it's another alcest album. some tracks fantastic, some not so, but it's certainly a more consistent effort than ecailles de lune. i can't imagine any alcest fans being disappointed. it's nothing but really pretty, but isn't that what alcest has always been? :]

Alcest basically perfected the sound, they've been working on since their debut EP. Everything is extremely lean and tight, the black metal moments seamlessly flowing with the shoegazing ethereal parts.

There are two ways to look at Les Voyages De L'ame. One as just another album in the music industry and one as an album in Alcest's catalog. Looking to the latter perspective is calling the album chickenshit to a certain extent seeing as it doesn't really bring anything new to the table, though acknowledging the more consistent songwriting compared to its predecessor. But as another album in the music industry in general this album deserves all the praise in the world for being just what it is, a good Alcest album. Which speaks for itself.

I had a hard time settling on a rating for this one. This is very professionally executed, the atmosphere created is great, and I'm really digging this subgenre right now. I rate the album's second track as the best song in Alcest's catalogue--from the unique manner of the harsh vocals coming in to the layering of guitars (a la Agalloch "Falling Snow") as the song rumbles to its conclusion it grips the listener's attention. On the down side, "Beings of Light" sounds like a weak imitation of earlier Alcest, and I'm surprised that it was included here as the spark of creativity is obviously missing.

Even though St?phane is being often credited as the "inventor" of this blackened shoegaze movement, Alcest fails to deliver anything new on this album to refresh the genre. There just isn't much variety in between the songs, entire album feels like one big track that feels like it goes on forever and ever and ever... . There is this big lack of anything special that would keep me wondering and craving for more or even hit the replay button. Nada. If you're a fan of everything Alcest did before, you will love this album. There is this same sound, same vocals, same everything. But if you expected something new, you'll be extremely disappointed.
