to me it seems a bit boring and repetitive for immolation. still decent because it is immolation but i think there is a lot of fat to be trimmed with the songs

My experience with Immolation in recent times is that they have a knack for writing really great death metal tracks and their albums are produced in a manner where the vocals, guitars and drums all garner respect. On the other hand they definitely stick to their guns and while the songs don't reach formulaic levels they have a signature. In some respects it is reminiscent of Converge, if you love the general sound you are in heaven but if you are looking for a bit more variety this album might not last in your rotation for too long. One thing that stands out is their ability to lay down the base layer of a solid riff and add interesting harmonies and dissonance with the lead guitars, a lot of interesting layering here compared to other death metal outfits. Immolation are also tasteful with their dissonance and do a good job sticking to brutally heavy rhythms but not just sticking to tired death metal riff tropes.

I counted about 18 times they've panned left or right channels and into stereo throughout rthe record; I didn't count how many times a riff starts on open C or a power chord on low C. rI would have descended into madness. If Shalaty wasn't so obsessed with rblast-beat drumming, this would have been a better listen. All of this plagued the last two rrecords too. Same ole' formulas, a legendary DM band streamlined and modernized. More raggressive and heavier than the last two records, at least. That Dead Can Dance tribute song rwas so random. Overall, Not bad but not great either, which isn't what I'm looking for from rthis band.
