| This album is definitely a grower and nowhere as bad as I thought it was on the first listen, but it is still by far the worst thing they have ever done. The ethereous and manic emotional moments are completely gone, the guitar riffs are simplified, the songs now rely on repetitive structures, they have abandoned all their hardcore roots and replaced them by Queen and (bad) 70ies prog worship, there is no suspense, no dynamics and no anticipation in the songs, everything just sounds flat. Worst of all though this record just lacks in terms of atmosphere and emotion. Everything sounds giddy and quirky instead of serious, and focused. It's hard to believe that the band consists of the same members who wrote songs such as Selkies, Backwards Marathon and White Walls. |
