Avenged Sevenfold's first album Sounding the Seventh Trumpet, was recorded when band memberswere nineteen years old,It
was released originally on their first label, Goodlife Recordings. At thispoint their sound was mostly a mix of Hardcore andpunk
(notably streets). After lead guitaristSynyster Gates joined the band, the intro track "To End The Rapture" was re-recorded
with Gatesplaying, and the album was re-released on Hopeless Records. Their follow-up album, entitled WakingtheFallen, was
also released on Hopeless Records and was awarded a positive rating in RollingStone magazine. Shortly after itsrelease,
Avenged Sevenfold were signed to Warner Bros. Records.
City of Evil, released on June 7, 2005, strays from metalcore, heading more towards heavy metaland adds a more hard
rocksound with influences ranging from various bands, just looking at theartwork depicts some NWOBHM influence the band
hasincepted. Although the band has beenlabeled metal, metalcore, and hard rock in many publications, the band
themselvesclaim they are a"heavy-metal" band and have no musical similarities to metalcore in any way, although this
isheavily debatedby their peers[citation needed]. During the recording of City of Evil, M. Shadows'vocal styling changed to
focus more onmelodic singing rather than hardcore screaming. M.Shadows had minor surgery on his vocal cords, but he has
claimed thiswas not responsible for theband's change of musical style. He says the purpose was to remove the band from a
genre thatwas"dying."[citation needed.
The band's name is a reference to the book of Genesis in The Bible where Cain is sentenced to livein exile for the crime
ofmurdering his brother. God marked him so that none would kill him onaccount of his sin; the man who dared to kill Cain
wouldhave "vengeance taken upon himsevenfold." The title of Avenged Sevenfold's song "Chapter Four" references Genesis
IV,thechapter of the Bible in which the story of Cain and Abel takes place. The song's subject alsoappears to be this
story."Beast and the Harlot", yet another song derived from the Bible, comesfrom the book of Revelation and refers to
thepunishment of Babylon the Great, world empire andseat of false religion. Another Bible reference occurs in the song
TheWicked End. In the song, several times it is said "dust the apple off, savor each bite, and deep inside you know
Adamwasright." making reference to Eve eating the forbidden fruit. Although the band's title and members'stage names
makereferences to religion, Shadows stated in an interview that they are "not reallyreligious at all." "Anyone that read the
lyricsand really knew anything about us, they would knowwe're not promoting either", he said. "That's one thing about this
bandthat I love is that we neverreally shove any kind of, like, political or religious beliefs on people. We just, the music's
theretoentertain and maybe thought-provoking on both sides, but we don't try to, like, really shove anythingdown anyone's
throat. There's too many bands that do that nowadays, I think."[1.
The song "Bat Country" is a reference to the book "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". The song isdedicated to the author ofthe
book, the late Hunter S. Thompson.
Their song "Blinded In Chains" was used in the soundtrack for the video games Need for Speed:Most Wanted and
ArenaFootball. "Bat Country" was used in the soundtracks for SSX on Tour, NHL06 and Madden 06, following in the footsteps
of"Chapter Four" which had also been on thesoundtrack for NHL 2004, Madden 2004 and NASCAR Thunder 2004. The
song"Beast and theHarlot" was in the soundtrack for Burnout Revenge. All the above games, not coincidentally, areproduced
byvarious divisions of Electronic Arts. "Beast and the Harlot" also appears inRedOctane's Guitar Hero II, released in November
7,2006. The song "Burn it Down" is featured onthe October 24th, 2006 release of the Saw III soundtrack.
During recent tours, spring 2006 tour and Ozzfest 2006), Avenged Sevenfold have been performingthe song "Walk",
originallyby Pantera, as part of a tribute to the late "Dimebag" Darrell LanceAbbott (Aug. 20, 1966-Dec. 8, 2004). Also
becausealternative press magazine asked AvengedSevenfold to do the cover song for the album "Kerrang High voltage a Brief
Historyof Rock".
At the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, Avenged Sevenfold received the award for best new artist. They took the award
overseveral other artists--Fall Out Boy and James Blunt. This is somewhatironic, since they aren't "new artists", and have
beenperforming for many years. After canceling falland winter 2006 tour dates, the band is planning their unnamed fourth
studioalbum. M. Shadowshas stated that it won't be a "City of Evil Part 2" or "Waking the Fallen Part 2", because they
wanttochange their sound once more. They say it will be somewhat of a surprise/shock to A7X fans.Something unexpected.

An Avenged Sevenfold DVD is also percolating and could possible be out as soon as fall 2007.
On September 16, 2008, Avenged Sevenfold released a DVD (Live in the LBC) and B-side album(Diamonds in the Rough).
TheB-side album includes covers of bands Pantera and Iron Maiden.
Following the untimely death of their drummer Jimmy Sullivan or "The Rev" on December 28, 2009,the band stated on
theirfacebook page in Feburary 2010 that they would be recording their fifthstudio album with Dream Theater drummer,
MikePortnoy. It was stated by the band that this wouldhave been what Jimmy wanted since Portnoy was an idol of his. « hide |
