  • bnelso55 Wow! Thanks the recommendations! Based on your descriptions, I think I will definitely enjoy the films you listed. I?m looking forward to Stalker, Marketa Lazarova and Woman in the Dunes. I?ll probably start with those. I?ll see if I can find a copy of Zazie somewhere online. It has to be out there.

  • bnelso55 Another I enjoy is Aleksandr Sokurov?s ?Russian Ark?, a single-take tour through the Hermitage Museum. Sergey Dreyden?s performance is mystifying, imo. I occasionally enjoy the weird and surreal, so I like Jan Svankmajer?s ?Lesson Faust? from 1994. It?s a very free adaptation of Goethe?s ?Faust? and the tale of the man who sold his soul to the devil. This one takes places in a strange, evil puppet theater, where an everyday man stumbles upon an odd version of the play involving live actors, stop motion animated characters and life-size puppets. It?s off-the-wall absurd, but the dark humor and sort of magical realism really appeals to me. Do you have some other favorites you?d recommend?

  • bnelso55 I?m quite new to Tarkovsky?s work, but I will follow some of the recommendations you listed. I haven?t seen ?Andrei Rublev? yet, but I have heard more than once that it is arguably one of the best films ever made. I need to see that soon as I do not doubt that it will become a favorite of mine. I like and agree with your assessment of ?Solaris?. It?s a fantastic film and I find myself drawn in by the hallucinatory imagery. Would you recommend ?Stalker? or ?Nostalghia? next?

  • bnelso55 Yeah. It is a shame his film career is over, but you?re right, he left on a high note with Turin Horse. I haven?t seen all of his work, but I would say it is my favorite of what I have seen so far. Like you said, it is gloomy glorious. Do you have any top picks for Tarkovsky?

  • bnelso55 You?re ahead of me. I need to pull myself together and try to take in the full Satantango experience. From what I?ve seen of it, I can see how it could transcend standard film categorization. Like you said, it?s on a whole different level. You have to invest some of yourself into the film in order to receive any emotional returns. That is a challenge for even the most ardent film fanatics.
