Inconsistent and too many cringe worthy parts that overshadow the parts that are actually quite enjoyable. Certainly a "dark" album, and certainly better than the ST.
This was actually not too bad a listen even if it was exorbitantly long. Check it out, forget about it an hour later, then throw a few tracks in your shuffle mix to enjoy when they come up.

Avenged Sevenfold?s ?Nightmare? exceeds all of their past efforts in terms of musical creativity and diversity, genuine emotion within the music, atmosphere, technicality, and nearly everything else. It's not flawless, but its a leap ahead of their last album.

Avenged Sevenfold’s Nightmare is their latest album following the untimely death of their late and great drummer Jimmy “the rev” Sullivan. Jimmy’s death has an obvious effect on the ambiance of the album, whether it be within the music, or just the knowledge that the beloved man behind the double base set will no longer be there. Despite the dark atmosphere of the album, Avenged Sevenfold has once again made it clear that they will surprise you with each subsequent release, whether the surprise is welcome or not is up to you.
The title track Nightmare has been blasting the radio waves for months now, but this reviewer believes that the true artistry lies in the less popular songs. The 10:52 long “Save Me” is truly a masterpiece of cutting guitar, soaring orchestra and brutal drums that only merits one description: epic. The lyrics behind the music are a heartfelt tribute to Sullivan, and are some of the best written lyrics ever produced by Avenged Sevenfold: “a moment seen through those eyes, crystal blue disguise, they say that all beauty must die, I say it just moves on.” Save Me is the crowning jewel of this album and easily the best track on the record. Despite its length, the listener will want to play it again right after the end. Few songs can transport the listener into another state of mind, actually bring the listener on a musical journey like Save Me can. One of the best Avenged Sevenfold songs ever.
Buried Alive, the melodic, yet heavy head banger’s ballad is unlike any other Avenged song, while still retaining their roots of dual guitar solos and powerful vocals. This track is one of the best on the album.
God Hates Us is more or less a tribute to Waking the Fallen and Sound the Seventh Trumpet, with metalcore riffs and Matt’s familiar blood curdling scream. This homage to their past albums was also seen in their Call Of Duty single “Not Ready To Die” making Avenged Sevenfold fans wonder is the next album will have trace elements of their days at Hopeless Records.
Welcome to the Family has since become a classic of Avenged Sevenfold song, and understandably so, as Avenged Sevenfold continues to prove that just because their metal, doesn’t mean they can’t be catchy. Also one of the best songs on the album.
Fiction is a track very dear to true Avenged Sevenfold fans, as it is the last vocals the Rev ever laid down. Fiction is a haunting, yet hopeful song about death, and Jimmy’s influences are written all over it, from his vocal tracks to the unique musical style.
So Far Away is another instant classic, a heartfelt tribute to Jimmy written by guitarist, Synister Gates. This will undoubtedly be the song concert goers croon along to with the band.
Victim is another unique Avenged song, beginning with a soulful female vocal that eventually emerges into a faster pace ballad, once again attributing to Jimmy’s death.
Natural Born Killer is one of four songs (Nightmare Buried Alive and Welcome to the Family being the others) that has absolutely no connection to Jimmy Sullivan, and is a breath of fresh air from the somber tone of the record. The fast paced intricate guitar and drum work creates a good, although relatively generic metal song, though still retaining the unique Avenged Sevenfold sound.
Tonight The World Dies is probably Matt’s best vocal performance on the record, yet seems out of place compared to the rest of the songs. Still, Tonight the World Dies carries as much emotion as any other song they’ve made.
Matt Shadow’s voice has improved significantly over the years, making him (in this author’s opinion) the best vocal talent in metal. The listener will be delighted to here very little effects or backing on Matt’s singing, giving the album a very organic feeling.
The drumming is, as usual, fantastic. Heavy base rolls mixed with complex hat and tom work all pulled together with the central necessity of carrying a recognizable rhythm (something a lot of band seem to forget).
The guitar work is fast and complex, while retaining the classic beauty of Avenged Sevenfold harmony. Johny’s base work is of course underrated and unnoticed by many critics.
Mike Elizondo and Andy Wallace did a fantastic job producing this record, giving it a clean, clear sound that highlights every instrument. Easily the best produced album of the five
There are very few bad characteristics of this album, but a problematic flaw with many Avenged Sevenfold songs are that the lyrics aren’t very well thought out. “It’s your ***in’ nightmare” is the most recognized line on the whole album, which is a damn shame, because it makes the band seem juvenile and immature, when other songs on the album have lyrics that are near-philosophical. Knowing that Nightmare would be the flagship track of the album, they probably should have brought more high-brow lyrics to the table, an ability this author knows they have.
It’s difficult to say if this is the best album they’ve made yet, because all of them are so different. Needless to say, Nightmare is an instant classic that has propelled Avenged Sevenfold into their much deserved stardom, without selling out.

After hearing all the shit from people about this album on this website, and not to mention the not so impressive STA, I was expecting it to suck balls. On the other hand I found it to be more than enjoyable. Yeah, I will agree with some people that the lyrics can get cheesy (TOTAL NIGHTMARE...was he fucking serious?), but man I think the music is great. The first half to me was more of a guilty pleasure rather than utter awesomeness. The second half of the album I think is amazing. All in all, I love this album, fantastic melodies, catchy choruses, Mike Portnoy is always good, guitars are amazing, and the vocals were good too. Best songs: Save Me, Fiction, and Victim

his album is absolutely perfect. Nightmare scares the shit out oof me and then makes me dance in the super poppie chorus lol. Welcome to Family is a nice groovy track that I can image pole-dancing to. Danger Line is all Iron Maiden-esqu and utterly brilliant. Buried Alive is the most original song I've ever heard it's a ballad and gets heavier OMG! Natural Born Killer is like Almost Easy but better. God Hates Us is like perfect and the band's brutalist thing they've ever ritten. Victim is like 70's proggresive accept atmosferic and has some cool falsatto singing. Tonight the World Dies is kinda creepy and amazing. Fiction is one of the best song's Ive heard in my liffe. And Save Me is like Dream Theater accept less shitty. All in all amazing. (6/5)

With this release, Avenged Sevenfold made it known they could still make some decent tunes. Seen by many as a tribute to their late friend and former bandmate Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, who tragically overdosed in late 2009, Nightmare is an improvement over their self-titled in many ways. It is more varied than the self-titled and features some of the better slow songs Sevenfold has written, such as the heartfelt "So Far Away" and the surprisingly good "Fiction". "Danger Line" and "Save Me" are another duo of enjoyable songs, but the rest range from listenable to inescapably boring. The album suffers from being very long-winded, and has an unfortunate amount of cringeworthy vocal moments. At best, it was a step in the right direction for the band, which is at least commendable, especially after losing their beloved drummer and friend.
|4.0 excellent||somerandomusername | August 23rd 13|
"Nightmare" marks Avenged Sevenfold's sound redefinition. The first album after Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan's tragic passing is the heaviest effort made by the American band as well. Who can deny the sheer emotion of the brilliant ballad "Fiction" or the dark aura and the powerful impact of the lengthy "Save Me".

Solid enough listen. Not a lot going off but the songs are emotional and actually carry a lot of weight with them despite Shadows really bad vocal performance on some of the songs.
|2.5 average||Rob Marais | September 20th 12|
Very mixed feelings on this album. After the brilliance of City of Evil and (to a lesser extent) their self titled effort, this album left me wanting to smash the speakers only two minutes in - Shadows' whiny entry line of "Now your Nightmare's come to life..." is so cringe worthy, it beggars belief; the "back-to-roots" metalcore of God Hates Us also feels jarringly out of place. Buried Alive, So Far Away and Save Me, however, are all good songs - and Fiction is, perhaps, the best they have ever composed. As well as being a tragedy for the band members and his family, the death of The Rev may also spell bad news for the music because, without his influence, I fear Sevenfold will slip even further into mediocrity.

Killer album, good album....good album? Great album. One of their best...one of their best? Probably their best.
|0.0 || | January 29th 12|
Avenged Sevenfold's "Nightmare" is heavily inspired by the death of their drummer, even including his vocals on the song "Fiction". Multiple ideas are experimented with on this album, most of them not as cheesy as the self-titled album. The instrumentation is solid, and the vocals, while grating suit the songs well. The band needs to work on increasing the fluidity of their arrangements and keeping a majority of their songs from having similar arrangements. However, this is a vast improvement from their last album.
|2.5 average||SlickNewton | November 23rd 11|
I have to say average, due to the fact that most of the songs on the album sound like they took their structure from the self-titled release, or were just b-sides rewritten to follow suit. While Shadows' vocals are nothing special (except for those on God Hates Us and So Far Away), Mike Portnoy does an impressive job filling in for The Rev. Meanwhile, everyone else in the band seems commonplace.

I actually like Avenged Sevenfold, not on a fanboy level, I can enjoy and appreciate their music and this is in my opinion one of the best albums they've put out so far. The best Avenged Sevenfold album to date is actually the first one without amazing drummer The Rev which is surprising. This is a fucking consistent as fuck album with a lot of good songs on it and very little to not enjoy about it. There isnt really anything TOO special abotu this album hence the 3.5 but its more than listenable and all the songs have something good about them with the possible exception of the overly annoyingly catchy song Welcome to The Family. Check this album out if you are looking for a solid as fuck hard rock album that will absoultely knock the stuffing out of you at times. Just dont expect the best ting on earth. They even attempted a minor return to the metalcore days on God Hates Us and it turned out really good after a shity clean opening and a shitty clean closing . The title track is a catchy as fuck song and Fiction stands out as one of the most fucking emotional tracks out there

Positive: Shadows vocals were killer and this in my opinion beat out COE and the self titled. Shadows tried mixing screaming in God Hates Us and certainly made it work. Pushing the boundry into death metal. Another positive is the mellowed out work of so far away, tonight the world dies, and victim. As well as the emotion behind it. Mike did an excellent job filling in as well. The album is very balenced.rNegative: Guitar work at times was unoriginal and was deeply dissapointed. Syn went from in early work being emotional in it like slash....to attempting to do idk what by sweeping and doing stuff like alexi laiho. I like COB but syn does not need to go in that direction. Another negative is the cheesyness of the song nightmare and how unfit it was for a single in my opinion. Welcome to the family and so far away were the shouldve been hits.

after Jimmy'THe Rev" Sullivan's tragic overdose of drugs and narcotics in January of 2010 all the millions of fans of Avenged Sevenfold were blown away very much. They were saying, "How will the band continue after the death of the greatest drummer of all time"?. The band sat there asking themself this very same question that fans were asking as well..."How will the band continue after the death of the greatest drummer of all time"? and then in 2010 just a mear months after the Rev tragic dies and they will make this album a classic of our time called "NIGHTMARE". the title sums it up very hard; after the rev died he is yes the band has nightmares, nightmars of drugs and pain...true suffering that only a band as hard as A7X nos.
the first song, nightmare, is also the name of the CD. coincidental? i think no. this song is heavyer, and the rev is heavy too as yes he died. heavy just like the hearts of A7X after they rev dead. this song has the hardest drums on the album just like the rev drummed hard. it also has good guitar.
welcome ot the family is a song about when the rev died of a drug overdose and he entered the family of drugs. this song has crazy guitar, hard vocals, and cool bass.
danger line is a hard song with hard instruments that is very good. it is harder than iron.
buried alive is about the rev. true story they in a7x though that He was going to be buried alive like kill bill 2 cus they did not believe that there hard drummer was really dead and yes.
natural born killer is about the movie. mom wont let me watch it but my uncle says it is a good movie. he beats me up alot. it has crazy bass, slammin guitar, and most of all, insane bass.
so far away is about the rev - he is far away from here cus he died.
god hates us is about god hates us. I skip this song cus I am a christian.
Victim is my favorite song on this CD. it is truly good hard cus the rev died and he was a victim a victim to...drugs.
tonight the world dies is about how the world died when the rev did.
Fiction has synster gates' best guitar playin EVER. he is such a wild guitar man.
save me is 10 minutes long, the longest heard i have ever song in my hole LIFE. m shadows sings his eyes out like the rev died.
Nightmare is a hard cd with crazy music and it is the best cd i have ever heard.

At first I was disappointed that this album was not a return to their roots. I thought this was going to be an all metal album. However, I'm happy that it is not. This is an album where you can tell that the band is grieving The Rev. Some of the songs are so emotional they almost brings tears to your eyes. It took me a couple of listens to really get into this album but it is really good. Recs include: Victim, Save Me, Fictions, Tonight the World Dies.
|2.5 average||aemaeth | August 30th 10|
This album I feel starts of fairly strong, with a number of solid tracks (some of which are the best that the band has ever done from the catchy Nightmare to the Unforgiven-eque Burried Alive). But as the band begins to explore new territories with keys and softer songs (obviously dealing with the loss of The Rev) the quality falls through the floor. I like the experimentation, but the songs themselves are not worthwhile (mostly ruined by Shadow's vocals/lyrics) and I doubt I will listen to any of them years down the line.

They have continued to push themselves, resulting in the heaviest material they have ever written. However, A7X tend to fall into painfully familiar territory on some songs. Great Album overall.

Way too much ballads. Nowhere nere as good as Waking the Fallen or city of evil. I even prefer the self titled. It might grow on me but I pretty sure it is their worst album.

The bland and rather generic first half of the album is deffinatley offputing, despite it actually not being too bad. The second half is amazing however and Fiction in particular is absolutley brilliant. The Rev's voice and words really have a haunting quality and so its hard not to be affected. Shame about the rather boring average first half.
|3.5 great||TrantaLocked | July 27th 10|
God Hates Us is a weak point? After a long period I still only find three song-God Hates Us, Fiction and Save Me-that still appeal to me. I do agree that A7X overall comes short with this one.
|3.5 great||Highlander79 | July 27th 10|
Definitely an improvement over the self-titled. Catchier, even on the heavier tracks. Portnoy is a treat to hear on this album, really fills in beautifully for the Rev.
|3.0 good||Dan Phillips | July 27th 10|
A nice little return to form from A7X. It's not perfect by any means ("Danger Line" is cheesy and "Welcome to the Family" is a tad generic), but it's a heck of a step up from the s/t. The songs are more melodic and focused, which helps greatly and there are some nice little progressive leanings in places (the beginning of "Save Me" definetely has been influenced by Portnoy). Unfortionatly, the lyrics still arent great and the first half of the album is a little weak, but the awesome second half makes up for this. 3-3.5.
