3.5 great | StrizzMatik | March 15th 10 | Yeah, it's been said and will continue to be said - Chris Pennie's influence permeates Year Of The Black Rainbow in almost every way, from the electronic swells of "Guns Of Summer" (featuring what is probably the sickest instrumental work the band has done yet) to the dark brooding synths of "Far", along with drumming that puts the phoned-in Good Apollo: Foo Edition (and their entire past discography) to shame while being surprisingly restrained and tasteful throughout.
Throughout the album every band member has standouts and plays a bit more outside the typical Coheed box. It's way less poppy and a lot more moody and dark, from the weirdly atonal/minor riffs of "This Shattered Symphony", the insane DEP-meets-Rush rhythms of "Guns Of Summer" and the almost Mars Volta groove of "In The Flame Of Error", Coheed bring a strange mix of electro-prog-pop that shows a much more experimental side of the band and a much needed (did I say evolution? Let's say "sidestep") in sound after the pedestrian NWFT.
Oh btw Pennie composed the electronic stuff so he gets just as much credit as the rest. If anything, Claudio and Travis stepped back hard and let the rest of the band carry it a bit, to great result.
2011 Edit: Ya this actually isn't that great but w/e

2.5 average | NeutralThunder12 | March 18th 10 | Oh well. Coheed is a great band, really great, but they've finally released a record that is lucky to be solid on it's best day. Way too much experimentation, in a bad way, the experiments don't work, every song has some brilliant melodies from Claudio, and fantastic drumming, but most of this is drowned out by synths and Volta-esque digital effects that completely ruin whatever few good qualities this did have. I am disappointed, not only because I am a Coheed fan, but because this is most likely a sound they are going to keep for a while. Too many synths, too many ideas that don't fit, too much for Coheed to handle. Their older, stripped down style focused on layering in guitar riffs and epic melodies, this falls flat.

4.5 superb | ThePalaceOfWisdom | March 15th 10 | I think it's safe to say that Chris Pennie was the missing piece to the Coheed puzzle, whilst their previous efforts had all been incredible, the drumming was undoubtedly the weak link, beyond moving even further forward as songwriters finally each instrumental performance is an equal contribution which makes it all the more better to listen too.

3.5 great | Hep Kat | April 3rd 10 | Year of the Black Rainbow is by far the most outlandishly retarded title the Coheed and Cambria multi-verse has loosed upon the world. I know- my girlfriend made me read the comics. That said everything else is fantastic. Claudio Sanchez appears to have finally found some testosterone, displaying fantastic new lows to compliment the highs in his vocal range, a key example of which being "Pearl of the Stars." The musicianship, too, leaves nothing to be desired as the band rumbles through blistering tracks such as "Guns of Summer" and "This Shattered Symphony" that throw the pop sensibilities to the wayside sans the hooks of course. Great addition to C&C's catalog.

4.5 superb | Niceinvader | April 18th 10 | This has enough unfamiliar direction it feels like a complete stranger... or a stranger you met in a past life. My gripes at first were as follows: It doesn't have that sweet fucking C&C epic theme song, even though I guess NWFT didn't really have it either. It also doesn't have that rediculously building intro, what it does have is an ambient piece that is supposed to represent the beginning (or end?) of a battle. They lost the quirkiness in the lyrics/ story elements that stayed consistent in their albums, like "goodnight tonight, my love" or "what did I do to deserve all of you". Or where was the closing movements, like the velorium camper and willing wells. (I miss that stuff so much.) I do understand that it's the prequel album but it certainly didn't feel like it belonged in the same universe as the others. To me it still feels like a seperate story not the chain of events that led up to second stage. Yet the more I listen and dwell on this album I realize that this is a band maturing and opening up a new chapter that represents a darker and chaotic side. I believe whatever happens next in the coheed discog. will be more experimental and embracing of the progressive side of their music. I've come to terms to understand that YotBR is a preface to their earlier work as well as a prologue to ventures away from the coheed and cambria story arc to more conceptual scifi and horror stories. They still have to make their own alchemy index imo and I think now that the band story is over they can now really go down the rabbit hole.

4.0 excellent | Rarehero | April 2nd 10 | Great new sound. The band really evolved, but they are still and beyond doubt Coheed and Cambria. Some fans will not recognize it and call this album boring because they might not get into the new sound.
Nearly every track is a hit. Especially the first half of the album (and "Pearl of Stars") is excellent or even beyond awesome. I hope really that "Guns of Summer" is a glimpse into the future of the guys. Nevertheless the album has some weak tracks and unfortunately these tracks a located near the end, where the albums of the Coheed and Cambria are usually very strong, even the somewhat disappointing "No World of tomorrow". This album just fades out.
I rate this album 4 stars and compare it with "Second Stage Turbine Blade". It is really great. It offers something new and it sounds amazing. But to compared to the previous albums it lacks a real finale and a structure that keeps the different parts together. Claudio and the guys have done an excellent job, but the past shows that they can do even better. I can barely imagine the "awesomeness" of an new and more epic "In keeping Secrets of Silent Earth" with the new sound.

3.0 good | emjayar08 | March 22nd 10 | I honestly do not get how people think this is near the top of coheed's best work. To be perfectly honest, this is a pretty good cd all by itself, but it is surely coheeds worst album to date. YotBR does not rock as hard as NWFT and none of the songs are anywhere as enjoyable as time consumer, welcome home or faint of hearts. YotBR is way too overproduced, guitars are totally underutilized and claudio's voice no long 'cuts like a blade.' but again, this is still a pretty good album.

4.0 excellent | EverythingEvil2113 | March 22nd 10 | Not what I was expecting at all but still amazing. This is a welcome change after the lackluster effort that was NWFT (at least by their standards). There's a great, almost industrial sounding vibe going on. The guitar tones are perfect and this album overall is more atmospheric than anything they've done. Claudio's voice is still top notch and there are still hooks galore. Overall this a great step forward for the band after some people were probably afraid that they fell in a rut after NWFT.

4.5 superb | DrBenEvl | March 19th 10 | This album is definitely one that grows on you. Also, I think the album as a whole is
greater than the sum of its parts (which is also true of their other albums). That being
said, I think YotBR has more songs that could be singles than their other records (I think
"World of Lines" and "When Skeletons Live" are big contenders for the next single, or "Guns
of Summer" if they wanna go the more adventurous route). The only thing I am really missing
from this album is a big epic like the title track of IKSSE3. Overall it was nice to hear
the band experiment with some new ideas and most of the time it payed off. I'm also a
fan of hearing Claudio's voice in its more natural state. I can't wait to hear what some of
these songs sound like live. I almost always listen to the live Neverender versions of the
albums. "Guns of Summer" has the potential to be absolutely ridiculous.

4.5 superb | grebllah | March 19th 10 | Coheed comes back to making their music exciting again. While i have been a fan of all of their albums, by the second Good Apollo they were starting to lose my interest, and with the inclusion of Chris Pennie they have made music which is catchy and epic AND rhythmically interesting again, something which they have lacked since IKSSE3. He didn't save the band, as they have released two amazing albums and two good albums, but he certainly is a very welcome addition to one of my favorite bands.

4.0 excellent | painthethane | March 16th 10 | Maybe it's the lack of production, or at least the sound of a lacking production. Maybe it's
the fact that Claudio sounds like Claudio singing. Maybe it's the dark, spacey feel. But to
sum it up, this album delivers on most levels.
BTW! Stop with the Pennie is god shit! He wrote drum parts and played them well. He
completed the rhythm section. I'm pretty sure Travis and Claudio deserve the brunt of the
credit here.

Honestly, I was not a huge fan of No World For Tomorrow, and had skeptical expectations for YOTB. My expectations were quickly exceeded after I heard "The Broken", when I knew this album was going to flat-out kick ass. I'll just end by saying that YOTB is a very consistent release that contains some of Coheed's most memorable work and yes, Chris Pennie makes the album. Going to listen to this again bai guys

4.5 superb | Tw1ster | March 15th 10 | Year of the Black Rainbow is the Coheed album I have been waiting for since I first heard IKS3. Ever sicne that album, they have been progressing into a heavier, solid band and with this album, they ditch any extremely "made for radio" pop songs found on previous albums. Instead they have crafted a cohesive, creepy, dark, brooding, and beautiful masterpiece that sounds like nothing else out there. I for one am happy they have made five different albums instead of five of the same. Kudos Coheed and Cambria, I can't wait to see some of these songs live

4.5 superb | Metamorphosis | December 17th 11 | Shut up, I don't care what you guys say. This is absolutely their greatest effort. The rhythm section on this thing can be absolutely insane or it can be very subdued. The album is epic, but needs not try too hard to be so. It's sonically large and every single song can be considered a near-flawless standout.
Bump |
2.0 poor | impregnator | November 28th 11 | The production on this album is absolutely abysmal, it makes the songs so robotic and lifeless that a single listen is nearly unbearable.
Bump |
3.0 good | darlingfemmefatal | March 21st 11 | This album has some good moments, but it's a step down from their last album. It seems to lack depth and moves into an almost post-rock kind of territory, where simplicity is replaced with bland, empty tracks and platitudes. I was hoping for greater progressive epics, but I was deeply dissatisfied.
Bump |
3.0 good | Staker | February 12th 11 | Good song writing - less pop sound, more "metal", so it's more meaty on average. However, the guitars feel like they were at the bottom of the mixing priority so so much great playing is drowned out by the vocals (which, whilst as good as ever, should make some space). The Black Rainbow is a step in a wild direction for them, and Far works on every level.

2.5 average | Irving EMERITUS | December 12th 10 | Well, if there's one thing that the band did do very well for this release it's got to be their choice of singles: buoyed by the amazing synth energy atop Here We Are Juggernaut and the phenomenal rock-riffing on World of Lines I splurged on the Limited Deluxe Edition version of this album, expecting more of the same...I was sorely disappointed. The album is extremely front-loaded (the final four or five songs are the worst that Coheed & Cambria have produced as a group), and there's barely a truly remarkable moment on this cohesive - but ultimately uninspired - record. It's by far and away the worst Coheed record around. Only get it to complete your collection, or if the idea of a couple of stylish prog rock songs stacked alongside acceptable filler appeals to you.
Bump |
1.0 awful | patrickfannon | July 2nd 10 | I'm sorry, Coheed, I love you guys, but this is seriously pure fucking garbage. I expected something epic, not moody and whiney. As fans, we deserve better. As a band, you should be ashamed. Might want to officially apologize and record a new album that does not suck this terribly. It's like Indiana Jones 4... but worse.

3.5 great | Yazz_Flute | March 15th 10 | YOTBR is a lot less guitar-oriented than Coheed's other albums. A lot of the songs even have an interesting quasi-
electronica beat going on. But its still got some motherfucking catchy songs and as a whole is stronger than No
World For Tomorrow. World of Lines is one of the catchiest songs they've released in a while, and Guns of Summer
has almost DEP-esque drumming. First impression and this is a 3.5-4. But it will probably grow on me.
