High on Fire
Death Is This Communion
Yeah this is really solid metal. The fuzzy, stoned heaviness of High on Fire\'s past remains, but on this album it is infused with speed and a metallic intensity. High on Fire open up the album with some of their best grooves, namely on Fury Whip and Turk. The second half of the album consists of more experimental songs, namely Ethereal (which is my favorite track) and Cyclopean Scape. The only true dud on this album is the title track, with a plodding pace that is reminiscient of Sleep, but with none of the magic. Overall, if you want sick guitar riffing and grooves, both typical and inventive, this is right up your alley.

Candlemass
Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
Wake me when it's over. Does anybody think that this album is eerie or haunting in any way? The melodies are rather straightforward and not melancholic at all, the lead singer has an irritatingly high voice and is singing about demons and sorcerers and a bunch of other World of Warcraft nonsense that I don't give two shits about. And that spoken word intro to Demon's Gate just killed me with its stupidity. Do they think they're sinister in any way? Basically: Solitude is good, Crystal Ball is decent, that riff that opens the distorted section of A Sorcerer's Pledge is killer, and Black Stone Weilder has some interesting riffs. Otherwise, thi

Focus
Focus is one of the tightest albums I\'ve ever heard. The melodic riffs lock together into dense, impenetrable harmonies, the fretless bass bounces along in the background, and the jazz-fusion drumming style locks everything together. Everything is extremely technical as well; the guitarists manage to make coherently melodic riffs that are ridiculously technical but don\'t thrash around gratingly, and the drumming consists of difficult time signatures played on mostly the hi-hat and cymbals in typical jazz style. There are some absolutely sublime clean jazz breaks wedged in between the slices of melodic metal that are played beautifully. Yet

Evergrey
In Search Of Truth
If I was told to pick one band that exemplified all of the qualities that made the majority of power metal so overwhelmingly bland, I think I would pick Evergrey (not that other bands don\'t exemplify the same traits, it\'s just that people like Evergrey, and I don\'t. And I\'m a contrarian). First off, the concept is cheesy and stupid. Yet Evergrey think it\'s somewhat of a home run idea, so they include little skits at the beginning of each track to make absolutely sure the album\'s storyline is ingrained in your brain. It\'s not like they try to subtly weave the concept\'s storyline throughout the album; oh, no. They blast it in your face

Meshuggah
I
I is essentially Meshuggah\'s musical progression compacted into a nice, 21 minute package. The strange, offbeat thrash of Destroy Erase Improve makes an appearance, as do the mechanical, time signature bending riffs of Chaosphere and the slow, detuned, crushing blasts of Nothing. But there are some aspects of I that are entirely new. The jazzy ambience present in the second half of the song is something we\'ve heard only in very limited portions before, and previews the out-there progressions of Catch 33. The outright explosion of noise at the 1:30 mark is easily the most intense moment in the Meshuggah discography, and the solo at 5:40 is t
