| 2.5 average | Adrian Hertzberg CONTRIBUTOR | March 4th 12 | I haven't had access to the internet for the past few days, so I wasn't able to see people's ratings for this start pouring in but I knew that as soon as I logged in to sputnik that this would be really high on the "popular albums" list and would have a rating above 4. Lo and behold: sputnik does not disappoint. If we're being serious though you guys, I mean, come on, this is not that good at all. Lazy instrumentation and below-average production (only the drums sound decent) along with straight up boring songwriting make this The Mars Volta's worst album yet. Silly sputnik with their silly overhyping.

| 2.0 poor | Sleeping At Last | March 8th 12 | Noctorniquet is a sloppy and awkward mess where most of the songs lack urgency and is plagued by poor production. The instrumentation is often good but the songs seem too incoherent. Lastly, the vocals here do not help much, if anything, Noctorniquet was probably better without them.

10 Bumps | Bump |
| 4.0 excellent | NeutralThunder12 | March 1st 12 | It's just too hit and miss to decide on a rating yet. The atmosphere on this shit is crazy
but half the time they ruin anything good they have going with a pointless culmination of
blippy's and bloopy's to try to spice things up, and it just flattens the track. Obviously
going into a Mars Volta album you know its gonna be overdone, and insanely detailed to
the point of musical ridiculousness, and they continued that here, sometimes it works,
sometimes it doesn't. The definite positive however is that there are a few fucking sweet
tracks buried within the record. "Aegis", "Molochwalker" and "Empty Vessels" are perhaps
better than anything the band has done since "Frances the Mute", which doesn't say much
considering how much fail was packed into the previous three records, but believe me, theres
some killer shit on here. I think I've given up on them ever making something fully
satisfying all the way through again, because lets face it, when you're this ambitious it's
hard to be consistent- but I'm glad they still have some brilliant songs here and there. It could range from a
2.5-4, only time will tell.

| 4.0 excellent | TheOneirologist | March 2nd 12 | Took a while to grow on me, but like every single other Volta album, it finally clicked in. Unlike anything I've
ever heard before as the band continues to make the most thought provoking music today. People will most
certainly dislike this album, but those to give to it's high demands will find the results are quite rewarding. It
was a bold move from a band not scared to ventured into uncharted territories. Highlights include,
"Dyslexicon" "Empty Vessels Make the Loudest Sound" "Aegis" "Molochwalker" "Zed and Two Naughts"
"Noctourniquet" and "In Absentia."

| 3.9 excellent | Jacob Royal STAFF | March 8th 12 | The Mars Volta are known for stepping outside of their faux-prog-Baphometal genre rather
frequently, and while Noctourniquet does get lost in itself rather often, what else did we
expect? And the high moments of this startlingly consistent release are monumental. There's
ground tread on this release that's otherwise been dormant in the group for ages, and it
mostly emerges from pure simplicity and straightforward elegance. They finally are starting
to latch onto the idea that they don't need to wear their quirkiness on their sleeve to make
a good song, and this realization will prove to be monumental in the forthcoming success of
the Mars Volta. Because honestly, despite the already insane moments this band has had, the
truth is that the most potent moments of the Mars Volta are only beginning to surface.

| 3.5 great | Eric Greenman | October 27th 12 | Though I didn't expect much from this album at first, Noctourniquet has definitely been one of my pleasant surprises of 2012. Even though the technicality and heaviness isn't as present, the songwriting ability and vocals on this LP have been a major improvement from the last few releases. There are some downfalls on this album though: no versatility, not a lot of great instrumentation (outside of the percussion), and the handful of uninteresting songs. Overall a pretty solid release from a band that hasn't had one in a while.

| 4.0 excellent | Mark Campbell | March 15th 12 | Really takes a few listens to get it all, but honestly this is what Octahedron should have been; a rather concise set of songs that balance tunefulness and TMV's penchant for insanity without going too far in either direction. Aside from new drummer Deantoni Parks' human drum machine spasms of craziness, this is TMV at their most stripped-down and restrained (essentially a power trio with a keyboard + vocals now), and Noctourniquet benefits greatly from it. Sonically it veers from straight ballads to atonal post-punk spats to heavy electronic ambient, all within individual songs at times, but sounding strangely straightforward and polished for TMV. For this first time in, well, ever, it almost sounds like a real band playing instead of 29 session musicians having an orgy listening to Zappa and King Crimson.

I think it's only a matter of time before I can appreciate every song.

| 4.0 excellent | GreyShadow | March 26th 12 | It gets better and better with every listen because you realize that everything is in its right place here. Bump |
| 4.0 excellent | Brien C. Stevenson | March 26th 12 | After a bit of a lull with Amputechture and Octehedron, The Mars Volta finally sound like a band that's enjoying recording again. This doesn't quite get back to the days of Deloused, but it does harken back to the latter days, when the band still had a little bit of focus to their music.
Bump |
| 1.5 very poor | ShreddingBullets | March 21st 12 | I don't get this album at all, and I'm a huge TMV fan. They take from the Taylor Swift playbook with "Empty Vessels", which is their worst song to date, and there's no really great moments. Lots of repetition within songs and irritatingly boring synths make this a hard listen. Lapochka blows too.

This just keeps growing, with obvious highlights being The Malkin Jewel, Dyslexicon, The Whip Hand and Aegis. No doubt, as the album opens itself up upon further listens, more highlights will arise. Great album
Bump |
| 3.0 good | Jamper | March 3rd 12 | still on my first listen. But it seems Omar really needed to share the writting with the band. Finally, we can listen to TMV and not an Omar's personal project. I guess this is the opposite of present Opeth
