"If West had interspersed the more mechanical tracks with some that were the exact opposite?say, simple piano interludes provided by his old collaborators John Legend or Jon Brion?he might have made a masterpiece. Instead, he's merely given us an extremely intriguing, sporadically gripping, undeniably fearless and altogether unexpected piece of his troubled soul."

wildly varied with the occasional very poor transition (Aurora -> Slasherr stands out.) relies a bit too much on the basic beat tape-esque format, instead of a more album-esque format. few songs really develop. despite all these complaints the hooks are really great, Kode9 (obviously) has great taste and (for the most part) great mixing skills. also works an excellent launchboard into any of the artists' wider discographies.

definitely tries too hard to be a very modern trendy album, and honestly he isn't the best rapper around, he sounds pretty much the same on most every track. the lyrics are middling, sometimes dull/borderline awful but occasionally pretty good. but it really works surprisingly well as an album and has some very nice production. also it gets progressively better as it goes so don't give up early.

are more palatable to the average teenage hip-hop fan
Mat Zo Damage Control
great multi-genre production, (mostly) great individual songs, not so great cohesive album. Zo doesn't seem to get that to truly defy genre boundaries he has to stir them up instead of just putting all the ingredients in a bowl and hoping for the best
MGMT Little Dark Age
Nicki Minaj Pink Friday
Nicki Minaj Queen
Phantogram Nightlife
Phil Collins Face Value
Romare Projections
Rustie Jagz The Smack
hasn't held up super well, cool blueprint of Glass Swords though. Pendulum is fun
Rustie Bad Science
Samiyam Man VS Machine
SBTRKT Save Yourself
Shamir Hope
never stop caring more about the product than the process, sputnik
Skrillex Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites
Sufjan Stevens The BQE
Suicideyear Japan
Ta-Ku Songs to Break Up To
The Glitch Mob Love Death Immortality
Tim Hecker and Daniel Lopatin Instrumental Tourist
Twenty One Pilots Vessel
Tycho Awake
Vallis Alps Vallis Alps
Vampire Weekend Father Of The Bride
Wise Blood Babyland
the sampling and all is cool I guess but what's the point?

2.5 average
A.G. Cook Radio Tank Mix
all of the absurdity of Personal Computer Music and 10% of the fun
Annie Endless Vacation
Aphex Twin Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments Pt 2
ASTR Varsity
Bright Eyes Digital Ash in a Digital Urn
Cam'ron The Program
Cashmere Cat Wild Love
Coldplay X&Y
Cool Uncle Cool Uncle
Flying Lotus Until the Quiet Comes
if you want sad jazz-sounding stuff go for You're Deadrif you want cool instrumental-hip-hop sounding stuff go for Cosmogrammarthere's no reason to go for this
Frankie Cosmos Fit Me In
Galantis Galantis
it's not *that* bad (I like "You") but most of the songs are real generic
Halsey Badlands
Harry Styles Harry Styles
HOLYCHILD The Shape of Brat Pop to Come
the production's super slick but I can imagine exactly how each song will sound by halfway through, if not sooner
Imagine Dragons Night Visions
Justin Bieber Journals
some solid tracks, some not so solid. good if not great production, but the first 5 or so tracks are pretty dull and lyrically it's still "ehh". great vocals though
Kode9 Nothing
M.E.S.H. Scythians
Maroon 5 Hands All Over
Maroon 5 V
Miami Horror All Possible Futures
Mura Masa Someday Somewhere
if the quality of this release were graphed it would be shaped like a U
Palm (USA-PA) Shadow Expert
Raury Indigo Child
"Superfly" is pretty much the only song I'd listen to again
SebastiAn Thirst
Seven Davis Jr. Universes
Sisyphus Sisyphus
Skrillex Leaving
right before I am completely convinced that "Leaving" is blatant plagiarism, the whole mood kind of tilts up. so I have to give him credit for being just a little bit creative. first two tracks are completely standard pre-Recess Skrillex. if you like that, you'll like this.
Skrillex My Name Is Skrillex
Standing On The Corner Red Burns
Susanne Sundfor Ten Love Songs
Ta-Ku Songs to Make Up To
The Fray How to Save a Life
The Glitch Mob Piece of the Indestructible
Twenty One Pilots Blurryface
Uppermost New Moon
Vic Mensa There's Alot Going On

2.0 poor
Arca @@@@@
Charli XCX 14
Clean Bandit New Eyes
Drake Scorpion
dvsn Sept. 5th
Future Brown Future Brown
mostly good vocals, but other than that all it's got is trendiness and that's debatable. what does it mean? why does it exist? who is it for? nobody really knows
Maroon 5 Overexposed
Maroon 5 Red Pill Blues
Porter Robinson Worlds Remixed
Selena Gomez Stars Dance
Skrillex Recess
Twerps Range Anxiety
this is basically Real Estate but much more boring, which is kind of saying something

1.5 very poor
Avicii True
considering how famous/popular he was at the time, trying to mix genres like he did deserves rapplause. however, concept=/=product, and this album, for the most part, does not.
Cigarettes After Sex Cigarettes After Sex
Ed Sheeran No. 6 Collaborations Project
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis The Heist
this is the album equivalent of that "like if you think cancer is bad" post. I'm surprised there's no KKK diss track
Sam Smith In the Lonely Hour
Snakehips Forever (Pt. II)

1.0 awful
Girls With Attitude Girls With Attitude
Sachiko M Bar Sachiko
just because art is unusual does not mean that it has merit. this is the best example of that principle I think I will ever find.
